One of the reasons why RAN infrastructure is expensive is that no single RU can meet all of an MNO’s needs. With 5G supporting a broad array of services at multiple frequency bands with differing, often dynamic, performance needs, multiple RUs with different characteristics need to be deployed to ensure service coverage and optimise performance.
This paper looks at a solution which dramatically reduces the cost of 5G RAN deployment by reducing the number and variety of RUs required for service coverage. Offered as an open O-RU according to O-RAN specifications it could be the final piece of the puzzle that makes Open RAN the preferred deployment model for MNOs in the future.
