A US federal judge sided with AT&T by issuing a temporary restraining order against T-Mobile US to prohibit it from using a scraping tool to collect customers’ personal data to get them to switch.

The judge issued her finding yesterday (18 December) in a US federal court which stated T-Mobile’s Easy Switch programme “accessed AT&T’s protected computer systems without its authorisation”.

“T-Mobile’s unauthorised access allowed it to obtain over 100 fields of private customer data from AT&T’s servers for each affected customer and transmit that information back to T-Mobile’s servers in violation of the Computer Fraud and Abuse Act, the Texas Harmful Access by Computer Act, the Comprehensive Computer DataAccess and Fraud Act, and the Georgia Computer Systems Protection Act.”

The judge noted “AT&T has and will incur immediate, irreparable harm if a temporary restraining order is not issued”.

T-Mobile deployed a beta version of Easy Switch at the Formula 1 Heineken Las Vegas Grand Prix on 20 November.

Easy Switch is an AI tool which analyses current AT&T or Verizon accounts before recommending optimal T-Mobile plans.

AT&T sought a temporary restraining order to prevent T-Mobile from using the price comparison tool to access password-protected software without its permission. It implemented security measures to block the first version of Easy Access on 24 November.

After AT&T’s countermeasures, T-Mobile disabled the original Easy Switch on 26 November and replaced it with the current version.

On 5 December, T-Mobile’s counsel told AT&T it “does not intend to revert to the original version of Easy Switch”.

T-Mobile argues AT&T’s lawsuit is moot since it no longer uses the version of Easy Switch which scrapes customer data.

“The threat of harm remains despite T-Mobile’s deactivation of Easy Switch because, as T-Mobile represented on the record, it is T-Mobile’s intent to retain the ability to ‘use something very similar [to the Easy Switch tool] that does the same thing but might be tweaked a little bit differently in the future,’” the ruling stated.

The temporary restraining order will expire at the end of 28 days after it was issued unless AT&T and T-Mobile come to an agreement or by a court order.

T-Mobile US promoted Jon Freier (pictured) to COO in a move to fill the void left by Srini Gopalan, who took over as CEO on 1 November.

Freier previously served as the operator’s consumer group president since 2021, but he has a long history with T-Mobile.

He started his career in the telecommunications industry in 1994 with Western Wireless, which became T-Mobile in 2021, according to a recent SEC filing announcing his promotion.

Gopalan mentioned Freier’s new role during an investor conference yesterday (9 December) as part of a plan to align “the organisation behind the strategy”. He assumed the role on 5 December.

A representative for T-Mobile told Mobile World Live the restructuring also included naming Mike Katz as the company’s chief business and product officer, leading the company’s long-term strategy and planning. His prior role was president of marketing, strategy and product.

Gopalan took over as COO on 1 March after previously serving as a member of T-Mobile’s board of directors since 2022. He replaced Mike Sievert as CEO.

It’s worth noting Sievert served as COO prior to replacing former CEO John Legere in 2020 as part of a planned succession.

T-Mobile US hit out at a lawsuit filed by AT&T seeking a temporary restraining order to stop the former using its Easy Switch price comparison tool to gain new customers, arguing its rival’s case is not valid.

The operator filed its response in a federal court on 8 December. T-Mobile stated the challenge to Easy Switch is irrelevant because it removed a function scraping AT&T customer data four days before the rival initiated its legal action.

AT&T had argued the data was being accessed to encourage customers to switch providers.

T-Mobile stated since ending the scraping, “Easy Switch has only allowed AT&T customers to upload a copy of their wireless bill or manually enter their wireless plan information”.

“AT&T does not allege that this current version of Easy Switch is unlawful or harms it, let alone irreparably so.”

T-Mobile deployed a beta version of Easy Switch at the Formula 1 Heineken Las Vegas Grand Prix on 20 November.

Easy Switch is an AI tool which analyses current AT&T or Verizon accounts before recommending optimal T-Mobile plans. It went live on 1 December.

AT&T sought a temporary restraining order to prevent T-Mobile using a price comparison tool to access secure software without permission.

It implemented security measures to block the access on 24 November.

After AT&T’s countermeasures, T-Mobile disabled the original Easy Switch for its customers on 26 November and replaced it with the current version.

On 5 December, T-Mobile’s counsel told AT&T it “does not intend to revert to the original version of Easy Switch”.

Backed down
T-Mobile’s lawyers stated it dropped the original version because of “AT&T’s dogged efforts to technologically block its customers from taking advantage of the feature and thereby impede their ability to compare the companies’ offerings”.

“These facts resolve the motion.”

“The conduct AT&T challenges is not occurring and AT&T has not objected to the operation of Easy Switch in its current form.”

An AT&T representative told Mobile World Live it appreciates T-Mobile saying it “will stop recklessly scraping customer data for now”.

“We ask that they commit, on the record, to never employing these unlawful tactics that put customers and intellectual property rights at risk again.”

The lawsuit is scheduled to move to an in-person hearing on 16 December in a US district court in the state of Texas.

AT&T filed a lawsuit in a US federal court to stop T-Mobile US’ AI-based switching tool from scraping its customer data as part of a plan to gain new subscribers.

On 20 November, T-Mobile rolled out a beta version of its Easy Switch programme at Formula 1’s Las Vegas Grand Prix race. It enables customers from rivals AT&T and Verizon to change plans in 15 minutes instead of hours using its digital T-Life app.

Easy Switch is an AI tool which analyses current AT&T or Verizon accounts before recommending optimal T-Mobile plans. It went live on 1 December.

After sending T-Mobile an initial complaint on 26 November, AT&T filed its lawsuit in a US district in Texas on 30 November.

It alleges the T-Life app is scraping AT&T customer data by collecting “more than 100 categories of private information” from each subscriber before recommending lower-priced T-Mobile plans.

AT&T asked the judge to issue a temporary restraining order blocking T-Mobile from using its “Switch Made Easy” (SME) price-comparison tool to access password-protected software on AT&T’s systems without permission.

“AT&T has already told T-Mobile to stop,” it stated in the 30 November filing. “T-Mobile refused and instead actively circumvented security measures that AT&T put in place to block T-Mobile’s unauthorised intrusions.”

The operator also stated in its most recent filing T-Mobile’s “scraper also operates without identification so as to appear as AT&T’s own customers, in a blatant attempt to deceive AT&T’s systems,” which it claimed is without authorisation and in violation of its terms of use.

Before filing its lawsuit, AT&T sent a cease-and-desist letter to T-Mobile on 24 November, and on the same day implemented computer security measures to block T-Mobile’s scraping.

It also contacted Apple the same day about the T-Life app violating app store terms. T-Mobile stated four days later that it does not run counter to the iPhone-maker’s app store guidelines,

On 25 November, AT&T claimed T-Mobile altered its SME scraping tool to disguise it from detection. AT&T alleges T-Mobile again modified its tool to evade detection a day later.

After AT&T again blocked SME’s access on 26 November, T-Mobile removed its scraping function, but AT&T noted the tool still appears to be collecting Verizon customer data.

A representative from AT&T told Mobile World Live (MWL) it took action “to prevent T-Mobile from putting customers at risk through its irresponsible implementation of bots and AI to unlawfully harvest private customer data and competitors’ intellectual property”.

“ Our customers trust AT&T with their personal information, and we will continue to protect them from T-Mobile’s reckless business practices by giving them, not an unknown bot, control of their personal data.”

T-Mobile responds
A representative for T-Mobile told MWL “AT&T’s claims are wrong on the facts and the law”.

“Easy Switch simply and safely empowers consumers to seamlessly access and share their own information so that they can make an informed choice about their wireless provider and plan. We remain committed to transparency, simplicity and ensuring consumers have the freedom to choose, and we will continue to vigorously oppose AT&T’s efforts to hamper consumer choice.”

The judge granted T-Mobile’s request to file its opposition to AT&T’s lawsuit by 8 December followed by an in-person hearing 16 December.

Verizon did not respond to MWL’s request for comment on T-Mobile’s SME tool.

T-Mobile US fibre joint venture Metronet expanded its reach across 3 million additional locations, which it claimed marks a significant achievement among dedicated fibre providers.

The fibre network now serves over 300 communities across 19 states, with more launches planned. The milestone follows Metronet’s acquisition by a JV between T-Mobile and KKR in July.

Under the new ownership, Metronet now operates as a wholesale builder and operator of fibre-optic networks. It serves residential customers multi-gigabit network speeds through a wholesale model and supports T-Mobile US’ Fiber business customers.

To support growth, T-Mobile and Metronet are acquiring other companies, closing the purchase of Minneapolis-based fibre ISP US Internet in September, which marked Metronet’s seventh acquisition in seven years.

Former T-Mobile CEO Mike Sievert touted the JV as a “capital light” approach for growing its fixed wireless internet service through deals to buy Metronet and FTTH provider Lumos Networks, the latter of which is also a joint venture.

During the company’s Q3 earnings call in October, former COO Srini Gopalan did not rule out M&A for additional fibre deals or joint ventures before taking over as CEO on 1 November.

As of Q3, T-Mobile is targeting 12 million FWA customers by 2028 and 12 million to 15 million homes passed through the fibre JVs.

T-Mobile US CTO and president of technology John Saw (pictured) predicted Formula 1 racing would be disrupted by digital twin technology which would design full replicas of the cars and racetracks.

Speaking on a panel at the Formula 1 Las Vegas Grand Prix, Saw explained five years from now digital twins will help engineers work out the aerodynamics of their cars outside of wind tunnels.

Current wind tunnels cannot duplicate the conditions across all of the racing series’ 24 tracks.

“You could be out just by a whisker and you would lose like a full second, which is like disastrous,” he said. “The point I’m trying to make is that getting engineering aerodynamics right at 200 miles an hour is not easy.”

Saw noted the regulatory body of F1 periodically changes the design specifications teams must adhere to.

“It’s almost like a crapshoot despite millions of dollars spent on that,” he said. “And now there’s a new spec coming up in a few months. Imagine if you’re able to create an AI digital twin of the car.”

Good intentions
Combining digital twins of the cars and tracks with AI intent-based networking will allow the teams to run through millions of simulations of every possible condition.

Operators including T-Mobile are ushering in the age of intent-based networking where AI agents are in every element working together to meet the needs of every customer.

“If you translate that to F1 racing, it means that we may have AI agents that are in charge of every aspect of the car,” he said.

“And suddenly you’re going to have an AI-assisted design car and you can actually drive that at home too.”

In addition to aerodynamics, digital twins combined with AI will measure drag, performance and tyre wear.

Saw said more data would be collected during practice runs by some of the top drivers in the world.

“You put in weather conditions and temperature for the weekend,” he said “Suddenly you’re going to have AI recommendations for race strategy, tyre wear strategy and fuel management.”

“Suddenly the race engineer now has an AI core.”

Digital twins could also be used to train drivers in the future.

“Don’t tell Lando [Norris] I said that, but future F1 drivers could be trained on digital twins, not on go-cart racing tracks when they were 11,” Saw said.

T-Mobile US brought to bear its 5G portfolio for the Formula 1 Las Vegas Grand Prix race, combining public-network enhancements and network slicing to solve operational obstacles.

In its third year of providing connectivity at the race, Scott Jacka, senior director on T-Mobile’s network Innovation team, stated it dialled in the types of connectivity needed for the 3.8 mile-long race which snakes through the Las Vegas Strip and includes 17 corners.

He noted the operator has seven different network slices for the race and each “gets tuned for the use case that’s on top of it”.

“The settings that we have in use for broadcast are different than the settings we might have at the point-of-sale, or different than the settings that might be there for team priorities,” he explained.

He stated the operator does some tuning on the broadcast slice to generate a more consistent video experience, but it does not necessarily do it across the board on all slices.

AvidThink founder and analyst Roy Chua noted the network slices support everything from drone videography and rooftop broadcast cameras, to sports photography and point-of-sale systems, alongside private wireless with flexible edge breakout, which allows F1 production teams to process high-bandwidth video and telemetry locally.

“T-Mobile is bringing its comprehensive 5G and 5G-Advanced network services portfolio to the Las Vegas Grand Prix, combining public-network enhancements, private wireless and advanced slicing to solve operational challenges at one of the most demanding live events in the world,” Chua said.

The operator is offering its T-Priority service for the first time to keep safety teams and first responders including the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department connected.

Power band
“In terms of extra spectrum, C-Band is something we brought in here for a limited basis that’s not necessarily broadly deployed in our public network,” Jacka said. “But our 5G on demand produces C-Band that gives us access to clean channels for a private network.”

Chua noted T-Mobile also layered in temporary cells on wheels (COWs) to reinforce coverage in lower-density track segments, and is using mmWave and C-Band spectrum for high-capacity performance in the grandstands and along the course.

Jacka said T-Mobile has permanent infrastructure along the Strip straight section of the track, but uses the COWs to reinforce coverage in lower-density track segments.

Chua noted T-Mobile is using its SuperMobile network slicing platform to give business users prioritised, secure service tiers.

“After several years of supporting the race, the carrier appears to have refined a playbook for capacity planning and rapid deployment, ensuring both fans and event operators benefit from a resilient, production-grade 5G network enhanced with new services like edge breakout and selective use of network slicing,” Chua said.

T-Mobile US threw its weight behind its all-in-one T-Life digital app to enable phone plan deals and other benefits for customers while driving its digital transformation.

Consumer group president Jon Freier (pictured) told Mobile World Live the app launched in 2024 to unify its services before it retired a legacy app at the end of the year.

“Then we connected T-Life into our retail point of sale systems and into our customer care systems earlier this year.”

“It’s a huge part of the digital transformation.”

Freier stated 75 per cent of sales of the latest family of iPhones in September happened through T-Life and more than 66 per cent of the company’s phone upgrades are enabled on it.

“We have more transparency and more reliability in the transaction.”

“We’re helping people understand exactly what happened with that transaction and how their next bill is going to change.”

The app is also in use across T-Mobile’s retail stores and customer care centres.

“What we plan to do over time is we’re going to stop using legacy systems in our stores and unify everything behind T-Life so that 100 per cent of our transactions are going through the app,” Freier said. “Then we would retire our legacy systems”.

He stated T-Mobile expects to reach the goal by late 2026.

Provider swaps
T-Mobile executives stated customers would be able to switch carriers in 15 minutes on the T-Life app using Easy Switch, an AI tool which recommends plans.

Freier said Easy Switch has some elements of the IntentCX platform the operator developed with OpenAI to improve customer experience by proactively solving problems.

IntentCX gathers information from millions of T-Mobile subscribers.

“We have IntentCX that’s already built into the T-Life app and a lot of that’s for our existing customers for them to be able to self-serve within the app,” he said. “We are borrowing some pieces of that to drive Easy Switch.”

T-Mobile US pulled out all the stops during a presentation at the Formula 1 Heineken Las Vegas Grand Prix about a major upgrade to its wireless switching process which allows customers to change plans in 15 minutes using its digital T-Life app.

“Switching in this industry is broken by design,” CEO Srini Gopalan (pictured) said. “Switching means it’s the start of a new relationship. It’s supposed to be the honeymoon phase.”

“It actually feels much more like going through a divorce than going through the honeymoon phase of a relationship because you’ve got to do all kinds of gymnastics.”

While customers can conduct all manner of digital transactions on their phones, Gopalan stated it typically takes three hours to switch plans.

Easy Switch
The operator stated customers will be able to switch carriers in 15 minutes on the T-Life app using Easy Switch, an AI tool which analyses current AT&T or Verizon accounts before recommending optimal T-Mobile plans.

Jon Freier, president of the T-Mobile consumer group, told Mobile World Live. Easy Switch is due to go live on 1 December.

Mike Katz, president of strategy, products and marketing, explained the beta version of Easy Switch provides an AI-driven guide to scan customers plans.

“It knows what plan you’re on and how much you’re paying. What services you have and then gives you custom recommendations that compare your service to choices at T-Mobile.”

“You can see exactly how much you’ll save and all of the unbelievable exclusive features that you’ll unlock that don’t exist in your current carrier.”

Freier said future enhancements for Easy Switch include the ability to examine multi-line accounts to help customers make better direct comparisons to rival plans.

He said T-Mobile aims to launch the feature in early 2026.

“We want to make sure that we can grab any kind of discount that you might be receiving from AT&T and Verizon and incorporate that into the personalised pricing and products that we’re potentially going to be offering you,” he explained.

Freier said Easy Switch would continue to improve over time because it employs AI.

Delivering
Customers can also switch now and choose a new smartphone within 90 days, removing the pressure to upgrade immediately.

“You shouldn’t lose your promotion just because you don’t want to make a decision today,” Katz said.

From the start of December, customers can also bring their current phones to T-Mobile when they make the switch.

Along with same day pickup in stores, T-Mobile also expanded a partnership with delivery company DoorDash to convey phones to customers the day they are ordered when using the T-Life app. The option will be offered from the start of next month in a limited area before being expanded.

T-Mobile is also offering customers another chance to secure a DoorDash delivery subscription with a yearly value of $120.

Gopalan announced T-Mobile would sponsor Formula 1 for three more years and support events at the Circuit of the Americas in Austin, Texas for the first time beginning in 2026.

“All of that together is our next step at changing this industry for the better.”

T-Mobile US plans to pull out all its 5G network bells and whistles at next week’s Formula 1 Las Vegas Grand Prix, including network slicing for emergency services, and all point of sale and ticketing transactions.

As a partner of the Las Vegas Grand Prix Formula 1 (LVGP) race the operator is providing 5G network slicing to first responders, such as the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department (LVMPD), through its T-Priority service to support critical operations.

Using its standalone (SA) 5G network, T-Mobile stated T-Priority allocates up to five times more network resources even in the most congested areas to enable essential voice and data communications.

It is also providing LVMPD with a 5G-connected drone which will give first responders a real-time aerial overview and HD video streaming to identify and respond to incidents across the race circuit.

The operator is also providing race staff with 5G networking through its SuperMobile platform to help keep racing teams connected and for use by photographers to speedily upload images.

For the first time, T-Mobile’s 5G network will power a 360-degree camera and live drone feeds, offering fans immersive broadcast views from both the track and the sky above the Las Vegas Strip.

The race events are scheduled to start 20 November and conclude two days later.

LIVE FROM MWL UNWRAPPED: THE 5G EVOLUTION: Ankur Kapoor, SVP and Chief Network Officer for T-Mobile US, outlined how the operator has charted a course toward 6G for a future defined by AI-native, intent-driven networks.

Speaking to Mobile World Live on the second day of Unwrapped, Kapoor stated the operator’s early leadership across standalone (SA) 5G and 5G-Advanced are key for 6G.

Kapoor explained T-Mobile got the early SA 5G jump on rivals AT&T and Verizon by rolling it out in 2020, which led to a nationwide launch of 5G-Advanced earlier this year.

5G-Advanced enables network slicing for first responders and for businesses through a new plan called SuperMobile. T-Mobile also introduced six-carrier aggregation (6CA) on its SA 5G network earlier this year.

In July, the operator unveiled a large-scale deployment of low latency, low loss and scalable (L4S) technology across its network, which Kapoor said is ideal for gamers.

Lastly, he highlighted 5G-Advanced enabling 5G reduced capability (RedCap) features on the latest Apple smartwatches.

“We’re one of the only two carriers globally that actually have a 5G-Advanced rollout nationwide,” he explained. “And a big part of that was kind of what we did four or five years ago when we started rolling out 5G.”

6G
Kapoor explained 5G-Advanced sets the stage for AI-native and intent-driven networks, which are key elements of 6G.

T-Mobile is collaborating with Nokia and Nvidia to embed AI and machine learning into a network fabric, to enable autonomous optimisation, predictive maintenance and seamless adaptation to user needs.

“If 5G-Advanced is the foundation of this, 6G is the horizon,” he said. “[We’re] very confident we will be leaders in 6G and extremely optimistic that we’ll be the first ones to roll out 6G in the United States as well.”

Kapoor pointed to the formation of the operator’s AI-RAN Innovation Centre last year with partners Ericsson, Nokia and Nvidia as the starting point for intent-driven networks.

“The progress has been fantastic,” he said. “This is a technology that I think we will innovate in the United States and the rest of the world will follow.”

While it is not yet 6G, Kapoor said T-Mobile is in early trials for intent-based networking, including real-time optimisation of the network during weather-related emergencies.

“That’s where we are optimising our network on a minute-by-minute basis through our self-organising networks,” he said. “That’s a start of this intent-based network journey.”

He continued: “If you think of the networks, they’re a little bit of a dumb pipe. We’re going to take them into the 6G era from a dump pipe that just carried bits and bytes to an era where actually it’s token-based and it’s intent-based.”

Kapoor stated he is optimistic T-Mobile will utilise AI-RAN functionalities on its network starting with possible field trials next year, but he noted the vendor ecosystem needs further development.

T-Mobile US launched an offer enabling anyone with a compatible smartphone to send messages to emergency services over its satellite set-up, to provide coverage in remote areas lacking traditional mobile connectivity.

The T-Mobile Text to 911 service also works for AT&T and Verizon’s customers who have a second eSIM on an unlocked device.

Text to 911 uses T-Mobile’s T-Satellite offering, which launched in July and uses Starlink’s network of 650 satellites.

T-Satellite is available for free to subscribers of T-Mobile’s Experience Beyond or Go5G Next plans. For those without premium plans, or customers of AT&T and Verizon, it is being offered for $10 per month.

In a move to perhaps win over phone subscribers from its rivals, customers with compatible devices can now enrol for free access to Text to 911.

The phones automatically connect to satellites when terrestrial signals are unavailable without requiring users to be in an open space or point their devices in a certain direction.

T-Mobile customers can add the service online or using the T-Life app and users of rival networks can sign up through a dedicated link.

Owners of iPhone 14 and later models, and certain Pixel devices can connect to emergency services provided by Apple and Google. In those instances, T-Satellite defers to device-native emergency satellite messaging services.

T-Mobile US provisioned network slicing for technology company Siemens Energy through its SuperMobile platform which runs on its 5G-Advanced (5G-A) network.

The arrangement covers Siemens Energy’s 3,000 US employees, including 1,000 field technicians who maintain and modernise equipment responsible for nearly 25 per cent of the nation’s energy generation.

Siemen Energy’s footprint spans 25 facilities, 14 service centres and 30 remote locations, often in challenging environments where real-time communication is critical.

T-Mobile launched its 5G-A network nationwide in April, which it uses to deliver slicing to businesses and emergency services.

Its SuperMobile service uses the 5G-A network for slicing and optimising critical communications for Siemens Energy.

SuperMobile enables real-time collaboration, rapid data transfers and live video diagnostics between Siemens Energy’s field crews and engineering teams, even during peak network demand.

Siemens Energy technicians often work in remote and challenging environments where reliable service has historically been unavailable.

SuperMobile also includes built-in security and satellite connectivity through a partnership with Starlink.

T-Mobile Business Group CMO Mo Katibeh said adoption of SuperMobile has been rapid and spans industries including media and transportation.

Nvidia lined up a $1 billion investment in Nokia as the pair teamed on AI-native infrastructure moves incorporating the US chip company’s related technology with the vendor’s RAN portfolio for 5G-Advanced (5G-A) and future 6G infrastructure.

The investment is to be made through the issuance of fresh Nokia shares and will result in Nvidia holding a 2.9 per cent stake in the vendor once customary closing conditions are met.

Nokia stated it intends to use the proceeds to speed development of its 5G and 6G RAN software for Nvidia architecture, along with their broader AI infrastructure arrangement.

The AI-native infrastructure collaboration could also be extended to cover Nokia’s data centre switching and optical technologies.

Nokia and Nvidia separately stated the AI-RAN work would act as a foundation for distributed edge inferencing along with fresh services for consumers and enterprises.

Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang believes the developments will contribute to US efforts to “regain global leadership” in telecoms infrastructure by making it a frontrunner in AI-RAN.

The companies are working with T-Mobile US and Dell Technologies on developments involving the infrastructure.

Huang said Nvidia and Nokia are “igniting” an AI-RAN revolution, “equipping operators to build intelligent, adaptive networks that will define the next generation of global connectivity”.

Nokia CEO Justin Hotard said the tie-up is necessary because the “next leap in telecom isn’t just from 5G to 6G: it’s a fundamental redesign of the network” involving AI connectivity which can process “intelligence from the data centre all the way to the edge”.

Nvidia and Nokia predict AI-RAN will provide a bump in mobile network performance and efficiency required by current and future iterations of the technology.

They stated almost half of the 800 million weekly active users of ChatGPT access it on mobile devices.

Nvidia aims to ease the transition from 5G-A to 6G through Aerial RAN Computer Pro (ARC-Pro), an accelerated computing platform enabling operators to switch using software updates. It is making a reference design available to encourage broad backing by other manufacturers and network equipment vendors.

Nokia plans to include ARC-Pro in a new AI-RAN product it stated would ease the transition from traditional radio infrastructure.

Partners
The Finnish vendor’s ambition is in part being advanced by Dell Technologies’ PowerEdge servers, which provide no-touch software upgrades and only minimal intervention on the silicon side.

T-Mobile’s involvement builds on an existing collaboration with Nvidia on AI-native infrastructure. The operator plans to test the technologies developed by the chip company and Nokia, with a target of commencing field trials covering performance and efficiency gains in 2026.

John Saw, president of technology and CTO at T-Mobile, said Nokia’s involvement with the pair is “an important step towards shaping the future of connectivity”, in particular preparations for 6G.

T-Mobile US CEO Mike Seivert has been on all 50 earnings calls for the operator, but Q3 was his last as current COO Srini Gopalan (pictured) takes over the wheel on 1 November.

“I’ve been here for every single one to offer my perspective and to help shape our narrative about the future,” Sievert said on the Q3 conference call. “I have had a blast. Leading this company over the past 13 years has been the honour of a lifetime.”

Sievert acknowledged that Gopalan had a more prominent role on the Q3 (for the period ending 30 September) call.

Sievert received numerous congratulations from his team and analysts, and the call ended with the former toasting his reign with champagne. Sievert stated he looked forward to supporting the team in his new role as vice chairman.

“I promise we don’t plan to spend the day running your company day drinking,” Sievert said as he and the executive team quaffed champagne.

Sievert also welcomed Andre Almeida to the executive team in his role as president of growth and emerging businesses after previously serving on its board of directors for over two years.

“Andre is a deep industry expert and a longtime colleague of Srini’s, Sievert said. “And he has also been a strategic advisor to me on many topics for many years.”

Q3 numbers
Dating back to Sievert’s predecessor, John Legere, T-Mobile has never been shy about boasting about its quarterly results as the so called uncarrier.

While T-Mobile is a long way from being the fourth operator in the US after its merger with Sprint, Sievert and his team had plenty to brag about, including the addition of more than 1 million post-paid phone subscribers. Analysts forecast it would add 841,700 net post-paid phone connections.

Those additions marked the operator’s best Q3 in over a decade and easily topped rival AT&T’s 405,000 postpaid additions. Verizon reports its Q3 results 29 October.

T-Mobile completed its deal to buy wireless assets and customers from UScellular on 1 August, but did not disclose the effect of the acquisition on its customer-addition numbers for the quarter.

CFO Peter Osvaldik stated the company increased its guidance for post-paid phone additions for the year to 3.3 million, “highlighting the tremendous momentum we’re seeing in the business”. T-Mobile guided post-paid phone additions of 2.9 million to 3.1 million in Q2.

The operator added 506,000 customers for its fixed wireless access (FWA) broadband service, along with 54,000 fibre broadband customers through its T-Fiber offering.

T-Mobile is targeting 12 million FWA customers by 2028 and 12 million to 15 million homes passed with fibre through joint ventures with Lumos Networks and Metronet.

Gopalan did not rule out M&A for additional fibre deals or joint ventures, the latter of which allows it to take a capital light approach.

“On the strength of our T-Fiber rollout, we are also raising our fibre customer net additions guidance to be approximately 130,000 this year, up from approximately 100,000 previously,” Osvaldik said.

Total service revenue increased by 9 per cent year-over-year to $18.2 billion while post-paid service revenues jumped 12 per cent to $14.9 billion.

Net income of $2.7 billion was down compared to $3 billion. Revenue was up 8.9 per cent to $22 billion.

“This quarter was a showcase of Srini’s and this entire team’s ability to rally the organisation to deliver exceptional results while at the same time, building on the durable advantages that make it all possible,” Sievert said. “T-Mobile has never been stronger. Our growth runway is broad-based. Our differentiation is widening.”

The post Feature: US operators facing 5G vehicle challenges appeared first on Mobile World Live.

]]>
An AT&T 5G connectivity deal with Toyota Motor North America turned the spotlight on the US connected vehicle sector at a time when it faces regulatory, geo-political and old-fashioned radio challenges.

The US operator wasted little time in finding use cases for its 5G infrastructure after completing a nationwide deployment. Its deal with Toyota focuses firmly on the vehicle company’s own range of connected services, spanning infotainment, safety functions, servicing, and cloud, remote access and Wi-Fi connections.

AT&T promises “enhanced integrated audio streaming, a reliable Wi-Fi hotspot”, real-time navigation, remote services and OTA updates, along with access to SiriusXM content.

While it is undoubtedly a useful win for AT&T just after its 5G coverage achievement, the focus on connectivity alone masks some of the problems facing all US operators and automotive players.

These issues matter, given Verizon and T-Mobile US are each just as active in the automotive space as AT&T.

Verizon, for example, unveiled its latest cellular vehicle-to-everything (V2X) connected driving platform in June, with T-Mobile actively promoting its 5G network as providing a fast lane to a next-level of vehicle connectivity.

The Edge Transportation Exchange Verizon launched was demonstrated in conjunction with the 5G Automotive Association (5GAA) and counted Volkswagen Group of America and various transport authorities among initial users.

At the time, Verizon Business VP of Strategic Connectivity and IoT Shamik Basu said the exchange uses the growing range of software featured in vehicles to help manufacturers and relevant authorities plot how mobile technologies can be used in future transport situations.

Verizon’s approach employs LTE along with 5G, mobile edge compute and geolocation technology. The operator heralded various other benefits including cost reductions stemming from a decline in the number of roadside radio units required.

T-Mobile is targeting its 5G capabilities at a broad cross-section of the automotive opportunity, with a heavy tilt towards the potential in emergency service scenarios along with those relating to the vehicles themselves, customers and factories.

In an article on how 5G could drive the next wave of vehicle connectivity, T-Mobile explained the mobile technology stands to benefit safety, performance, efficiency, convenience and entertainment.

T-Mobile noted 5G may help overcome obsolescence in systems fitted to vehicles when they are made, improve data analysis and employ network slicing capabilities for a host of dedicated functions.

If all three major US operators already have the wheels in motion for vehicle connectivity and platforms, why does the situation in the market remain uncertain?

Driving instructions
Ironically, efforts to free up more spectrum for operators is one key issue.

The Alliance for Automotive Innovation (Auto Innovators) is a body which represents all elements of the US industry including manufacturers, equipment suppliers, battery producers, semiconductor and technology companies, and autonomous vehicle developers.

In a blog published earlier this year, Auto Innovators president and CEO John Bozzella noted spectrum sale plans included in President Donald Trump’s One Big Beautiful Bill could jeopardise wireless safety technology embedded in “millions of vehicles”.

Bozzella explained vehicle manufacturers are “investing heavily in wireless connectivity and use ultra-wideband” (UWB) spectrum in the 6GHz to 8.5GHz band for a host of features.

Auto Innovators argue this is a prime location in the wireless world, one which politicians and other industries “want turned over to other technologies”.

There is a broader push around releasing the upper 6GHz band to the mobile industry due to its potential to bolster current 5G networks and lay a foundation for future 6G technology.

But vehicle makers employ UWB in collision avoidance radar, remote parking, real-time positioning and digital keys enabling phones to be used to access vehicles.

The automotive industry has longer lead times than the mobile sector, so any change is going to involve patience and potentially a period of co-existence while current equipment serves out its time.

Bozzella was optimistic on a plan to exclude frequencies between 7.25GHz to 8.4GHz from auction plans and called on politicians to ensure this stretch, at least, is protected.

Auto Innovators is also collaborating with the CTIA to develop policies each industry believes would be workable.

In a report on the importance of 5G to the automotive sector issued in 2024, the CTIA pressed politicians to “continue to provide access to full-power licensed spectrum for the deployment of wide-area networks”.

It stated vehicle manufacturers are “first movers” in terms of employing 5G as they seek to hike the capacity and rate of data transmissions for navigation and infotainment systems, along with ultra-low latency which “eliminates lag and delays when split seconds matter”.

The latest mobile technology “will help a vehicle automatically share crash information” with emergency services, or help drivers “respond to real-time routing and weather information”.

It emphasised 5G would be a key element in traffic management systems, providing “valuable information about a vehicle’s surroundings” and noted a broad push to use the technology to make “roads, vehicles and communities safer”.

The CTIA listed a host of examples of how AT&T, T-Mobile and Verizon are working with the automotive industry on vehicle developments, highlighting how entwined the sectors now are.

Chipping in
Auto Innovators separately noted geo-political challenges remain a factor in the US vehicle market.

In August, SVP of policy Hilary Cain highlighted the semiconductor supply chain is still an area of concern.

Cain explained in a blog an average car today contains more than 1,700 chips and highlighted problems in the supply chain experienced during the Covid-19 (coronavirus) pandemic to show the seriousness of any disruption.

The executive argued the automotive chip supply chain “remains fragile”, putting developments including advanced driver assistance systems at risk, along with other critical in-vehicle systems.

Cain noted the US automotive industry remains heavily reliant on non-domestic production of vehicle-grade semiconductors, though wrote home-grown alternatives are beginning to gain some traction.

Bumpy road
Another factor which could come into play in operators’ connected vehicle goals is regulation.

In a response to a call by the US Department of Justice for information on state-level laws which could impact the overall national economy, Auto Innovators argued the case for a single set of rules.

It noted various US states have implemented or plan to enact legislation which could force manufacturers to adapt their vehicles to individual rules but argued such approaches are impractical, not least because people often drive into other regions.

Auto Innovators gained support from politicians for a proposal to make nationwide rules enabling location tracking to be disabled to help protect victims of domestic violence, a move likely easier for operators to implement instead of one involving individual states.

There is also what Auto Innovators described as a “patchwork” of frameworks for autonomous vehicles, something it warned could “harm the global competitiveness” of the US industry.

The group pointed to requirements to fit specific data recording capabilities and two-way communication functionalities as among the challenges, calling for the Department of Transportation to update national standards to include autonomous vehicles.

Despite the challenges, growth predictions for the overall connected car industry indicate it is worth US operators staying the course.

In 2024, speciality research company Towards Automotive noted 5G technology was already “at the forefront of the connected car revolution” and predicted global revenue for the sector would hit $167.5 billion by 2034, compared with an expected $49.5 billion this year.

It forecast the US alone would generate a CAGR of 12.7 per cent over the forecast period, as safety initiatives fuel demand for vehicle-to-vehicle connectivity and more IoT technologies are brought in.

T-Mobile US took the wraps off of Edge Control and T-Platform for businesses which are in its advanced network solutions (ANS) portfolio and provisioned by the operator’s 5G-Advanced network.

The mobile operator’s Edge Control service routes data directly between endpoints, servers and compute resources.

Mo Katibeh, CMO for T-Mobile Business Group, told Mobile World Live Edge Control is an industry-first offering which combines its 5G-Advanced network with local breakouts to deliver private network-like performance without the complexity and cost of deployment at every location.

By staying within its 5G-Advanced network, Edge Control reduces the number of data hops by optimising routing between remote users and endpoints while ensuring fast, secure and compliant delivery.

Mobile edge compute (MEC) brings cloud compute resources and data processing closer to users and devices rather than relying on centralised data centres.

“Edge Control, on the other hand, is a network enabler for mobile edge compute,” Katibeh explained “It allows cellular data traffic to be locally broken out at a hospital or a manufacturing plant or a military base and flows directly into that enterprise’s MEC environment,” he explained.

While Verizon has long been a proponent of MEC through a partnership with Amazon Web Services, Katibeh said Edge Connect works with all hysperscalers and is hardware agnostic.

“The heart of this is delivering agnostic traffic and steering capabilities that deliver ultra-low latency, data sovereignty, and scalability, working with all hyperscaler and local edge deployment flavours,” he said.

Katibeh stated latency is in the 10 milliseconds to 20 milliseconds range, providing similar performance as traditional private networks “without the cost and the complexity of managing private infrastructure at every single site”.

He said the Edge Control local breakout capabilities have been in development “for a handful of quarters”.

Verticals using Edge Control include healthcare, manufacturing, remote employees, military defence or any other industry which needs to keep traffic secure and on premise.

“There’s significant value even for mid-sized health organisations, especially ones that need to protect their customers’ and patients’ information, and who may have remote users going out to check on patients that may not be able to come into the facility,” he stated. “They still want that local breakout capability.

“They still want to not traverse the public internet or utilise VPNs for their users that are out seeing patients.”

T-Platform
The operator’s internally developed T-Platform is a unified management portal for all T-Mobile for Business services and technologies, including Edge Control.

It centralises network management, monitoring and control from a single pane of glass, making it easier for businesses to oversee their entire connected ecosystem.

“We’ve already onboarded tens of thousands of our existing customers into T-Platform and have been getting really strong feedback,” Katibeh said. “This was the right moment to make it commercially available because it fits so well with Edge Control as another flavour of our product portfolio.”

Both Edge Control and T-Platform are available today (20 October) across the operator’s entire footprint.

T-Mobile for Business
While T-Mobile has been playing catch up with rivals Verizon and AT&T in the business sector, its 5G and nationwide 5G-Advanced networks are starting to pay dividends.

Earlier this year, the operator announced T-Priority for first responders and network slicing for businesses through its SuperMobile plan, and now Edge Control and T-Platform. All those services take advantage of its standalone 5G network first launched in 2020.

“We’re moving more and more customers over to the best mobile network because of these sorts of solutions that deliver and address customer pain points,” Katibeh stated.

T-Mobile’s satellite service provisioned by Starlink birds made its nationwide debut in July after six months of beta testing.

The service is available free for subscribers of T-Mobile’s Experience Beyond or Go5G Next plans.

For those without premium plans, it is being offered for $10 per month for a limited time before increasing to $15 per month. Customers from rivals AT&T and Verizon can access connectivity for $10 a month when they add a second eSIM from T-Mobile.

Users of FirstNet and Verizon accounted for 3 per cent and 2.2 per cent, respectively, of usage during the same timeframe.

Verizon launched its free satellite messaging service with Skylo Technologies earlier this year, but it only works with newer devices such as the Samsung Galaxy S25 and Google Pixel 9.

AT&T and Verizon also have D2D deals in place with AST SpaceMobile with the latter targeting a launch in 2026. Ookla stated AST SpaceMobile plans to offer intermittent satellite connections to AT&T customers later this year, but it has faced several delays.

Usage map
Ookla’s Speedtest data found national forests and national parks are among the areas with the highest usage of the T-Satellite service, but Los Angeles County is the most popular location.

“Although the city of Los Angeles sits in the southern portion of Los Angeles County, California, the Angeles National Forest sits in the northern part,” stated Ookla.

It noted the remote area is home to several wilderness zones, including the Cucamonga Wilderness, Magic Mountain Wilderness and Pleasant View Ridge Wilderness, as well as a portion of the Pacific Crest Trail.

Second-ranked Larimer County, Colorado is in the northern part of the state and contains parts of Rocky Mountain National Park and Roosevelt National Forest while third-ranked Teton County, Wyoming, is the home of Grand Teton National Park and a big chunk of Yellowstone National Park.

Fourth-ranked Mohave County, Arizona, includes parts of Grand Canyon National Park, Lake Mead National Recreation Area and the Mojave Desert, all of which are areas that have at least some cellular dead zones.

T-Mobile US expanded its satellite-to-cell network to support a wider range of popular mobile apps, including WhatsApp and X, as it looks to extend connectivity to mobile dead zones and remote areas.

T-Satellite launched commercially in July with text messaging, short audio and picture messages and emergency text-to-911. With the upgrade, the service is now compatible with around a dozen mobile applications including WhatsApp, Apple Music, AccuWeather, Google Maps, X and T-Mobile’s own T-Life app. The expanded service is built to provide essential data services when traditional mobile networks are out of reach, with connectivity powered by more than 650 of SpaceX’s Starlink direct-to-cell satellites.

The operator is also extending T-Satellite into enterprise services, unlocking new business use cases and targeting industries that require persistent off-grid communication. It will support business apps such as Florian, designed for private sector industries such as hospitality and logistics, and MultiLine, which supports government, healthcare and other regulated sectors.

The enhanced service is available on most satellite-capable devices running Android 16 or iOS 26, with more platforms to follow. According to T-Mobile, as with messages and emergency notifications, the phone will automatically shift to satellite connectivity when cellular signal drops, enabling customers to use a satellite-ready app.

Jeff Giard, VP of strategic partnerships and product innovation at T-Mobile, told Reuters the operator worked closely with Apple and Google to enable any app to adopt satellite connectivity.

“The response from the first two months of T-Satellite commercial service has blown us away,” noted Mike Katz, president of marketing, innovation and experience at T-Mobile, adding that even basic satellite connectivity capabilities “have proven to be invaluable for wireless users”.

Access to T-Satellite is included for customers subscribed to T-Mobile’s SuperMobile and T-Priority plans, while those on other networks including AT&T and Verizon can subscribe for $10 per month.

Mike Sievert will definitely leave his role as CEO of T-Mobile US earlier than planned: the operator today (22 September) confirmed his successor would be current COO Srinivasan Gopalan (pictured) and the switch is set to happen on 1 November.

There were reports such a shift was in the offing earlier this year. T-Mobile said Sievert is to take on a new position as vice chair and so maintain involvement in the management of the company along with a board position.

For Gopalan, the decision caps something of a meteoric rise in 2025 after being appointed COO on 1 March.

Sievert said the same skills and abilities which gave him confidence when appointing Gopalan COO lay behind the succession decision. “One fact has become crystal clear: Srini is ready to lead.”

The outgoing CEO said Gopalan already proved his worth in terms of contributing to T-Mobile’s “record growth this year”.

T-Mobile itself highlighted “multiple acquisitions” which broadened availability of its 5G and fibre services. It noted Gopalan brings a wealth of technology expertise and a “customer-centric vision for driving growth through innovation and technology transformation”, most recently as CEO of parent Deutsche Telekom’s domestic unit.

Gopalan acknowledged the challenge he faces in following in the footsteps of Sievert, who he said had done a “phenomenal job” in transforming the operator.

T-Mobile US CEO Mike Sievert talks on an earnings call

Shake-up
Sievert (pictured, left) was due to remain in his role until 2028 under terms of a deal signed in 2023.

Gopalan has his work cut out for him in terms of maintaining T-Mobile’s run in 2025, but said it is well positioned after five years of building its network, and adding digital and AI capabilities.

Deutsche Telekom CEO and chair Timotheus Hoettges said Sievert led boldly and made its US business “the envy” of the industry.

He backed Gopalan to maintain the run, based on first-hand experience “of working directly” with the incoming chief.

Sievert’s move up the ladder is the latest change in what is shaping up as a shake-up of some big names in T-Mobile’s management team, with president of Technology Ulf Ewaldsson and president of its Business Group Callie Field also set to depart.

T-Mobile US updated its financial guidance following the completion of a $4.4 billion deal to buy UScellular, including a service revenue increase of $400 million for the current quarter.

In addition, the mobile operator stated it expects synergies from the integration to save around $1.2 billion in costs annually, up from an original estimate of $1 billion.

T-Mobile anticipates the integration will be completed in two years compared to its initial assessment of three to four years.

It will take a non-cash charge of about $350 million in Q3 (ending 30 September) as part of its shift to a more streamlined billing technology stack and “personnel costs primarily associated with technology modernisation”.

T-Mobile also anticipates around $100 million in integration costs, excluded from core adjusted EBITDA, and approximately $175 million in depreciation and amortisation expenses.

Despite acquiring a higher-churn UScellular base, T-Mobile expects its stronger core post-paid net additions to offset that, keeping overall post-paid customer guidance unchanged for the year.

T-Mobile completed its acquisition of UScellular’s mobile customers, stores and 30 per cent of its spectrum on 1 August.

CEO Mike Sievert stated on the company’s Q2 earnings call adding UScellular’s spectrum will give it a 50 per cent boost in capacity and a larger presence in rural markets.

The decision by EchoStar to sell some of its spectrum holdings to AT&T last week opened the floodgates for further sales but expect machinations between Elon Musk-owned SpaceX and additional US operators.

Indeed, Semafor reported last week (26 August) T-Mobile previously expressed interest in all of EchoStar’s spectrum before AT&T struck its $23 billion deal for rights to the satellite player’s 3.45GHz and 600MHz licences. It is reportedly still interested in some of the remaining assets.

The news agency reported T-Mobile, AT&T and EchoStar were in preliminary talks which would have allowed the operators to split the satellite player’s spectrum holdings.

SpaceX covets EchoStar’s AWS-4 spectrum for use on its low Earth orbit (LEO) satellites as part of a goal of providing its own coverage to mobile devices outside of partnerships with operators such as T-Mobile.

EchoStar co-founder and chair Charlie Ergen is a well-known hoarder of spectrum, but his company’s decision to shutter its greenfield, open RAN-based network, along with a $22 billion debt load, marks the beginning of spectrum sales.

Tim Farrar, an analyst at TMF Associates, explained in a research note EchoStar still owns 30MHz of 3.45GHz spectrum and approximately 20MHz of 600MHz spectrum, both of which were purchased in government auctions.

The crown gem of EchoStar’s spectrum is AWS-4 in the 2GHz band, which SpaceX contends is underutilised.

“Going forward it is therefore quite likely that there will be further transactions, perhaps just between AT&T and T-Mobile, or perhaps involving EchoStar’s key midband holdings in AWS-3 and AWS-4,” Farrar stated.

“However, we are highly skeptical about suggestions SpaceX would bid for the AWS-4 2GHz MSS spectrum, or that SpaceX wants to run a terrestrial wireless network, at least at a price level that EchoStar would take remotely seriously.”

He noted AT&T is less specific about its plans for the 600MHz band, which he previously thought would be of more interest to T-Mobile.

“However, it is not implausible to think that AT&T might want to use the 600MHz spectrum as leverage for a trade with T-Mobile to allow AT&T to acquire T-Mobile’s 3.45GHz and C-band spectrum,” he explained.

AWS-4
In May, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) called out EchoStar’s lack of use of its AWS-4 spectrum licences following a complaint by SpaceX.

SpaceX appeared to have an ally in FCC chair Brendan Carr, who pressed EchoStar to part with spectrum it wasn’t using. A meeting between Ergen, Carr and US President Donald Trump may have smoothed the path for the sale to AT&T.

“AWS-4 is the elephant in the room,” stated LightShed Partners analyst Walter Piecyk in a research note. “For SpaceX, access to AWS-4 could be transformative. The spectrum would supercharge Starlink’s direct-to-device ambitions, potentially enabling streaming-grade sat-to-phone services.”

Farrar estimated the AWS-4 spectrum to be worth around $20 billion but Semafor reported Ergen values it at $30 billion.

SpaceX may see AWS-4 as critical to its sat-to-phone roadmap, but SpaceX is unlikely to pay anything close to $25 billion,” Piecyk stated. “Instead, its leverage lies with the FCC”.

“A sympathetic regulator could push for shared use or apply pressure on EchoStar by threatening to revoke rights.”

Farrar posted on X Verizon should buy EchoStar’s AWS-3 and lease AWS-4 in urban areas, while continuing to hold onto the latter to build its non-terrestrial network (NTN) for a direct-to-device (D2D) satellite constellation.

“But if TMUS [T-Mobile] wins the bidding this would change,” he said on X.

He explained if T-Mobile bought all of EchoStar’s AWS-4 the latter will likely abandon its D2D constellation while allowing the mobile operator to provide more spectrum to partner Starlink for its satellite service.

“AT&T has already used portions of AWS-4, briefly lighting up spectrum during Covid,” Piecyk stated. “That suggests AT&T radios can handle at least half the band without new capex. In a spectrum-scarce world, that’s a significant edge that neither T-Mobile nor Verizon currently enjoys.”

He noted while Verizon is not an obvious first mover for EchoStar’s remaining spectrum, “it has a history of opportunistic spectrum grabs at high prices”.

“It should now feel some additional pressure given AT&T’s moves.”

Peter Adderton, the founder of Boost Mobile and now CEO and founder of operator MobileX, told The New York Post another scenario could include the Trump administration taking a stake in SpaceX in return helping it acquire EchoStar’s AWS-4 spectrum.

T-Mobile US introduced nationwide network slicing for businesses as part of a new plan called SuperMobile, which also includes built-in security and satellite connectivity through its partnership with Starlink.

After rolling out its out its standalone (SA) 5G network across the US in 2020 ahead of rivals AT&T and Verizon, T-Mobile launched its 5G-Advanced network nationwide in April. It uses the network to deliver network slicing to businesses and first responders.

Using the operator’s entire 238MHz of spectrum, network slicing allows it to steer, prioritise and manage traffic based on users’ priorities at a given time.

The plan includes advanced encryption, device authentication and privacy protections, along with Threat Protect to secure smartphones, even on public Wi-Fi.

A representative for T-Mobile told Mobile World Live all the security elements are in the operator’s Trust Center, which is a hub for cybersecurity certifications, reports, audits, and scores.

Companies such as Delta Air Lines are using SuperMobile to support complex operations and for team coordination while Axis Energy Services benefits from satellite connectivity to maintain communications with employees in remote oil fields

SuperMobile will be available starting today (28 August) for businesses of all sizes. The operator is offering a free 30-day of the plan.

T-Mobile US detailed a management reshuffle in preparation for the pending departure of two of its big-name bosses.

Ulf Ewaldsson is leaving his role as president of Technology and Callie Field is departing as president of T-Mobile’s Business Group.

In an SEC filing, the operator explained CTO John Saw would replace Ewaldsson. The executive is the former EVP of advanced and emerging technologies and played a key role in developing T-Mobile’s 5G network.

A man in a pink jacket and trousers, wearing a white T-shirt with a magenta logo, stands on stage holding a microphone. Behind him is a large screen reading “DTW Ignite” with colorful graphics. Next to him is an AWS panel labeled “Built for telecom innovation.”.

T-Mobile credited Ewaldsson (pictured, left) with deploying the next-generation infrastructure, so is likely keen to assure markets of Saw’s credentials in the field.

It highlighted Saw’s hand in the “introduction of new advanced network technologies and “the deployment of previously underutilised spectrum”.

T-Mobile offered no dates for Ewaldsson’s retirement, but was more forthcoming regarding Field, who is scheduled to depart her role on 30 September and take-up an advisory position running until 31 March 2026.

Field (pictured, left) thanked mentors including former CEO John Legere, current CEO Mike Sievert and COO Srini Gopalan in a post on LinkedIn, referring to fresh challenges and the chance to “explore passions waiting in the wings”.

Board member Andre Almeida is due to take on Field’s work in the role of president of Growth and Emerging Businesses, overseeing T-Mobile’s “broadband, T-ads, financial services, enterprise and government businesses”.

He resigned his board seat effective from 31 August: T-Mobile stated the move “is not the result of any disagreement between Mr Almeida and the company”.

A national advertising review board recommended T-Mobile US discontinue certain savings claims in its advertising, which were found to be unclear and potentially misleading after rival Verizon filed a complaint.

A panel from BBB National Programs’ National Advertising Review Board (NARB) focused on Verizon’s challenge about T-Mobile’s “switch and save” claims and comparisons involving streaming services.

The panel found the phrase “plus streaming” used in mobile service price comparisons is confusing and did not clearly communicate the nature of the savings to consumers.

NARB recommended that T-Mobile stop using claims like “families can switch and save 20 per cent vs. the other big guys plans plus streaming services” due to their unclear nature in conveying actual savings.

The panel advised T-Mobile to adjust its advertising to avoid implying that every one of its plans is cheaper than its competitors’, or all consumers will save money or 20 per cent on all plans compared to rivals AT&T and Verizon.

Independent non-profit BBB National Programs’ National Advertising Division (NAD) recommended T-Mobile discontinue savings claims that appeared in a “save on every plan” brochure, two commercials, “top three plays of the day” and “holidays are coming in hot: Families: Save 20%,” a T-Mobile USA press release, and on the operator’s savings calculator website.

During the challenge, T-Mobile told NAD it had modified the savings claims to explicitly reference streaming services and modified its disclosures for the savings claim.

NARB did not agree with NAD about a third implied claim about Verizon’s plans including a mandatory streaming fee and the panel disagreed with NAD’s recommendation that T-Mobile discontinue rather than modify the challenged advertising.

T-Mobile stated it disagrees with the panel’s decision but said it will comply.

NAD sided with T-Mobile in March in a dispute over Starlink satellite connectivity after Verizon complained its rival’s promotions were misleading.

T-Mobile US completed its acquisition of most of UScellular’s wireless assets, significantly expanding its network and customer base through the $4.4 billion deal.

The completion of the deal came after the mobile operator agreed in early July to end its diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) practices, which led to the US Department of Justice’s antitrust division dropping its investigation.

The agreement included T-Mobile acquiring customers, stores and 30 per cent of UScellular’s spectrum.

Former UScellular customers will be allowed to stay on their current mobile phone plans with most of their devices continuing to work on T-Mobile’s network.

Once the networks and systems are integrated, T-Mobile stated those subscribers can migrate to one of its premium plans which include benefits such as free international roaming, device upgrades, and access to Netflix or Apple+.

Lastly, UScellular’s former subscribers now have access to T-Mobile’s fixed wireless access broadband service in their homes.

T-Mobile CEO Mike Sievert stated on last week’s Q2 earnings call adding UScellular’s spectrum will give it a 50 per cent increase in capacity and a larger presence in rural markets.

Former UScellular CEO Laurent Therival stated the completion of the deal “is a win for customers and communities across the United States”.
