Partners in the 6G-XR consortium proved the potential of beyond 5G and 6G networks to handle immersive services including holograms in validation tests of a pair of tricky use cases, participant Capgemini stated.

The professional services company, Ericsson, i2CAT Research Centre and Vicomtech worked on holographic communication and the provision of advanced extended reality (XR) services using edge computing in the recent demonstrations.

Ericsson and i2CAT handled the holographic element.

They used dedicated i2CAT technology to deliver consistent holographic calling in tests conducted on Ericsson standalone 5G infrastructure in Barcelona and Madrid. The demonstration used proactive congestion detection, a new algorithmic capability, to monitor network performance in a cell and adapt the stream accordingly during periods of high traffic.

Intelligent traffic prioritisation was also highlighted: this is a means of activating an on-demand quality feature which puts holographic traffic first and can access additional resources if required.

Manuel Lorenzo, Ericsson R&D Spain head of technology and innovation, said the demonstrations “lay the groundwork for the future of XR applications across sectors such as remote industrial maintenance and advanced education, where instant, high-fidelity collaboration is vital”.

All four companies participated in the edge computing demonstration, which proved the ability of XR services to select the optimal node.

Capgemini stated the trial showed distributed XR services could employ standardised APIs to adapt to the underlying compute environment.

It added the demonstrations prove “how network intelligence, edge discovery and application-level adaptability” would shape the future of XR and holography.

Aurora Ramos, R&D connectivity and network lead at Capgemini Engineering, predicted the demonstrations would prove to be important in the development of 6G.

“It further lays the basis for substantial improvement on how people communicate, collaborate and experiment in the digital world.”

SNS Telecom and IT offered a reality check on the benefits private networks provide a host of industries, detailing gains made by companies including Tesla and LG Electronics as it released details of its latest research into the market.

Analysts said dedicated networks deployed in facilities and campuses or in WAN scenarios are boosting operations in shipping ports, manufacturing, airline operations, sports clubs and in the public sector.

SNS Telecom and IT explained 5G is now surpassing LTE as the dominant private network technology and maintained a forecast the sector would yield revenue of $7.2 billion by the close of 2028.

Sales growth is pronounced against a “relatively stagnant” public mobile network sector. The company noted standalone 5G core network revenue is on the up, but RAN is flat following declines in 2024.

Along with Tesla and LG Electronics, SNS Telecom and IT stated Hyundai also reaped benefits at its production facilities: all three “eliminated connect-related automated guided vehicle stoppages” using private networks.

It stated Peel Ports Group reported a tenfold increase in network performance at the Port of Liverpool in the UK, a facility noted to be unfriendly to Wi-Fi due to the amount of metal in place.

English football club Crystal Palace FC is employing headsets connected to a private 5G network to improve matchday experiences for partially sighted fans.

SNS Telecom and IT also noted private networks are beginning to be incorporated by design, pointing to a prison project in the US state of Georgia using Band n48 CBRS spectrum for indoor and outdoor 5G coverage, and a Hitachi Rail facility in the state of Maryland.

The research company expects more than 70 per cent of investments in private networks to be in standalone 5G iterations, fuelled by Industry 4.0 and critical communication needs.

Widespread adoption of digital technology including drones, intelligent sensors and robotics would have significant impact on critical infrastructure in Italy, TIM outlined in a report, citing reduced operating costs and improved reliability.

In the TIM Research Centre’s smart infrastructure report, it highlighted the potential for predictive maintenance of water and energy networks, and benefits from real-time monitoring of roads among its examples.

It argued AI, IoT and related technology would be able to transform infrastructure to make it more efficient, cut waste and deliver greater resilience.

In a statement accompanying the report, Telecom Italia noted the importance of 5G and advanced cybersecurity in supporting these digital technologies.

It predicted the use of smart monitoring systems in the road network could prevent up to 27 per cent of issues with the “oldest structures” and cut overall operating costs of tunnels, bridges, roads and related civil works by up to 31 per cent.

For electricity grids, IoT sensors and management platforms were positioned as having the potential to optimise distribution, up reliability and cut costs by almost €700 million per year.

It also noted “the transformation of electricity grids from the centralised to the smart grid model would increasingly allow the integration of energy from renewable sources”.

The water segment was tipped to generate savings to the tune of €2.6 billion by 2030 from consumption monitoring and detecting hidden faults in real time using smart meters and advanced monitoring systems.

TIM chief enterprise and innovative solutions officer Elio Schiavo stated the “digital challenge of Italian infrastructure can no longer be postponed”, adding “investing in its digitalisation guarantees security, efficiency and sustainability, allowing us to transform our country into a smart land, an essential step for the development of Italy”.

The report was put together in collaboration with Intesa Sanpaolo Innovation Center, Osservatori Digital Innovation of Politecnico di Milano and Comtel Innovation.

ABI Research forecast the global 5G network slicing market would increase from $6.1 billion in 2025 to $67.5 billion by 2030, growing at a CAGR of approximately 70 per cent.

The surge is fuelled by increasing adoption in both the enterprise and consumer sectors.

It expects the enterprise segment to account for 64 per cent of the total revenue by 2030, making it the largest opportunity for mobile operators.

However, in advanced economies such as North America and Europe consumer demand is expected to outpace enterprise adoption.

The fastest growth will come from so-called “carpeted verticals” such as retail, stadiums and financial services, which have simpler requirements and faster return on investment compared to mission-critical sectors like the oil and gas industry.

ABI Research senior research director Dimitris Mavrakis stated “industrial manufacturing will remain an important vertical for network slicing, albeit at a substantially slower growth rate than carpeted verticals”.

The consumer sector is predicted to account for $24.3 billion of the network slicing segment from 2025 to 2030, followed by retail ($23 billion), stadiums ($9 billion), industrial manufacturing ($7.8 billion), and financial services ($2 billion).

Currently, Asia-Pacific far and away leads the market, representing 91 per cent of global revenue in 2025, largely due to China’s aggressive standalone (SA) 5G deployments. However, Mavrakis noted the region’s share will drop to 73 per cent by 2030 as other regions catch up.

North America is expected to lag EMEA until 2029, when it is expected to take the second spot.

Among trends impacting the 5G network slicing market, the integration of SA 5G and cloud-native tools into telecommunications networks has proven more complex than anticipated.

Mobile operators, including China Mobile, T-Mobile US, and Deutsche Telekom, are starting to monetise network slicing, despite initial challenges in penetrating the business sector.

ABI Research also factors in the maturity of SA-capable smartphones, which expands the consumer addressable market.
