LIVE FROM MOBILE WORLD LIVE UNWRAPPED DIGITAL INDUSTRIES: Capgemini Invent revealed its secure real-time AI translation service, BabelSpeak, is showing strong pilot results following its launch through Telenor’s AI Factory, an initiative created in partnership with Nvidia to accelerate AI deployment across the Nordics.

Thordur Arnason, global AI GTM lead at Capgemini Invent, told Mobile World Live the service has been trialled with DNB, Norway’s largest bank, to assist Ukrainian refugees, and extended to the Red Cross and the Norwegian police for use cases including border control.

He emphasised that BabelSpeak is designed for sensitive, privacy-critical scenarios, highlighting Capgemini’s fully controlled AI pipeline spanning speech-to-text, translation and synthetic speech output. While consumer tools like Google Translate and ChatGPT may be sufficient for many situations, “what we are targeting, though, are these sensitive conversations where privacy and security is key”.

Efficiency and cost benefits are also major drivers for adoption: “This is a replacement for human translators. We are able to produce translations at a fraction of the cost,” Arnason noted. The Red Cross, for example, previously had to limit the use of translators due to high costs, but now sees potential to scale BabelSpeak across operations at under 10 per cent of previous translation expenses.

With traditional human translators, “you cannot do ad hoc, short planning windows, or the kind of translation situations that we can meet with AI”, Aranson explained, adding that public sector spending on translation services in Norway alone reaches roughly €150 million annually.

Meanwhile, Johannes Aasheim, head of telecommunications Nordics at Capgemini Invent reflected on the initiative’s inception, which came after Telenor and Nvidia announced a partnership at Mobile World Congress in 2024 to accelerate the operator’s internal AI capabilities and provide AI solutions for businesses across the Nordics. Capgemini was then brought in to support market strategy and boost AI. “Together with Nvidia and Telenor, we pushed for a launch within months. We wanted to have an MVP in the market very quickly,” he added.

Looking ahead, the company sees potential for adoption across a wide range of sectors, including telecommunications, manufacturing and energy industries. Aranson added that the service “will be in pilot at least six months more before we are happy”.

But the next stage of the rollout will focus on expanding language coverage, testing translation accuracy across 100 supported languages, and scaling the platform for high-volume, real-time use cases.

LIVE FROM MOBILE WORLD LIVE UNWRAPPED DIGITAL INDUSTRIES: IBM expert Priya Kurien highlighted how AI represents a transformative $300 billion opportunity for the manufacturing sector and service providers, but cautioned the former needs to focus on business outcomes.

She explained AI is expected to impact manufacturing by 2 per cent to 3 per cent, translating to the $300 billion opportunity based on the industry’s $14 trillion global size.

“So that is what we’d expect to see as the impact that it will have on the manufacturing industry,” said Kurien, research director, IBM Institute for Business Value. “It wasn’t like it was something that should surprise anyone because manufacturing covers so many industries.”

Kurien noted the manufacturing industry is advancing from early AI experimentation to strategic integration, with many plants utilising connected machine data for operations and predictive maintenance, and a significant portion implementing autonomous operations.

IBM’s research with 2,500 manufacturing managers found 65 per cent of the plants extensively use data from connected machines for continuous improvements, while 35 per cent have some autonomous operations in place.

“Data is the starting point for AI and the fact that there are this many of them using this is creating an interesting starting point,” she said.

She noted a yearly study by IBM found manufacturing CEOs prioritise productivity, profitability, forecast accuracy, supply chain performance, and talent retention, all areas where AI can provide significant improvements.

“AI can help on that forecast accuracy, but that is tying into one of the top challenges that manufacturing CEOs talk about, which is supply chain performance,” Kurien said. “In a view of recent disruptions, how can you ensure that you don’t disrupt your manufacturing is one of the key elements CEOs are looking at.”

AI also plays a key role across employee and talent retention for manufacturers. Kurian explained in an industry faced with an aging workforce, AI can augment employee tasks and promote safer environments to help them be more productive.

CAIOs
IBM research also emphasised the need for manufacturing companies to hire a chief artificial intelligence officer (CAIO.) She said CAIOs are becoming the glue across industries because they enable cross-functional collaboration.

“Dedicated chief AI officers provide an approximately 10 per cent better return on their AI investment,” Kurian said. “This is cross-industry, but it’s because the CAIO is translating the exec strategy to technical implementation.”

CSPs
She explained communication service providers (CSPs) play a crucial role by enabling advanced connectivity and services such as AI visual inspections to support quality control and real-time decision-making in manufacturing.

Operators should communicate in meaningful terms with manufacturers, such as how to reduce unpredicted downtime, to effectively support outcomes through connectivity and AI.

Manufacturers should focus on business outcomes, starting with efficiency improvements like reducing downtime and enhancing quality, then expanding AI integration across supply chains for transformational impact.

“You do need to start with business outcomes,” she said. “You need to have some specific metrics that you want to achieve so that you can track that this has been relevant and successful.”

LIVE FROM MOBILE WORLD LIVE UNWRAPPED DIGITAL INDUSTRIES: One of Honeywell’s leading engineering experts highlighted the human and safety aspects involved in bringing technologies including AI into the day-to-day operations of the company’s aerospace unit, explaining cautious optimism is the watchword of its approach.

Senior engineering programme manager Juan Fuentes (pictured) told Mobile World Live Honeywell is of course interested in bringing in fresh technologies to improve its operations and production, but emphasised the nature of its work means it must keep an eye on safety and regulations.

Fuentes said a key digital transformation strategy for Honeywell Aerospace is to find common ground between “the different sectors of the business and making sure we invest strategically in the proper technologies” and infrastructure.

The nature of Honeywell Aerospace’s work means safety is a key consideration.

“So, although there’s all this new technology like AI that we’re so interested in bringing in…at the same time we have to make sure that these technologies are safe, that they have been proven.”

Digital twins are one tool the company is employing as part of a broader modelling and testing set-up which Fuentes said it is putting a “lot of investment” and resources into, using the technologies across all aspects of its product development cycle and even reaping benefits in the running of its factories.

“We’re able to create models around all those processes and systems and then develop a plan to ensure that everything is going to be there for when our new products go into production.”

Human touch
Honeywell targets technologies which are a “force multiplier”, a means of “making us more productive, more efficient” and which improve working conditions.

The company engages closely with its staff, ensuring they have a say in what is needed and how it should be implemented.

During the interview, Fuentes also discussed the impact technology is having on data generation and analysis, and delved into the benefits open architectures could bring to industrial players. Click here to view.

LIVE FROM MOBILE WORLD LIVE UNWRAPPED DIGITAL INDUSTRIES: The CTO of Schneider Electric’s Industrial Automation business Aurelien Le Sant (pictured) identified gaining a competitive edge through efficiencies as the main motivator for industrial players adopting cutting-edge AI systems.

Discussing its work with manufacturers and other enterprises on use of the technology, he cited cost reduction, predictive maintenance, faster commissioning of new solutions and system agility as potential benefits.

Le Sant noted elements aided by AI can contribute to “operational efficiency and sustainability KPIs because you consume less to produce more”.

Discussing the current generation of AI technology, which rose to prominence with the hype around generative applications such as ChatGPT, he noted the sector was “very young” with regions rather than specific industry segments pulling ahead.

Citing China as an example, Le Sant noted in some countries “people are more willing to take risks and to experiment” as they try to gain an edge, with others looking on and likely to adopt “a bit later”.

“It’s not really an industry [leading], it’s more a culture of enterprise,” the expert emphasised. “We see some partners going really full speed into it”.

Although conceding training an AI model was “very energy consuming,” he noted the efficiencies able to be gained over a long period of time from use of systems improved by the technology would yield green gains.

LIVE FROM MOBILE WORLD LIVE UNWRAPPED DIGITAL INDUSTRIES: Antonio Calderon, CTO at NATO’s Communications and Information Agency (NCIA), told Mobile World Live about how a multinational 5G initiative is laying the groundwork for interoperable communications across military and civilian applications.

Despite the rapid acceleration of technology today, Calderon emphasised that the military alliance’s mission “remains the same: to defend our 1 billion citizens of the 32 NATO nations”.

To achieve this objective, “our agency is at the forefront on understanding new technologies, testing, experimenting which ones are the most impactful for our mission, and delivering those capabilities across all NATO nations”, he explained.

Central to this effort, Calderon highlighted the alliance’s Multinational 5G (MN5G) initiative, which reflects a “dual-use paradigm” where civilian technologies are adapted for defence purposes.

Launched in 2024, MN5G aims to bring together NATO allies to integrate 5G into military systems, with a focus on standardisation, security and the development of future-proof military-grade applications.

Calderon explained that interoperability remains central to the initiative, not only for military operations and political coordination, but also for engagement with civilians during crises. He noted the importance of ensuring communications with emergency services such as hospitals and fire brigades, emphasising the need for seamless connectivity.

Networks and platforms could “benefit enormously if, for example, we bring 5G as the connecting fabric that will absolutely be a cross force multiplier for our missions”.

Initial support
While Spain, Italy and Turkey are initial participants in MN5G, Calderon confirmed that other nations are also in the process of joining. He stressed that collaboration between countries and across sectors is essential to success: “It’s people connecting people, and then technology, processes and standards come afterwards.”

Early takeaways from the project’s Spain rollout have highlighted the importance of integrating operations across NATO’s five domains, air, land, sea, cyber and space as well as effectively managing limited resources such as spectrum, Calderon explained.

He also noted that NATO can tap existing frameworks to achieve multinational standardisation quicker. “I’m also trying to influence NATO that we don’t need to reinvent the wheel…  we can faster deliver what we want by adopting existing standards that industry has been leveraging for years.”

Looking ahead, NATO aims to have laid the digital foundations to keep up with the pace of innovation for future generations. “The motorways are there, and now it’s more about reinventing applications and use cases.”

LIVE FROM MOBILE WORLD LIVE UNWRAPPED DIGITAL INDUSTRIES: Agricultural and heavy-equipment maker John Deere is on the cutting edge of Industry 4.0 technologies such as private 5G networks and digital twins, but its secret sauce lies in the company’s technology stack.

Jason Wallin, senior principal architect for tech stack at John Deere, explained to Mobile World Live the company employs the same technology in its factories and for use in its farming and construction equipment.

“We are benefiting from our own product innovation that we put into the technology for our products [and] being able to use those same practices inside the factory,” Wallin said. “We think about where we’re at in our industry 4.0 journey, and getting ready to move into our industry 5.0 journey as that continues to evolve over a period of time.”

For its manufacturing facilities, John Deere relies on private 5G networks to track every part in the assembly process of farm and construction equipment such as large tractors and earth moving equipment.

Digital twins
Wallin said the 5G networks enable two types of digital twins inside the manufacturing factories.

“The first digital twin is what we call our operational digital twin that creates a metaverse, if you will, of our overall factory and how it’s laid out,” he said. “How every nut, bolt and screw moves throughout the factory.

“How each one of the components are sub-assembled in the facility as well coming together with the machine leaving at the other end.”

The second digital twin records the torque of each screw, nut and bolt as pieces of equipment move through the assembly line. The company’s high-end XR farm combine has over 18,000 individual part numbers.

“We can then take that information that we have and apply that to what it does in the real world after it is fully assembled, at the customer’s location and to doing its primary purpose.”

Multiple technologies
John Deere is also employing computer vision, AI, ML and deep data analytics in its factories.

Using the same technology stack, the company’s autonomous tractors can use GPS and multiple cameras to plow and till fields prior to planting crops.

John Deere’s See & Spray technology can differentiate between a weed and plant while determining the correct planting depth and amount of water needed.

“We can drive through the field at about 13 miles an hour,” he stated. “And while doing that, we’ve got 64 different individual cameras that are taking pictures of every plant as it goes through the field, determining if it’s a healthy plant that we want to continue to grow or it’s a weed that we need to apply a chemical to.”

Wallin noted John Deere’s technology stack can also be licenced for use by farmers with smaller operations to provide them with the same benefits.

“Really what it comes down to from our vision is us providing the right level of technology for our customers to be able to be as efficient as they can, no matter the size of their operation,” he noted.

LIVE FROM MOBILE WORLD LIVE UNWRAPPED DIGITAL INDUSTRIES: Experts from Siemens and Telefonica pushed the benefits of 5G network slicing for industries with distributed assets, as they discussed a pilot being undertaken for the water industry in Germany.

Speaking at a keynote session, Siemens director industrial wireless communication Daniel Mai (pictured, above) and Telefonica Germany head of new partner concepts Andreas Cott argued their ongoing project provided the reliability required for that specific vertical and had wider implications.

Cott (pictured, below) said slicing was “an opportunity for us as telcos to develop scalable, vertical-specific connectivity solutions,” highlighting its work for the water sector with Siemens had “no comparable solution” while providing the operator with “a lighthouse on how to leverage slicing for industry specific challenges”.

A man with short dark hair and a beard wears a white dress shirt and black headphones. He sits indoors, gesturing with his hands in front of him, and appears to be speaking or explaining something, with an expressive facial expression.

“Of course, challenges differ among different verticals but the approach, the way of working we get here is transferable,” he added.

Mai noted given the assets of water companies are so spread out compared to campus-based enterprises, “public mobile network is a better choice” rather than private network architecture.

Discussing the water deployment, Mai added “it’s not about the lowest latency or high throughput,” noting these were “the buzzwords MNOs like to talk about,” but highlighted in this case the key requirements were “reliability and continuity,” with applications generally requiring response in “seconds not milliseconds.”

Steep learning curve
Reflecting on the work, Mai said it had “been a steep learning curve”.

“We learnt a lot. Telefonica learnt a lot. Because we have different views and Telefonica traditionally looks at their core applications like connecting smartphones. Industrial assets is a different game,” Mai said.

He added it has discovered how the public network was structured is a “highly dynamic environment”.

LIVE FROM MOBILE WORLD LIVE UNWRAPPED DIGITAL INDUSTRIES: Jennifer Artley, SVP of Verizon Business (pictured, bottom left) revealed a recent 5G private network deal for Thames Freeport in the UK has officially moved from the planning to building phase, with the goal of going live in March 2026.

Artley, speaking alongside Thames Freeport interim CEO Stuart Rimmer (pictured, bottom right), described the feat as a huge step in what is proving a pretty complex rollout, after it landed the deal alongside vendor Nokia in June.

Thames Freeport is one of the UK’s largest maritime logistics and manufacturing regions, and the technology upgrade is part of wider long-term efforts to revive the UK’s Thames Estuary region.

Artley said Verizon was deploying six private 5G cores across three major sites: the DP World Gateway; Ford Dagenham; and the Port of Tilbury, which are some of the biggest trade hubs in the UK connecting to more than 130 global routes.

What makes the deployment particularly complex is the fact that requirements are not the same at each site and each “tenant has their own unique needs and unique operations. So we are building this in real-time”.

It is aiming to complete the full deployment by the end of 2025, said Artley, before testing begins in the new year and  “the goal is to go live in March, which will be a big milestone”.

She added that while Verizon’s technology will serve as the foundation of the project, it is “part of a multi-billion dollar effort to transform the Thames Estuary into one of Europe’s most technologically advanced commercial hubs”.

AI city
Echoing Artley, Rimmer said the project is not only about driving economic benefits but social benefits too, and it is targeting high-profile partnerships to achieve its wider goals.

“We’ve got an ambition to create an AI city, said Rimmer. “Now those ambitions have to be met by some really ambitious partnerships and that’s how we developed the partnership with Verizon. It’s not just about putting the wires in, but actually its about sharing a vision for future prosperity.”
