INTERVIEW: Cohere Technologies CEO Ray Dolan (pictured) told Mobile World Live (MWL) the company’s universal spectrum multiplier (USM) software would be in place with one of the world’s largest RAN players by year-end.

The vendor previously claimed its USM product has the potential to improve 5G capacity by up to 50 per cent by providing spectral efficiency to relieve congestion across lower frequency bands.

He told MWL Cohere Technologies has spent around a year fine-tuning USM and is now “close to finishing up”. He highlighted that USM improves 5G capacity without the need to rip and replace gear in an operator’s network.

“By the end of this year, we will have inserted our solution along with one of the largest mature RAN players in the world,” he explained. “And that will be done in a way that ports nicely to all mature RAN players.”

Dolan describes USM as a software product that works in a greenfield open RAN architecture and “now can be proven to be consumable in a closed RAN mature architecture”.

Cohere Technologies conducted a field test with Vodafone Spain earlier this year that resulted in a 50 per cent boost in spectral efficiency, but Dolan told MWL the results were actually a little higher.

He noted the company has ongoing tests in Toronto with Bell Canada, which he stated are being observed by a number of operators

“It generated fabulous results, and those results have been shared not just with Vodafone, but with a number of operators around the world,” he said. “So, there’s a broad operator consensus that’s being built.”

Dolan noted there will be some additional steps to scale USM with RAN vendors ahead of deployments with operators “but it will be relatively straightforward beyond that end of year through point”.

In the short term, the CEO stated his company has enough cash on hand through the early part of 2026.

“We do plan to fund off of the success of what we’re doing right now in Canada because we’re really getting pretty strong support from operators.”

Once USM becomes commercially available, Dolan stated there is at least a $100 to $500 billion revenue opportunity for Cohere Technologies.

Telstra, Bell Canada, Intel, Juniper Networks, and VMware have invested in Cohere Technologies, while former Vodafone Group CTO Johan Wibergh joined its board last year.

INTERVIEW: Ronnie Vasishta, SVP Telecom at Nvidia (pictured) poured cold water over any notion AI is a bubble, arguing the level of investment and early success being made by other companies in the sector shows concrete progress.

Vasishta’s comments come a few months after major technology investor Elliott Management claimed AI is overhyped and Nvidia’s share price was in “bubble land”, after the AI powerhouse became the world’s most valuable company earlier this year with a market capitalisation of more than $3 trillion.

However, Vasishta told Mobile World Live he is now rarely asked if AI is a bubble anymore, and it is clear from the way the technology is being used and invested in this is not the case.

Vasishta said there is clear evidence of the impact of the technology for its telecoms partners and other companies around the world in how they are now entwining AI into their business models and ways of working.

“I think the question of bubble is kind of past us and we’re moving into the phase of innovation around the deployment of AI.”

Echoing some of the comments Vasishta made during a keynote at MWC Las Vegas 2024, the executive said the “AI clock moves very fast”, pointing to use cases for consumers, along with opportunities to tap into the technology for telecoms providers and in enterprise services.

Following a brief dip over the past few months, Nvidia shares traded at their highest level this week, with the company closing in on Apple to hold the title of the world’s most valuable company for the second time this year.

INTERVIEW: UScellular CEO Laurent Therivel (pictured) lambasted prohibition of the Federal Communications Commission’s (FCC) ability to issue spectrum, arguing it is vital for US operators’ future and a sign greater collaboration between the public and private sectors is needed.

During an interview at the recent MWC Las Vegas 2024, Therivel told Mobile World Live it is preposterous the US regulator had its spectrum authority removed (a point echoed by CTIA president Meredith Attwell-Baker in her event keynote).

Therivel said the block on the FCC’s spectrum authority means the US mobile industry does not “have the tools, the lifeblood that we need to continue to deliver great service” to consumers and enterprises.

Therivel called for fresh work to improve the interface between public bodies and private companies, noting a relative arsenal of spectrum held by the nation’s Department of Defence could help meet operators’ growing requirements.

The CEO noted standalone 5G is already providing UScellular with a solid use case in the form of fixed wireless access, a service which fits well with its largely rural customer base.

But he also discussed the changing nature of UScellular’s business, with enterprise and IoT opportunities growing in importance relative to its typically consumer-focused approach of the past.

The CEO also explained why a huge $4.4 billion deal with T-Mobile US struck earlier this year was necessary for UScellular and offered predictions on how it might reshape both operators’ businesses in the coming years.

LIVE FROM MWC LAS VEGAS 2024: Wilson Electronics rebranded the company as Wilson Connectivity and announced a private 5G service blended with its Distributed Antenna Systems (DAS).

The hybrid DAS system, dubbed Private 5G by Wilson Connectivity, enables customers to support both public and private networks on a unified platform.

The company stated it lowers the cost of integrating and managing multiple networks while allowing businesses to offer private networks in outdoor and indoor applications.

It enables enterprise customers to create a private network that they control and allows them to overlay a public network on top of that.

Bruce Lancaster, CEO of Wilson Connectivity, stated customers can support public and private networks with its DAS technology that can distribute RF sources from 150MHz to 5GHz.

Lancaster told Mobile World Live it supports speeds over 1Gb/s based on the amount of spectrum and whether it’s licensed or unlicensed.

He noted Private 5G by Wilson Connectivity is a 3GPP-based service that is equipped with security and mobility capabilities developed over decades.

“Unlike Wi-Fi, it is a SIM-based security versus password,” he said. “It addresses indoor and outdoor efficiently versus Wi-Fi which is purely indoor.”

Lancaster noted Private 5G by Wilson Connectivity is currently in beta testing.

LIVE FROM MWC LAS VEGAS 2024: Venice Goodwine, CIO of the US Department of Air Force (pictured, right), called for help from the industry to solve “wicked problems” in modernising technology and methodologies across communications.

In her role as CIO of the Air Force and the Space Force, Goodwine is looking at 5G to enable connectivity for all personnel across 180 base installations. She explained Air Force Airmen and Space Force Guardians deployed at the tactical edge need to have confidence that they are always connected to their devices no matter the circumstances.

“That is why 5G is important to us, because it’s global,” she explained. “It allows me to move throughout the enterprise, whether it’s at home, whether it’s in the office, in a hotel, or whether that’s barracks to the battlefield.”

She stated the Air Force and other government agencies are embracing 5G, commercial Wi-Fi and commercial ISPs to ensure they have a roster of global transport technologies.

While the Air Force can maintain security “behind the fence” of military bases, it needs cybersecurity measures outside of those locations.

“What I need from you is to help me at the demarcation line, to ensure that beyond that is also secure,” she said. “Resiliency for me is under attack in a contested environment, do I have the ability to still operate my mission?

“And what 5G gives me is these different capabilities so I longer have to think about just one type of mode. I now have diversity in my transport mechanisms.”

Goodwine is open to new ideas to solve her wicked problems, but she has a few caveats in place.

“I need to modernise my approach,” she said. “I need to modernise my methodologies, but I’m mired in my own culture, so I want you to help.”

She continued: “I will say to you, help me solve some of these wicked problems, but please don’t let me enforce my culture on you. Hold me accountable.”

LIVE FROM MWC LAS VEGAS 2024: The US Department of Defense (DoD) and other government agencies are standing behind open RAN as the backbone of next generation communication systems.

Dr. Tom Rondeau, principal director for FutureG, DoD, explained government agencies are collaborating with universities and telecommunications companies to develop software-defined open RAN-based networks.

“We’re seeing this on the ground in Ukraine all the time,” he said. “The pace of innovation warfare that’s happening there is astounding and can be terrifying.

“When we look at the wireless networks and how important communication is to this ability to fight wars and to be relevant to advance our capabilities and concepts, we have to be more innovative. We have to be more adaptive.”

Rondeau explained the government agencies are using open RAN as the basis for its open centralised unit, distributed unit (OCUDA) programme.

The three core elements of OCUDA are the virtualisation of high-performance hardware: a commercial software-base for CU and DU to enable unique DoD capabilities: and a management architecture that includes spectrum and intelligent network features.

He stated the DoD put its money and efforts to resolve closed network problems by “breaking open these boxes even further and creating an open-source model of the future of telecommunications”.

“We want early adoption by researchers, so we’re already with many of the top-tier universities in wireless communications and engineering to build the talents, build the expertise inside of them,” he explained.

He noted with OCUDA, the partners can create more resilient, agile networks at a large scale.

“It allows us to create resilience in the system, because, again, we have more eyes on the system,” he said. “We have more ability to understand what’s happening out there, and move patches, and move features at the rate of relevancy.

“This should be transformative in the world of telecommunications.”

LIVE FROM MWC LAS VEGAS 2024: Generative AI (genAI) is ready for prime time across a range of enterprise use cases, but a Qualcomm executive noted businesses need to fully embrace them.

“We’ve reached a point where for enterprises generative AI is not a luxury, not an option to be considered, but it’s a necessity at this point in time to move forwards,” said Durga Malladi, (pictured, right) SVP and GM, technology planning and edge solutions at Qualcomm.

On the consumer front, he stated genAI is changing how users interact with their devices through voice commands. It can also translate languages to enable users to speak to one another across their devices.

“Now, let’s actually shift towards enterprise use cases,” he said. “This is where there is a massive opportunity for productivity increases.”

For enterprises, Malladi noted genAI can translate documents from one language to another or summarise Word documents to create detailed, short notes.

“These are pretty good tools in the sense that you’re about 90 per cent there, and so it really simplifies the amount of work that you need to do,” he explained.

Another area where genAI is getting tuned up is across software organisations. Software engineers can ask large language models (LLMs) to make code for a specific topic, which saves time and reduces the need for debugging.

“These productivity tools are clearly transforming a lot of the enterprises, and it’s important to actually embrace them so that employees get to use them as much as possible,” he noted.

In addition to productivity tools, genAI can also benefit enterprises’ bottom lines by improving efficiency.

It also enables better collaboration between enterprise teams, or with employees in remote locations.

“The ability to communicate in a very easy way makes it bigger,” he said. “The other part that I think is essential is that we are just at the beginning of generative AI running into workforces at this point in time.”

While most LLMs are currently trained on open-source information, enterprises will benefit from using their own data for specific LLMs.

“Once you have these fine-tuned models for this enterprise-specific data, then you start seeing a very different kind of use case that will come in,” he noted.

LIVE FROM MWC LAS VEGAS 2024: Juan Ramirez, a director for the US Department of Defense (DoD), admitted the agency is still discovering what is possible through 5G across back-end business operations and the future of war fighting, but backed it to be “truly transformative”.

Ramirez, who serves in the 5G cross functional team for the office of the DoD Chief Information Officer, took to the stage in Las Vegas to discuss the authority’s vision for 5G and underscore “how this aligns to the department’s overall strategic vision for information technology and advancement”.

He spelled out three key priorities, with the bulk of the strategic objectives intended to modernise information networks “to rapidly meet mission and business needs”.

“The centre aim here is to adopt, develop and deploy commercial technology for assymetric warfighter advantage,” he explained.

The first objective for DoD is around commercial 5G installations. Ramirez said it aims to improve commercial infrastructure processes at military installations, enabling MNOs to get to their base and deploy infrastructure. He admitted this process in the past has been “complicated, lengthy and decentralised.”

Priority number two is to develop and build unique 5G features and systems, introducing tailored security measues for the department’s data and missions. This will also include non-commercial use cases and applications, such as remote maintenance and AR and VR training.

Last but not least, DoD wants to use 5G in expeditionary, tactical environments and across global transport operations. This will include deploying private 5G infrastructure.

Ramirez also touched on open RAN, stating deploying the approach would offer “greater choice, security and resiliency, while spurring competition and innovation”.

LIVE FROM MWC LAS VEGAS 2024: While access to technology and connectivity is important, it is perhaps even more imperative that it is used in the right way, argued leading football player Asisat Oshoala who serves as the GSMA’s ambassador for its Breaking Barriers campaign.

Oshoala, who currently plays for Bay FC and has a long career in the sport at numerous clubs in Europe, is the founder of the Asisat Oshoala Foundation. The foundation works with marginalised young women in Nigeria and across Sub-Saharan Africa, aiming to provide them with the skills they need to be successful in life, including promotion of digital literacy.

Speaking in today’s keynote, Oshoala said the foundation focuses on young women in particular because she feels “they have less opportunities in society” and “easily get discouraged when it comes to sitting at top places”.

“I’m just trying to give these young girls the confidence to start early, to let them know that there’s hope for the future,” Oshoala explained.

With regards to mobile technology, Oshoala said its use in pushing her agenda goes “both ways”, and it is important that “young girls had proper knowledge about the difference between having a phone and having the internet and making good use of it”.

“There are kids that want to go on YouTube. They want to watch dance videos on Instagram and on X. They want to do this thing, which is fun and good. But I feel like they need to know that there’s more than just the social media for them.”

During her presentation Oshoala also urged governments in emerging countries to promote more affordable technology and digital literacy initiatives.

LIVE FROM MWC LAS VEGAS 2024: As AI use cases continue to proliferate at a rapid pace, Salesforce executive Paula Goldman advised businesses to take a hard look at how they employ the agents in the workplace.

Goldman, chief ethical and humane use officer at Salesforce, stated the industry is at an inflection point for AI transformations in the workplace. She explained agentic AI should be viewed as a partner and not just a tool.

Agentic AI can act independently to achieve company goals or make decisions on its own but there needs to be guardrails.

With AI known for generating hallucinations, companies need to put controls in place to thwart any potential issues of bias.

One example of the benefits of agentic AI is using it during a company board meeting. Goldman noted AI was able to detect bias during the meeting, but participants were reluctant to call it out.

“Sometimes people in the room haven’t caught that pattern, or sometimes they do but find it difficult in the moment to raise the issue. But AI is not afraid to raise it, and as a result, they have much richer conversation and have better decision making,” she said.

Another example is of a nurse using AI to gather information from a patient during intake. AI can take down the questions and answers, which allows the nurse to focus on the patient’s expressions.

The future of AI comes down to the choices businesses make on how to use it.

“To make AI work for our businesses, we have to make sure it works for the people our businesses serve and the people our businesses employ,” she said.

LIVE FROM MWC LAS VEGAS 2024: Elena Fersman, VP and head of Global AI Accelerator at Ericsson (pictured), opened up on the vendor’s role in a consortium it launched last month in partnership with a group of leading operators, explaining there was a growing maturity within the industry to build digital platforms through open APIs.

The 5G API supergroup includes Ericsson, Google Cloud and leading operators Vodafone Group, AT&T, Verizon and Deutsche Telekom, among others. The group aims to coordinate their API efforts and broaden the field of app and service developer platforms they can access.

Fersman said “opening up things in general” is a great benefit for the whole of society, and the open API approach represents a shift in mentality within the industry, in comparison to how 5G was developed.

“Some years ago, when we were starting to research 5G and how the 5G network should look like, in the beginning we didn’t know what the driving use cases are. We’re always saying, let’s release this technology and let’s see what services will come on top of that.”

By offering this innovation platform to developers, Fersman believes there is an opportunity for all sorts of innovation, allowing them to design their services on top of the network capabilities that are being offered.

“In that sense, APIs are crucial to boost the usage of the network, to bring more services that telecoms vendors maybe have not thought about yet.”

During her keynote presentation, Fersman also discussed a recent hackathon hosted by the vendor, stating that around 35,000 people within Ericsson have now been trained with AI skills.
