Samsung Electronics followed through on a commitment to restructure its chip business, putting the new head of its Device Solution (DS) division in charge of its memory business and the Samsung Advanced Institute of Technology.

Jun Young-hyun, who was appointed president of the DS business in May, was also named co-CEO.

The DS business comprises the memory, system LSI and foundry units. It the past, each unit had its own president.

Previous memory unit head Lee Jung-bae was named an adviser.

Samsung stated the leadership changes prepare it for its next growth phase and strengthens competitiveness.

The move signals a shift in strategy to turn around the key memory business, which accounted for 76 per cent of DS revenue in Q3.

In early October, Jun issued a surprising apology for delays in shipping new memory chips for AI applications and poor results for the chip unit and vowed to reorganise the division with a focus on culture and processes.

The chipmaker faces rising competition from local rival SK Hynix, which has a lead in high bandwidth memory (HBM) chips used for AI workloads, raising questions about its fundamental technological competitiveness and prompting the reshuffle.

Nvidia is reportedly working to certify Samsung’s latest AI memory chips.

Other appointments include Han Jin-man, previously the president of Device Solutions America who was named head of the foundry business, while Nam Seok-woo was appointed CTO of the unit, a newly created position.

PARTNER CONTENT: James Zeng, president of Huawei’s Microwave Product Line (pictured), opened up on the company’s vision for microwave backhaul, and how new innovations in the sector are contributing to a smooth evolution to pave the way towards 5.5G.

At this year’s Global Mobile Broadband Forum in Dubai, UAE, Huawei emphasised work being done across its microwave products to enable efficient 5.5G construction. Among its latest offerings, the company pushed its new platform, MAGICSwave, which can serve to upgrade transport networks and support ultra-wideband and multi-channel technology to boost backhaul efficiency, meanwhile helping telcos achieve a simplified network.

A key feature of the solution is an ability to deliver higher capacity with simplified architecture for urban areas, longer transmission distance in suburban locations, and long scenarios, enabling networks to sustain evolution over the next decade.

For James Zeng, the importance of these innovations is summed up by the fact that operators can plan investments for upgrading and expanding their backhaul network without hardware disruptions, relying on the future proof concept of Huawei MAGICSwave that allows a very smooth evolution.

Smooth Evolution
James highlighted the current problem which Huawei is seeking to address. One of the biggest challenges facing telcos is, for example, moving from 4G to 5G. From this evolution alone, 15 per cent to 20 per cent of microwave links must be reconstructed every year, “creating an investment loss for telcos”.

“If a telco today plans to deploy a new microwave link for their 4G sites, it won’t be long before there is a need to upgrade to 5G.  As new applications emerge and urbanization accelerates, it becomes more and more difficult for operators to accurately estimate future traffic in the transmission link planning phase. Both aggressive and conservative initial capacity reservation may lead to a waste of investment if the microwave system does not have smooth evolution capability. That’s why Huawei is introducing the new MAGICSwave platform: with it, there is no need to make additional investments in a brand new hardware system when they are upgrading to 5G – instead they only pay for the capabilities they need through software or card/RF level hardware upgrade, and all those require a platform with strong smooth evolution capability.”

Work on microwave upgrades will continue throughout this year and beyond. James explained the company will launch a new platform, MAGICSwave, to the market later in 2023, marking significant progress in smooth evolution capabilities and beyond.

With it, there is no need to make additional investments in a brand new hardware system when operators are upgrading to 5G – instead they only pay for the capabilities they need through software or card/RF level hardware upgrade.

A simplified target network
For urban scenarios, James put the priority on E-band technology investment, targeting 25Gb/s bandwidth with unique 2T2R design to save the hardware quantity, which would put it in a position to meet backhaul capacity requirements of 5G and 5.5G in the future for dense populated areas.

For suburban scenarios, Huawei’s new Carrier Aggregation (CA) can enlarge the deployable scope of this technology through a wideband IBW feature, thus operators can enjoy the benefits of it more widely (such as hardware simplification and future smooth upgrade capability).

For backbone long haul scenarios, Huawei makes it as light as short haul, for example, only radios for a typical 8+0 link. For the very first time, operators can enjoy the benefits of CA and high Tx Power at the same time without system gain loss in long haul scenarios.

Furthermore, Huawei’s MAGICSwave platform can reduce antenna quantity and size, as well as RF units, up to 75 per cent, while supporting the smooth evolution from 4G, to 5G, 5.5G and beyond.

“We hope that by releasing this new technology to the market, microwave is able to be simple for today and support the next decade’s evolution of networks,” said James.

Protect investment and fit for all
Interestingly, James dived deeper into the capabilities of Huawei’s microwave solutions today, stating that, as a technology, it is much stronger than what 4G and 5G currently needed it to be.

James reiterated the fact that Huawei is working on introducing new concepts from the microwave sector “so that telco investments can be protected”.

“They only need to pay for the capabilities that are relevant to them, when they are evolving into the future,” he said.

Huawei’s commitment to investment in microwave is absolute, added the executive. “We have learnt that more than 60 per cent of base stations are benefiting from microwave backhaul. Microwave will remain a primary backhaul technology and it allows telcos to modernise and deploy base stations fast,” added James.

While explaining requirements for backhaul differ for telcos and are also different for various network technologies, James also noted that as it serves varying wireless sites, there is a need to take into account different phases of demand across geographical markets.

“Microwave needs to be able to support all telcos, in all markets. These include: pioneering 5G regions such as the Middle East, China, South Korea and Japan; European telcos that are now deploying 5G and the third wave of 5G coming from countries in Latin America, Africa and Asia.”

Connecting the unconnected
Summing up the overall benefits of microwave, James was also keen to emphasise that the solutions are not just for advanced 4G, 5G and 5.5G networks, but are also serving to bridge the digital divide.

“As a modern wireless backhaul technology, microwave bears the mission to offer access to remote areas, including mountainous locations and across underdeveloped markets. Huawei is trying to increase the cost competitiveness and the performance of our solutions, so that it can connect the unconnected.”

PARTNER CONTENT: At the 2023 Global Mobile Broadband Forum, Huawei took its mission to bring 5.5G into reality to the next level, launching the industry’s first full-series of solutions for 5.5G. Here, Cao Ming, President of Wireless Solution, explains the core benefits of its new offering, the current state of the 5G market, how it can drive cutting-edge services and the technology’s potential across the globe.

Speaking at MBBF 2023 in Dubai, UAE, Huawei’s President of Wireless Solution Cao Ming opened an exclusive media roundtable by providing a background on where 5G stands today, and how the network technology is developing to 5.5G to usher the next connectivity revolution.

With large-scale 5G now deployed for around half a decade, it is stated that there are 260 million commercial networks in operation, while the number of 5G base stations has hit the 4 million mark. By the end of this year, GSMA Intelligence forecasts the global 5G user base will reach 1.5 billion.

“The rapid deployment of 5G networks globally has brought business value to telcos. The industry has enjoyed the dividends of 5G so far,” said Mr. Cao.

Pointing to some of the services enabled by the network technology, he noted capabilities of 5G are ten-times stronger than 4G, resulting in fast development of HD video calling, cloud gaming and a host of other use cases.

However, this is not the whole 5G application offering, this is just the start. Through 5.5G, which in turn results in ten-times stronger network capabilities and the ability to offload on to the cloud, there will be greater demands for services such as 3D games and extended reality (XR) services, which the executive tipped to become mainstream.

That’s why Mr. Cao believed it is important for the whole industry and ecosystem to pursue these market trends and ensure development of a 5.5G ecosystem, such as chipsets, applications, devices and tools to enrich future applications.

“With stronger 5.5G network capabilities, telco business scopes can increase, as can the scopes of content providers, device providers and chip manufacturers, enabling new revenue streams in the 5.5G era.”

Where 5.5G stands today
With hype growing, where does 5.5G sit in the market today? Mr. Cao hailed current momentum for 5.5G around the world, stating it is already in the phase of accelerating commercialisation and there are key reasons why it should be introduced.

First, it is simply because the industry is already ready for it. With Release 18 set for 2024, the completion of this phase will finalise the definition of 5.5G specifications, while Sub-6GHz is the band capable of scale deployment, and its development is to be discussed at the upcoming World Radiocommunication Conference (also held in Dubai) in November.

Secondly, in total, nearly 20 international operators have verified the functions and capabilities of 5.5G, according to Mr. Cao, meaning networks in some key developed markets could pull the trigger.

Finally, Mr. Cao again pointed to applications and services. “Today, we’re seeing the initial achievements of 5G development and the scope of business has increased as a result. 5G today is not just about connecting people, but also connecting homes, things, vehicles and industries. All of these services are on a fast track.”

Huawei’s suite of solutions
With the launch of Huawei’s 5.5G portfolio, Mr. Cao said since the key elements that support the development of the mobile communications industry, such as the ecosystem, network and technology, are ready, the company believes 2024 will be the year of full-scale commercialisation of the technology.

Huawei’s full-series of 5.5G products can enable ultra-high energy and O&M efficiency and spectrum utilisation.

At a high level, Mr. Cao explained the vendor’s 5.5G solutions can help operators efficiently build networks through continuous innovations across five pillars of basic capabilities: broadband, multi-band, multi-antenna, intelligent and green.

These complement the core benefits and iconic features of its 5.5G offering, which can enable 10Gb/s downlink, 1Gb/s uplink, 100 billion connections, ultra-low latency and full scenario ‘0 bit 0 Watt’ for optimal energy efficiency.

On the first pillar, Mr. Cao explained ultra-wideband was essential for telcos as it provides the ability for the equipment to support a large-range of dis-continuous bands, rather than requiring operators to deploy multiple pieces of kit.

Multi-band is equally important, as through the development of the industry, the spectrum varies from Sub-1GHz, Sub-3GHz, C-band, and Sub-6GHz as well as mmWave in the future. Huawei’s products can support multiple bands across a range of spectrum within one box. “For telcos, this can reduce deployment costs and reduce pressure on antenna space, leading to lower tower rent.”

Coming to multi-antenna, Mr. Cao said “Huawei has been promoting this for years”, explaining that as spectrum was a limited resource, there is a need to deploy and define technologies that can increase spectral efficiency. Through a multi-antenna approach, “this technology has provided end users with multi-fold better experience, and has reduced the cost for telcos to licence the spectrum,” he added.

A fourth critical pillar is a very on-trend topic in the industry – green. The deployment of technologies always mean the consumption of a large amount of energy. Here, Mr. Cao explained the complexities of taking the correct approach because the volume of traffic often varied in the same sites or same areas, and its innovations set out to ensure a reduction in energy consumption when traffic is low.

Finally, Mr. Cao outlined the benefits of IntelligentRAN, a solution which supports high level autonomy to a network. He explained that in the 2G era for example, there was mainly a requirement to make phone calls and send SMS. In the 5G era, services are a lot more diverse and complex, due to gaming, live streaming, short videos and other examples, meaning there is a need to reduce the cost and difficulties on the network O&M. Through IntelligentRAN and creating a more intelligent network, telcos can provide these “enhanced capabilities”, supporting optimised service experience and network energy efficiency.

Delegates listen to a presentation during Huawei's MBBF 2023

Summing up Huawei’s 5.5G solutions, Mr. Cao believed 5.5G will be a key mobile technology in the coming years. Compared with 5G, its network capabilities are ten-times stronger. “Huawei’s 5.5G solutions can help operators smoothly evolve their 5G network resources and infrastructure to 5.5G.”

Mr. Cao added that the company’s fundamental principles of innovating products and solutions are designed to “protect long-term telco investment”.

Global 5.5G potential
Many telcos today already have sufficient spectrum resources and they are “in a position to provision 5.5G services”, according to Mr. Cao.

In China for example, China Mobile and the shared wireless networks China Telecom and China Unicom are in that very position. However, Mr. Cao acknowledges that China might be different from other countries, with operators in other markets having both limited spectral resources and a high demand for access to new bands.

A market with huge opportunity is the Middle East. The region has been a pioneering 5G market and several operators have already begun discussions with Huawei on the development of 5.5G “several years ago”.

Ongoing discussions with du, for example, resulted in two major developments. At this year’s MWC in Barcelona the operator signed an MoU with Huawei on 5.5G, and at MBBF 2023 the companies jointly showcased the world’s first 5.5G villa, allowing users to enjoy a range of experiences powered by the technology such as VR gaming, use of 3D glasses and access to 8K HD videos.

Zain also signed an MoU with Huawei in March, and the pair completed the verification of Passive IoT in warehouse scenarios in July, and jointly held a 5.5G Smart City Summit in Riyadh.

Turning attentions to Africa, Mr. Cao added Huawei was dedicated and committed to providing diverse solutions for different scenarios and for markets at different phases of development.

He pointed out that progress of the mobile industry in the continent was different to others because even several parts of the same country are at different stages of development.

For example, in South Africa 5G has already been deployed in major cities, but in many rural areas 3G still is the dominant form of connectivity.

Mr. Cao explained it was a market decision as to when 5G and even 5.5G would be available in African countries, based on the maturity of the device ecosystem and market development.

And learnings can be taken from leading 5G markets, such as the Middle East, China, Europe and countries in Asia-Pacific, on how to ensure the market is ripe and ready for the introduction of advanced technologies.

“Huawei has been collaborating intensively in different regions. We hope that through our efforts, countries and regions can enjoy the convenience brought by 5G sooner, so that we can help to eliminate that digital divide,” concluded Cao Ming.

PRESS RELEASE: At the Global Mobile Broadband Forum (MBBF) 2023, Huawei unveiled the iHashBAND 2.0 solution — a 5.5G-oriented evolution of the 5G multi-band coordination solution iHashBAND. iHashBAND 2.0 overcomes the limitations of conventional band division and carrier configuration and achieves spectrum pooling, a new mode of multi-band coordination, which enables revolutionary unified allocation and flexible combination of spectrum resources and provides a strong boost for 5.5G to achieve its promise of 1 Gbps uplink and 10 Gbps downlink.

iHashBAND 2.0 incorporates Huawei’s innovative flexible spectrum access (FSA) and multi-band serving cell (MB-SC) technologies designed for both uplink and downlink. The solution also introduces uplink and downlink spectrum pooling technology for the first time. The biggest benefit of this technology is that discrete spectrum resources across bands, carriers, and timeslots are centrally managed and scheduled. In this way, whether in the uplink or downlink, optimal bands and carriers can be selected in just milliseconds in response to service requirements and network conditions, meaning that virtual high-bandwidth carriers are possible to provide superb user experience. With spectrum pooling enabled through air interface reconstruction, iHashBAND 2.0 improves spectrum utilization by 40%. The solution has been incorporated into new industry standards and will pave a new way for multi-band coordination.

Solari Yu, President of Huawei’s SingleRAN Product Line, remarked: “5.5G brings new experiences, new connections, and new services. iHashBAND 2.0 exemplifies a significant breakthrough in air interface reconstruction and is the world’s first technical solution to implement spectrum pooling, and its release also proves our leading innovation capabilities in 5.5G. We look forward to working with industry chain partners to promote standardization and boost the device ecosystem to deliver an ultimate 5.5G experience.”

LIVE FROM GLOBAL MBB FORUM, DUBAI: Bocar A Ba, CEO of Samena Telecommunications Council (pictured), bemoaned a lack of access to capital for investment in infrastructure, calling for more financial support for the industry to deploy 5G and 5G-Advanced networks and address key challenges such as the digital divide.

Ba said the deployment of 5G-Advanced, the overriding topic at this year’s event, had the potential to achieve improved connectivity experiences for people and machines, immersive experiences fusing physical and digital worlds through extended reality, enhance applications and logistics systems and crucially mitigate connectivity gaps for underserved areas and communities.

However, given the scale of investment required to meet already massive demands, Ba believes it is now time to “reflect on and realise new ways” how such connectivity will be funded and financed.

Ba also referenced the ongoing fair-share debate, a prevalent issue in Europe in particular which has seen operators lobby for large content companies to contribute to the cost of building networks.

“Over the last two years, significant effort has been made to highlight and press upon the need to identify and reach out to new stakeholders, especially the digital economy players, to contribute. Moreover, new methods and new financial instruments have also been brought to the surface.”

He said Samena had been actively pushing for further investment from relevant stakeholders, including investment groups and financial instituions, however “unlocking access to capital remains a reclusive goal”.

“There is persistent lack of trailblazing on this front,” he concluded.

LIVE FROM GLOBAL MBB FORUM, DUBAI: Marco Zangani, chief network officer at Vodafone Italia (pictured), argued the time is now right for the operator to leave an initially pragmatic approach to deploying 5G behind and accelerate a revenue-generation strategy for the technology.

Following initial trials in 2018, Zangani said Vodafone opted not to start its 5G journey with massive deployment covering all of its operating countries.

Such an approach “was really not possible, given the high level of competition”.

Instead, it focused primarily on the customer and took action where it saw demand for advanced services.

Today, Vodafone has deployed 5G in 332 cities in Europe, while claiming numerous firsts in the continent including roaming in 2019, a standalone network in 2021 through Vodafone Germany and deployment of the first hybrid private network in 2022.

With a solid foundation in place, Zangani provided a three-pillar strategy towards cashing-in on the next-generation technology including providing fibre-like data rates, offering premium services through Massive MIMO and deploying private networks, an area where the executive believes “the real 5G services and applications can be seen”.

“Here, we expect the real potential of 5G will be unleashed,” he said.

The company highlighted four potential sectors where private networks could prove a cash cow: ports; factories; healthcare; and campus and industrial areas.

He cited automated guided vehicles, connected mobile workers, asset tracking and AR as potential use cases.

Zangani added private networks helped ease pressure on the industry somewhat, providing operators the ability to implement key elements of the 5G ecosystem without massive additional investment.

He added the next development of 5G would likely come through implementing a multi-service network, which serves as a single, programmable low-latency infrastructure with standalone and slicing capabilities, along with delivery of real-time applications.

LIVE FROM GLOBAL MBB FORUM, DUBAI: Karim Benkirane, CCO at UAE-based operator du (pictured), backed 5.5G networks to help operators overcome challenges that exist in deployment of fixed wireless access (FWA), with global connections tipped to hit 300 million by 2028.

In the opening keynote, Benkirane noted around a third of a person’s time is spent in the home, meaning demand for improved FWA was naturally increasing. He said the technology had the potential to provide better experiences than fibre in the future, but there are three key challenges that need to be met.

Firstly, he believes the outdoor mobile 5G experience is better than indoor, which is an existing barrier for operators and their partners.

On the customer side, Benkirane claims they don’t know the difference between fibre and FWA because for them “it’s connectivity, it’s Wi-Fi”. For FWA to truly take-off, it needs to provide a differentiator in terms of speed, latency and capacity.

Last but not least, the du executive pointed to the challenge in segregating FWA and mobile traffic on the network, to ensure it is delivering the best experience possible.

Citing Ericsson research, Benkirane believes current FWA connections of around 125 million can grow to 300 million in five years, with deployment of 5.5G the answer to challenges hindering the technology.

In a partnership showcased at the event, du has teamed with Huawei to deploy the operator’s 5.5G offering at what it claimed was the first 5G-Advanced villa in the world, covering the entire space with advanced FWA technology.

Commitment
Also appearing on stage, Saif Bin Ghelaita, executive director technology development affairs at UAE regulator TDRA, provided further backing to 5.5G.

He said the country was at the forefront of both 5G and 5.5G, and there was a shared commitment from the regulator and operators to develop the latter. He said the upcoming World Radiocommunications Conference, to be held in the UAE in November, could help towards modernising regulation and securing key spectrum for 5.5G.

LIVE FROM GLOBAL MBB FORUM, DUBAI: Huawei rotating chair Ken Hu (pictured) underscored the significant gains made since 5G services first debuted in 2019, but emphasised the industry is still at the very beginning of a journey to ensure the technology reaches its full potential.

In his keynote, Hu said globally mobile operators have deployed about 260 5G networks, covering nearly half of the world’s population. The adoption of 5G has been much faster than 4G, with some 1.5 billion connections worldwide in just over four years, he stated, noting ARPU has been raised by 10 per cent to 25 per cent in some markets.

“In the past couple years, we have achieved a lot of progress with 5G. Clearly it is a new growth engine for mobile operators.”

Hu added the biggest difference with 5G is on the B2B side, giving operators the capabilities to target industry verticals with custom offerings.

Looking forward, the executive said the industry has much more work to enhance the capabilities of the technology to create better user experiences, scale and maximise its substantial investment.

“I think our industry has a great opportunity to build new capabilities,” because the B2B sector gives operators a chance to play a role in industrial digitalisation, Hu said. “For that, we need to go beyond connectivity, and we need to think about how we can build our capabilities for the cloud, AI and systems integration.”

GSMA director general Mats Granryd agreed on the speed of uptake, noting it took 12 years for 4G to reach 1 billion connections, compared to just three years for 5G to hit that milestone.

“We also see the willingness of consumers to pay slightly more, 10 per cent to 15 per cent more, which is encouraging for operators” he said during the keynote Q&A session with Hu.

Echoing Hu’s point on the non-consumer segment, Granryd believes the potential for 5G is stronger on the B2B side with the emergence of use case across almost all sectors.

He cited GSMA figures forecasting 5G connections to hit 5.2 billion by 2035. “We are very bullish on the future.”

PARTNER CONTENT: The 14th edition of Huawei’s Global Mobile Broadband Forum (MBBF) returns to the ultra-modern city of Dubai, with the spotlight on how to ‘Bring 5.5G into Reality’, and again featuring a vast line-up of executives from across the world speaking on the hottest issues impacting the industry.

The event runs from 10 to 11 October at the Jafza One Convention Centre, with support from industry partners GSMA, GTI and the Samena Telecommunications Council. It is set to attract more than 1,200 influential leaders from operators, vertical industries and the wider ecosystem.

The two-day conference and exhibition gives executives in mobile and adjacent vertical industries the opportunity to hear, and observe, how 5G business models, the overall ecosystem and 5.5G commercialisation are evolving in the Middle East and all around the world.

First full-series 5.5G product solutions
One of the biggest highlights of this year’s MBBF will be the release of the industry’s first full-series 5.5G products and solutions. Since 19 operators joined the GSMA 5G Futures Community this March, there has been considerable progress on the innovation and verification of key 5.5G technologies and scenarios. Huawei, with this advocate launch, will help operators smoothly evolve from 5G to 5.5G, promote network experience from ubiquitous gigabit to 10Gb/s, and help operators build simplified, green, and intelligent top-quality networks. The next question is which operators will experience Huawei’s 5.5G products?

As the definition of the main network capabilities of 5.5G is to improve the bandwidth capability by 10 times based on 5G, achieve a 10-fold increase in the number of connections, 10-fold latency reduction, and 10-fold energy efficiency improvement, it imposes strict requirements on wireless technology innovation.

With the launch of the industry’s first full series of 5.5G products and solutions, Huawei will reveal its latest technologies and hard capabilities, such as ELAA-MM, ultra-bandwidth, “0 bit 0 watt”, and network intelligence enabled by large models. It is expected to generate widespread attention from the global ICT industry.

First 5.5G outdoor showcase in the Middle East
During MBBF 23, Middle East operators will jointly launch the first overseas 5.5G outdoor showcase in Dubai, featuring 10Gb/s peak rate, cost-effective reduced capability (RedCap) innovations, and FWA² home experience, all showing the reality of 5.5G.

Now that 5G FWA has become a benchmark service in the Middle East, local operators have focused on FWA², which provides differentiated services to different customers to help operators in the Middle East continue to succeed in 5G.

This year’s MBBF will also will host special invitation-only discussions. Returning again for its 24th anniversary is the prestigious CTO Roundtable on the opening day, where mobile industry leaders will share 5G best practice and explore 5.5G innovations.

As operators continue to build high-quality networks, how can they work with industry partners to create a prosperous industry ecosystem, sustain 5G business value, open up new business growth, and enable enhanced network experience and sustainable development?

MBBF 23 provides the optimal platform for global ICT leaders to talk and share ideas. In addition to the FWA business that stands out in the Middle East, it is expected that more business applications, for example, naked eye 3D, XR, and AIGC, are destined to become hot topics.

Join us in Dubai to gain exclusive insight into these new trends, as we ‘Bring 5.5G into Reality.’
