Oppo launched its Find X9 Series to the global market following its release in China earlier this month, spotlighting the devices’ cameras, performance and battery capacity.

The line-up comprises the Find X9 and Find X9 Pro models.

Find X9 Pro has a 200MP telephoto camera developed in collaboration with specialist manufacturer Hasselblad, while the standard model features a 50MP triple-camera set-up including ultra-wide and periscope telephoto lenses.

Both devices have Sony sensors and use Oppo’s proprietary Lumo Image Engine to enhance clarity and colour accuracy while reducing processing demands. They also support 4K video resolution and advanced AI-enhanced photo editing features.

Both handsets in the Find X9 Series are powered by MediaTek’s Dimensity 9500 chipset, built on TSMC’s third-generation 3nm process.

Battery capacity is another selling-point highlighted by Oppo. The Find X9 has a 7,025mAh unit, while the Pro variant has a 7,500mAh battery, the largest capacity available on an Oppo flagship.

The Chinese vendor noted its new silicon-carbon battery technology is designed to maintain up to 80 per cent capacity after five years of typical use.

The series is now available in selected markets. In the UK the standard version is priced from £899 with the Pro at £1,099.

India’s smartphone market grew 7 per cent year-on-year in Q2 2025 following a cautious first quarter, as easing inventory issues and new product launches drove demand, Canalys research showed.

Shipments reached 39 million units during the quarter, with Vivo leading the market at 8.1 million units and a 21 per cent market share. Samsung followed with 6.2 million units and a 16 per cent share, driven by financing offers on its A-series handsets. Oppo rose to third with 5 million units, edging out Xiaomi, which also shipped 5 million but declined 25 per cent. Meanwhile, Realme rounded out the top five with 3.6 million units, down 17 per cent.

“Vivo’s new launches were widely embraced by channels, driven by strong partnerships, while rivals maintained a more measured approach in Q2,” noted Sanyam Chaurasia, principal analyst at Canalys.

Chaurasia also highlighted rising competition beyond the top five, with Apple taking sixth place. The iPhone 16 series led more than half of its shipments, though the 16e model lost momentum due to consumer concerns over its limited camera and Apple Intelligence features.

The market’s growth was largely driven by a wave of new product launches in Q2 following a restrained first quarter where vendors scaled back shipments amid high inventory levels. The recovery took place despite a slow seasonal period and external pressures including extreme weather, US tariff tensions and wider geopolitical uncertainty.

Looking ahead, Canalys expects India’s smartphone market to rely heavily on channel execution amid weak organic demand in the second half of 2025. Incentive schemes, retail upgrades and financing options, particularly for mid to high-end models, are expected to drive sales through the country’s upcoming festive season. While these efforts may improve short-term sales, Chaurasia forecasted a modest decline through 2025 due to persistent structural challenges.

Huawei faced intense domestic competition in the opening quarter of 2025 from smartphone rival Xiaomi, which moved to the top spot in China’s market, data from IDC showed.

Despite Huawei’s shipments increasing 10 per cent to 12.9 million units and share rising by 1 percentage point to 18 per cent, it fell to second place.

Xiaomi regained first place after nearly a decade, IDC stated, with its shipments growing 39.9 per cent to 13.3 million units. Its market share increased by nearly 5 percentage points to 18.6 per cent.

Oppo and Vivo recorded 3.3 per cent and 2 per cent growth, respectively, and their shares were stable at 15.7 per cent and 14.4 per cent.

Apple’s sales fell 9 per cent to 9.8 million, as its premium pricing prevented it from capitalising on the subsidies, said Will Wong, senior research manager at IDC Asia Pacific. Its share dropped to 13.7 per cent from 15.6 per cent.

Overall market shipments in Q1 increased 3.3 per cent year-on-year to 71.6 million units, aided by government subsidies introduced in January, driving a sixth consecutive quarter of growth.

Rising US-China trade tension and tariff hikes, however, are expected to raise new challenges, such as higher costs and tighter consumer budgets, the research outfit noted.

Oppo claimed to have become the first company to implement so-called Mixture of Experts (MoE) AI architecture on device, a move which apparently enhances processing efficiency and lays the foundations for further integration between the technology and mobile hardware.

The Chinese vendor stated device-based MoE represents a “significant breakthrough” as it activates specialised sub-models to handle specific tasks, “thereby significantly improving processing efficiency and cutting down computing and data transfer consumption”.

It cited laboratory tests which reveal on-device MoE architecture accelerates AI tasks by approximately 40 per cent, thus reducing resource demands and improving energy efficiency.

This results in faster AI responses, longer battery life and enhanced privacy, as more tasks are handled “locally” on the device, explained Oppo.

The vendor collaborated with leading chipset providers to achieve the feat, responding to the challenges of using large AI models which require substantial computation power that impact performance, especially on devices with limited hardware resources.

“By lowering AI’s computational costs, MoE allows more devices, ranging from flagship to affordable devices, to perform complex AI tasks, accelerating AI’s adoption across the industry,” added Oppo.

Oppo stated it remains committed to advancing AI technology and making it more available to users, pointing to more than 5,860 patent applications in the field.

Indeed, the battle is heating up among handset manufacturers to bring viable on-device AI systems to the market.

Notably Oppo rival Honor made a big push around the area earlier this year, while chipmaker Qualcomm has also outlined why AI being placed on-device is preferable over a cloud approach.

Smartphone manufacturer OnePlus unveiled its latest mid-range handset at a launch event in India, with the Nord CE4 being promoted on its Snapdragon chipset, high capacity battery and display quality.

The company noted the handset, priced at INR24,999 ($300), is the fastest charging of its mid-tier Nord range. It is claimed to be able to gain a day’s worth of power in 15 minutes.

Other features highlighted include a high screen refresh rate for lengthy gaming sessions, enhanced photography software and a display able to differentiate between human presses and water droplets so it works in the rain.

In terms of specs, the device runs on a Qualcomm Snapdragon 7 Gen 3 processor, has a 5,500mAh battery, 6.7-inch screen and dual camera system with the main unit at 50MP.

In its market figures for 2023 Counterpoint Research placed OnePlus outside of the top five vendors in India, but noted its shipments in the market had grown 33 per cent year-on-year. The upward trend was attributed to popularity of its products in the so-called “affordable premium segment” of between INR30,000 and INR45,000.

OnePlus sister brand Oppo was the fifth largest in the country by shipments in 2023, the analyst company said, behind Samsung, Vivo, Xoaimi and Realme.

The OnePlus Nord CE4 is now available to order on its website with the device available later this week.

OnePlus recommenced sales of a range of smartphones on its German website after a pause of more than a year, a move made shortly after sister company Oppo settled a long-running patent dispute with Nokia.

The company is currently listing six smartphones including its mid-tier Nord range and foldable Open, and is taking advance orders for its forthcoming flagship device.

OnePlus continued to sell accessories in the country during the ban on its smartphones.

The vendor’s smartphone line was removed from the market in 2022 after a court ruled in favour of Nokia in one of a number of legal battles being fought across Europe between the Finnish company and Oppo, which shares parent company BBK Electronics with OnePlus.

As the legal action rumbled on, there had been rumours both Chinese brands would abandon Europe completely, claims later denied by the pair in a joint statement.

Last week, Nokia signed a patent agreement with Oppo which resolved all pending litigation between the companies.

While OnePlus handsets are back on sale in Germany, Oppo’s website still has a notice stating there is no product information available, adding various smartphones were unavailable in the country.

Oppo revealed details of its upcoming Find X7 series, which is set to include a specific satellite communications version, as the manufacturer becomes the latest to add extra-terrestrial options at the top of its line.

At an event for the Chinese market, Oppo presented the standard Find X7 alongside the Ultra device. The latter is set to have a specific satellite communications iteration, which the vendor notes will offer the ability to make calls, send messages and access navigation with a relevant operator subscription.

On the feature, it also warned the quality of the call “is affected by the relative position of the mobile phone and the satellite”.

The standard, non-satellite, Find X7 Ultra was heavily promoted on the company’s Weibo channel on improvements to the camera system and related software compared to its previous flagship. This included what it terms as the “world’s first dual periscope four-main camera”.

Across all devices in the line, it claims benchmark eye protection on 2K quality screens, alongside improvements to its on-device AI assistant.

In terms of specifications, the Ultra uses a Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 platform, runs a 5000mAh battery, offers a 50MP main camera as part of a quad rear-camera set-up and a 6.8-inch screen.

The standard Find X7 has a slightly smaller screen, triple camera set-up with a 50MP main unit, Mediatek Dimensity 9300 chipset and 5000mAh battery.

Find X7 Ultra and Find X7 go on sale on 12 January at up to CNY6,999 ($981) and CNY3,999 respectively. Full details of the satellite version were not disclosed with no launch date for the model confirmed.

Data from Canalys showed global smartphone shipments ticked down by 1 per cent in Q3, which marked a slowdown in decline for the year.

The research company noted regional recoveries and fresh product upgrade demand offset poor macroeconomic conditions from earlier in the year, but Canalys analyst Toby Zhu cautioned phone vendors should remain cautious about the rebound.

He noted Canalys’ forecasts suggested decelerating medium-to-long-term smartphone market growth and stated the current short-term order surge, combined with reduced supply capacity, could lead to component shortages that would challenge planning and production going forward.

“Meticulous monitoring of stock turnover and end demand is critical to avoid turbulence from high inventory,” Zhu stated.

Samsung held onto the top spot in Q3 with a 20 per cent market share despite a slight dip year-over-year. Apple was in second-place with a 17 per cent market share followed by Xiaomi with 14 per cent.

Rounding out the top-five, Oppo, including OnePlus, was fourth with a 9 per cent market share, primarily due to its strong presence in the Asia Pacific region, while Transsion was fifth with a 9 per cent share. Outside the top five, Canalys stated Huawei recorded a large comeback in its home market driven by its new Mate series. Canalys analyst Amber Liu stated new Huawei and Apple devices outshone other vendors’ flagship series.

Oppo again declared its commitment to the European market and users on the continent, despite the loss of its sole distributor in France adding to woes in Germany.

In a statement to Mobile World Live, Oppo confirmed reports in the French press claiming its exclusive distributor in the country Yang Technology SAS had ceased operations, but indicated its position with regards to Europe as a whole remained unchanged.

“We respect our partner’s decision and hope it will work with related business parties closely for the rest of the proceedings,” the company said.

“Meanwhile, Oppo’s commitment to the European market and users remains unchanged. For existing users in France, they could still enjoy the future OS updates and after-sales service.”

The blow in the French market comes as the company continues a long-running battle with Nokia over patents, which has led to legal hearings across several markets in recent months.

Together with its sister brand OnePlus, the company’s products are currently unavailable in the German market after being pulled in the wake of a court judgement.

Earlier this year, the two brands rebutted claims on social media they were set to quit a swathe of major European markets.

Device manufacturer Oppo closed-down chip design subsidiary Zeku, blaming uncertainties in the global economy and smartphone market in a statement reported by South China Morning Post.

Zeku was founded in 2019 as part of a drive for the manufacturer to design its own semiconductors and was responsible for Oppo’s in-house chip development. The newspaper noted the closure was abrupt, with the business actively recruiting for staff two weeks ago.

The subsidiary’s social media channels, its only remaining accessible online presence, stated it specialised in application processors; short range communication chips; 5G modems; radio frequency silicon; and power management tools.

Oppo regularly features as the fourth-largest smartphone manufacturer in analyst shipment figures. Counterpoint Research figures for Q1 released earlier this week put its shipments at 24 million units, down from 31 million in the comparable period of 2022.

Aside from apparent woes in its chip design unit, Oppo has also been the subject of much speculation in Europe over recent months.

In March it was forced to deny speculation it was set to quit some markets and has been at the subject of a patent row with Nokia which led to it suspending sales in Germany.

Despite the issue, it has regularly reiterated its commitment to the European market and heavily promoted its latest devices in the region.

Sister brands Oppo and OnePlus reiterated commitment to their European operations, rebutting rumours circulating on social media claiming an exit from some markets was on the cards.

In a joint statement from the two brands, both owned by Chinese conglomerate BBK Electronics, the pair reiterated plans to remain in “all the existing European markets and the UK”.

“We had a great start in 2023 with the successful launches of several products in Europe and have a line-up of upcoming products for the rest of the year,” the companies wrote.

“As always, Oppo and OnePlus will continue to provide more innovative products and the best-in-class service for users moving forward.”

The comment came after multiple technology websites reported comments on social media from technology blogger Max Jambor, who claimed he could “confirm” the brands were pulling out of Germany, the UK, France and Netherlands.

His initial post noted a Europe-wide withdrawal was eventually on the agenda, though this was later toned-down to the countries listed.

Neither Oppo nor OnePlus currently sell their smartphones in Germany following a patent row with Nokia, though supply their standard European ranges on the other markets listed.

Oppo entered the global foldable market with the international launch of Find N2 Flip, a smartphone which pitches it primarily against foldable market leader Samsung in the fight for sales for the new form-factor.

Find N2 Flip is Oppo’s first foldable device to be made available outside of its home market of China, where it also sells other foldable models.

Ahead of the global launch event today (15 February), Oppo has been heavily marketing the handset across social media and other mediums.

Find N2 Flip folds in a motion similar to Samsung’s Flip models and the revamped Motorola Razr, akin to a classic clamshell device. Oppo claims it has the largest “cover screen” of any flip phone, referring to the outer display used for notifications.

During the event, Oppo head of Find product line Peter Lee (pictured) noted it had focused on making the cover screen more useful than rival devices.

He said others sported front screens which were too small to be useful, claiming they were limited to “tiny notifications or heavily cropped images”.

Lee added Oppo had been worked with major app providers on delivering optimised front screen notifications.

Find N2 Flip uses the company’s second generation hinge, which Oppo claims has been certified to withstand 400,000 folds and unfolds at standard room temperature.

This, it notes, is equivalent to opening it 100-times a day for more than a decade. Oppo also claims the device outperforms peers in terms of battery life.

Specifications
Find N2 Flip has a 6.8-inch screen when unfolded, 4300mAh battery, dual rear camera system, with the main unit at 50MP using a Sony IMX890 sensor and a 32MP front camera.

It runs an optimised version of MediaTek’s Dimensity 9,000+ chipset.

Find N2 Flip will be available in two colours, with orders starting today (15 February) through selected partner and retailers and availability due from 2 March.

Prices vary by market, but in the UK it is set to be sold for £849.

Oppo committed to implementing FIDO Alliance standards to boost the authentication security on its smart devices, a move the vendor predicted would reap benefits for users by simplifying access to multiple accounts and services.

The Chinese vendor stated it will deploy systems based on current FIDO Alliance specifications, which employ public passkey cryptography to deliver a single sign-on mechanism.

In addition, Oppo plans to contribute to the development of future specifications with the aim of enabling users to use their smartphone as a passkey for services spanning various browsers, apps and platforms.

Oppo claims this will help “create a seamless connected experience” on existing and new devices.

FIDO Alliance was founded in 2012 to develop standards enabling password-free user authentication and login. Oppo explained the group’s latest specification “provides a secure and convenient technical framework” which attracted big names including Qualcomm, Microsoft and Google.

The vendor further noted a typical user today has “dozens of online accounts”, posing a challenge in terms of password management.

It added password-only authentication systems face challenges including “high administration costs” of changing users’ credentials along with the more obvious vulnerabilities caused by weak passwords.

Devicemaker Oppo unveiled its latest partnership with streaming company Spotify, with the manufacturer set to include a range of customisable music player settings in its new operating system.

Oppo promoted a partnership with the music brand in 2021 around personalisable playlists. However its latest deal promises “all-new and customisable music experiences” on smartphones running the latest version of its Android-based OS.

Users with the Spotify app on handsets running ColorOS 13 will be able to view a description of currently playing items by glancing at the device, alongside being able to change tracks without unlocking it.

Other new features, which will be rolled-out gradually, include: improved ways of delivering recommendations to users, a home screen widget, and the ability to set specific music from the app as an alarm tone.

Oppo head of software products Gary Chen claimed the partnership “represents a new exploration into the possibilities of smartphone operating systems”, adding the company wanted its users to be able to “spend more time enjoying music and other most-loved features”.

Oppo appeared to backtrack on a target of becoming a leading smartphone brand in Europe by 2024, while insisting it was fully committed to the market despite being forced to suspend sales of certain products in Germany due to a patent row with Nokia.

In a media briefing, Billy Zhang, VP of overseas sales and services, said there was limited information he could disclose regarding the lawsuit with Nokia, but reiterated it would continue to invest in the country.

The executive added he “firmly believed” the issue would be “properly resolved”.

In June, a German court sided with Nokia in a dispute over a Wi-Fi patent, backing a call by the Finnish vendor to impose an injunction on certain device shipments.

Zhang added Oppo did not plan to move its European headquarters from Germany, while maintaining the row had no impact on any of its other operations in the continent, which go on as normal.

No targets
While reiterating a commitment to Europe throughout the briefing, it appears the company is not as bullish publicly as it was a year ago regarding its hopes for the market.

In March 2021, Oppo’s western Europe president Maggie Xue said it was targeting securing a “leading spot” across the whole continent within the next three years.

Zhang now insisted it did not target being number one in the market, and instead was focused on creating “great products”, with “market success naturally following”.

“As for whether there is a specific target for market position, that is not something we will consider first hand,” he said.

Citing data from Canalys from 2021, Zhang said the company was ranked number four in terms of shipments both globally and in Europe.

Instead of focusing on gaining market share and catching rivals, Zhang argued Oppo did not use a competition orientated mindset, which could lead to going “astray and many of our actions will be based on a quick fix”.

During the briefing, Zhang announced Oppo would hold an event in Paris on 31 August to launch new handset and IoT products for the European market.

Canalys figures showed Samsung was the only smartphone vendor in the top five to register annual shipments growth in Q2 in the Southeast Asia market, with an overall double-digit decline as consumer confidence was hit by growing inflation.

Shipments fell 11 per cent to 24.7 million units, with declines across the five largest markets in the region, Indonesia, the Philippines, Thailand, Vietnam and Malaysia.

“Maintaining device affordability while boosting profitability is the greatest challenge for vendors,” Canalys research analyst Chiew Le Xuan explained in a statement.

“Competition in the entry-level segment has intensified with the introduction of many new products by android smartphone vendors.”

Chiew believes the remainder of 2022 will be challenging as vendors “tackle rising costs, forex volatility and shrinking consumer demand”.

Samsung boosted its share 3 percentage points to 23 per cent, increasing shipments 4 per cent to 5.7 million units.

Oppo’s share was steady at 18 per cent despite a 10 per cent drop in shipments to 4.4 million, while Xiaomi’s share dropped from 22 per cent to 16 per cent as it shipped 34 per cent fewer devices at 4 million.

Vivo’s shipments fell 18 per cent to 3.2 million units, with its share down from 14 per cent to 12 per cent, and Realme’s shipments decreased 22 per cent to 2.6 million and its share 1 point to 11 per cent.

Chinese vendor OnePlus offered assurances customers in Germany would not be impacted by the removal of its devices from the market, a move taken while its sister company Oppo attempts to resolve a patent dispute with Nokia.

Various media reported OnePlus and Oppo had halted shipments to Germany after an initial decision in the IP spat went Nokia’s way.

Fosspatents reported in June a German court sided with Nokia in the dispute over a Wi-Fi patent, backing a call by the vendor to impose an injunction on device shipments.

At the time, Nokia stated it had conducted negotiations fairly, Fosspatents wrote.

But in a statement, OnePlus accused Nokia of seeking an “unreasonably high fee” which it believes is “detrimental” to the role of IP in “driving innovation”.

Attempts to resolve the matter are “ongoing”.

OnePlus added it “diligently complies with the laws and regulations” in all markets where it has a presence and emphasised the injunction is “limited to the sales and marketing of certain products in Germany”, with no other European nations affected.

It offered assurances around its commitment to Germany, noting owners in the country would continue to have access to services including “regular software updates” and after-sales care.

Fair terms
Nokia issued a comment in response, stating it was the third time courts in Germany ruled that Oppo was using its patented technologies in its smartphones and selling them illegally without a licence.

“The Court also found that Nokia has acted fairly. We hope that OPPO accepts its obligations and, like its competitors, renews its license on fair terms,” Nokia spokesperson added.

Malaysia’s smartphone market fell in the opening quarter due to supply shortages and weak consumer demand, with IDC forecasting shipments for the full year to decline 5 per cent.

The research company expects continued supply constraints for low-end 4G models to make it difficult for vendors to meet demand, while falling desire will lower shipments of higher-priced models.

Shipments in Q1 dropped 28.3 per cent year-on-year to 2.3 million units. In addition to supply challenges for low-end Android LTE models, IDC attributed the drop to rising costs in the country, which lowered consumers’ budget for smartphones.

Samsung was the only vendor in the top five to gain market share, adding 8.3 percentage points to close the quarter with a 33.9 a per cent share. Its shipments fell 5.5 per cent to 784,600 units. Xiaomi’s share was mostly unchanged at 24.5 per cent with shipments falling 29.3 per cent to 563,100.

Oppo climbed one position to third with a 12.9 per cent share, despite shipping 34.7 per cent fewer units, as rival Vivo’s shipments plunged 57.4 per cent and its share fell from 19.5 per cent to 11.7 per cent.

Realme remained fifth with a 7.8 per cent share, with shipments down 20.6 per cent.

Analyst smartphone shipment estimates for Q1 showed the continued impact of component shortages and logistics problems, with falling demand contributing to a third consecutive quarter of annual declines.

Preliminary data from IDC showed an 8.9 per cent year-on-year drop to 314.1 million units, which it stated was about 3.5 per cent lower than it forecast in February.

Strategy Analytics reported an 11 per cent decline, also to 314 million units, which matches earlier estimates from Canalys.

Preliminary figures from Omdia indicated shipments fell 12.9 per cent to 308 million.

All cited supply problems as hampering shipments. However, Nabila Popal, research director at IDC, suggested “things seemed to have taken a turn for the worse” as concerns around inflation and economic instability adversely affected consumer spending.

Coupled with the rising costs of components and transportation, recent lockdowns in Shanghai and Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, “most OEMs are adopting a more conservative growth strategy for 2022”, Popal added.

Linda Sui, senior director at Strategy Analytics, also noted those factors “continued to weaken consumers’ demand on smartphones and other non-essential products”.

Omdia highlighted a sharp decline in shipments by Chinese manufacturers due to the slowdown in their domestic market.

The analyst companies all agreed Samsung remained the number one smartphone supplier, pegging the South Korean vendor’s market share at around 24 per cent.

Apple ranked in second place with around 18 per cent, followed by Xiaomi, Oppo and Vivo.

Woody Oh, director at Strategy Analytics, remarked this was Samsung’s “highest first-quarter performance by market share since 2017” owing to demand for the newly-launched flagship Galaxy S22 series.
