Nvidia unveiled a new generation of open models and data libraries, designed for building efficient, transparent and specialised agentic AI systems across industries.

The Nemotron 3 family of models consist of three sizes: Nano, Super and Ultra. Nvidia claims they use a hybrid mixture-of-experts (MoE) design, enabling high throughput and scalability across multi-agent systems.

The models are optimised for low inference costs and high performance, making them ideal for tasks like software debugging, content summarisation, AI assistant workflows and information retrieval.

The company stated the launch of the Nemotron 3 models address the aggressive acceleration of industry adoption of agentic AI applications which require reasoning and tool orchestration.

Nvidia stated organisations are shifting away from single model chatbots to collaborative multi-agent AI systems.

Launching today (15 December), Nvidia explained Nano delivers four times higher throughput than its predecessor and excels in multi-agent tasks with a 1-million-token context window.

The Super model combines 100 billion parameters with 10 billion active parameters. It is designed to provide mid-range intelligence for multi-agent applications.

Finally, Ultra, a large reasoning engine with 500 billion parameters with 50 billion active parameters, delivers more powerful advanced reasoning for complex workflows.

The Super and Ultra models are expected to be available in the first half of 2026

Early adopters include Accenture, Deloitte, EY, Oracle, Palantir, Perplexity, ServiceNow, Siemens, Synopsys, and Zoom. Those companies are using the Nemotron models for AI workflows in manufacturing, cybersecurity, software, media, and communications.

Reuters reported the new family also positions Nvidia to better compete against a growing number of open-source models from companies such as DeepSeek, Alibaba and Moonshot AI.

Meta Platforms has been a big proponent of open source through its Llama large language models (LLMs) but Bloomberg reported it is mulling a shift to towards closed-source models.

Demand from companies in China led to Nvidia considering increasing capacity for its H200 AI chip, Reuters reported, days after US President Donald Trump announced the GPU would be cleared for export to approved companies in the country.

Citing a pair of unnamed sources, the news website stated requests for the processor exceeded Nvidia’s current output level, leading to it evaluate its options.

Alibaba and TikTok-parent ByteDance are apparently among those keen to place large orders for the units.

In a report published late yesterday (11 December), South China Morning Post highlighted authorities in China were yet to approve the purchase of the chips by domestic companies.

Earlier this week, President Trump revealed Nvidia would be allowed to export to approved companies in China, reversing an earlier ban. Under the new arrangement, sales of the units to the country would be subject to a 25 per cent levy by US authorities.

In a social media post, he noted Chinese President Xi Jinping responded positively to the move.

However, Financial Times reported access to the chips were likely to be limited by authorities in Beijing as China pushes companies to use domestic alternatives.

The Friday File: Mobile World Live brings you our top three picks of the week as Paramount challenged Netflix’s bid for Warner Bros. Discovery (WBD), young Australians turned to alternatives as a social media ban was enforced and Nvidia secured approval to resume sales of its H200 AI chip in China.

Paramount launches $108B WBD bid to rival Netflix

What happened: Paramount Skydance launched a hostile $108.4 billion bid to acquire the entirety of WBD, including its Global Networks segment and traditional TV assets, days after Netflix agreed an $82.7 billion deal for parts of the company.

Why it matters: In a statement, Paramount described its proposal as a “superior alternative” to Netflix’s transaction, arguing it delivers $18 billion more in cash and avoids “inferior and uncertain value”. It also warned Netflix’s deal could face a “protracted multi-jurisdictional regulatory clearance process”. Dave Ellison, chairman and CEO, added Paramount provides a “more certain and quicker path to completion”. The bidding war for WBD intensifies regulatory scrutiny around competitiveness and consolidation in streaming. US President Donald Trump stated the Netflix, WBD tie up “could be a problem” given Netflix’s hefty market share, while US Senator Mike Lee cautioned the deal would “raise serious competition questions”. Roger Entner, founder and analyst at Recon Analytics, told MWL a combined group would become the “dominant gateway for both production and distribution of premium filmed entertainment”, with “spillover effects on adjoining markets”.

Australians seek alternatives as social media ban takes hold

What happened: Australia’s ban on under-16s using major social media platforms came into force this week, prompting a surge in alternative app downloads as younger users sought ways around the new rules.

Why it matters: Demand for VPN services also spiked, with Top10VPN reporting a 103 per cent rise compared with the previous 28-day average. Under the law, platforms including TikTok, Instagram and Facebook must block underage accounts or face penalties of up to AUD49.5 million ($33 million). Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese argued the move is a “profound reform” aimed at “pushing back against big tech”, framing the legislation as a response to families affected by serious online harms. He added “the world is watching and following”, stating that the move will “continue to reverberate around the world in coming months”. Although some social media platforms have complied, Reddit filed a free speech lawsuit against the country. Researchers have also warned of potential risks; Professor Jessica Ringrose of University College London argued an outright ban is “problematic” because it “neglects young people’s rights and voice” and may erode trust, making children “less able to access support”. She said stronger media-literacy policies, supported jointly by schools and parents, are better suited to addressing fast-moving issues such as AI, privacy and consent.

Nvidia H200 China chip sales cleared

What happened: In a regulatory U-turn, the US government cleared Nvidia to resume exports of its H200 AI chips to approved customers in China, imposing a 25 per cent levy and vetting by the Department of Commerce to ensure national security.

Why it matters: The decision reverses earlier restrictions on advanced AI chips and follows a recent easing in US-China tech tensions. President Donald Trump announced the move on Truth Social, stating the US would permit sales under conditions ensuring “continued strong national security”. The approval excludes Nvidia’s latest Blackwell and Rubin lines, but also covers products from AMD and Intel. The H200 offers significantly more memory bandwidth than Nvidia’s previously permitted H20, giving Chinese buyers access to faster AI processing while remaining below top-tier US hardware. Indeed, the shift creates a major commercial opening for Nvidia, which had removed China-related H200 revenue from recent financial outlooks. The Wall Street Journal estimated Nvidia could stand to gain up to $5 billion in quarterly orders without geopolitical restrictions. The clearance may also slow Chinese adoption of domestic alternatives from vendors such as Huawei. However, some critics argue the policy risks accelerating China’s progress toward advanced AI systems. According to Reuters, US senator Elizabeth Warren warned the decision “risks turbocharging China’s bid for technological and military dominance and undermining US economic and national security”. This week, Nvidia also rebuffed media reports claiming Chinese AI start-up DeepSeek had used banned Blackwell chips to train its latest model.

The US government gave Nvidia a green light to export its H200 AI chips to approved customers in China for a 25 per cent levy, reversing previous restrictions on advanced chips and ignoring strong opposition the move compromises national security.

In a post on Truth Social, President Donald Trump said the US would allow the sale of the chips to China and other countries under conditions which allow for “continued strong national security”.

President Trump added Chinese President Xi Jinping responded positively to the move.

The policy does not include Nvidia’s advanced Blackwell and Rubin chips, but also covers AMD, Intel and other US chipmakers.

It requires checks by the Department of Commerce to ensure national security.

The move could keep China-based companies more reliant on US technology standards instead of using domestic AI chips from vendors including Huawei.

Opening sales of its more advanced chip creates huge upside for Nvidia, which excluded sales of its H20 chips to China in recent financial outlooks.

The H200 chip offers significantly more memory bandwidth than the H20, enabling faster data processing for AI applications. However, it is less capable than Nvidia’s flagship Blackwell chips.

Nvidia reconfigured the H200 for China following US export controls on AI chips introduced in October 2023 during President Joe Biden’s term.

The decision by President Trump is similar to deals Nvidia and AMD reached with the US government in August to restart sales of H20 chips to China.

In September, a regulator in China reportedly ordered domestic technology companies to stop buying Nvidia AI chips to support local alternatives.

Reuters reported the prospective compromise follows a recent truce in the US-China trade and tech war, brokered by President Trump and President Xi.

The news agency also reported US senator Elizabeth Warren opposes selling the H200 chips to China.

On 3 December, Warner criticised Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang for lobbying President Trump to approve the sale of advanced AI chips to China.

“This risks turbocharging China’s bid for technological and military dominance and undermining US economic and national security,” Reuters reported the senator as saying.

Nvidia CFO Colette Kress stated at an industry conference the company’s plan to invest up to $100 billion in OpenAI has yet to be completed, but noted the parties were still working on a definitive agreement.

The partnership, announced in September, was designed to enable OpenAI to progressively build and deploy at least 10 gigawatts of AI data centres using Nvidia systems representing millions of GPUs.

“We still haven’t completed a definitive agreement, but we’re working with them,” Kress stated at yesterday’s (2 December) UBS Global Technology and AI Conference. “We believe we’ll continue working with OpenAI.”

She noted Nvidia has been a preferred partner for OpenAI for more than a decade.

Kress said on the company’s Q3 earnings call in November her company sees a $500 billion revenue opportunity for its advanced chips by end-2026.

“That half a trillion doesn’t include any of the work that we’re doing right now on the next part of the agreement with OpenAI,” she stated at the conference.

Kress also indicated she does not see a so-called AI investment bubble bursting anytime soon, highlighting Nvidia envisions $3 trillion to $4 trillion in global AI investments by the end of the decade.

“What we see is two to three different major transitions happening in the market,” she explained.

Kress said the economy is “in the early parts” of transitioning to the data centre infrastructure needed to power AI.

“There is also that transition that is going to be necessary for AI including what you need for accelerated computing and focusing on AI and agentic AI,” she said. “But keep in mind that it is only one part of what we see today and we’re going to see that continue to grow through the rest of the decade as well.”

Nvidia bought $2 billion in common stock of design software maker Synopsys as part of a multi-year strategic partnership to accelerate AI and compute capabilities.

Nvidia stated it purchased Synopsys’ stock at $414.79 per share to address increasing workflow complexity, rising development costs and time-to-market pressures.

US-based Synopsys will tap into Nvidia’s CUDA-X libraries and AI physics technologies to further accelerate and optimise its applications, including chip design, molecular simulations and optical simulation.

Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang stated CUDA GPU-accelerated computing is revolutionising design while enabling unprecedented simulation speed and scale to create digital twins inside of computers to help engineers invent future products.

The companies are integrating Synopsys AgentEngineer technology with the chipmaker’s agentic AI stack to enable autonomous design capabilities for electronic design automation and simulation workflows.

They will also develop joint marketing and sales efforts to drive adoption across industries,

They stated the partnership is not exclusive, as both companies will continue collaborating with the broader semiconductor and electronic design automation ecosystem to foster shared growth opportunities.

Analyst viewpoint
Appledore founder and principal analyst Patrick Kelly posted on LinkedIn the partnership is the latest example of how Nvidia is using its balance sheet to shape the market in ways that guarantee demand for its hardware.

He noted Nvidia’s deals and investments over the past 12 months, including Nokia, OpenAI and Intel, are clear examples of how it is underwriting the AI boom which it depends on.

“Call it strategic ecosystem development,” he stated. “Call it vendor financing 2.0. Either way, Nvidia isn’t waiting for the market to evolve. It’s designing the market it wants.”

HPE expanded a partnership with Nvidia to launch an AI factory laboratory in Grenoble, France, a move aimed at addressing growing customer needs for more control and autonomy over infrastructure and data.

Announced during HPE’s Discover Barcelona event, the company stated the facility would allow customers to test and refine workloads in a sovereign, AI-cooled factory environment. The laboratory is equipped with Nvidia’s AI enterprise government-ready software, along with HPE servers and routers.

The environment will essentially give customers the ability to validate performance on infrastructure located and running in the European Union, “designed to support scaled AI for the region”, as well as address data sovereignty and regulatory compliance needs of global enterprises operating in the bloc.

Launching the laboratory in France is part of a wider expansion of HPE’s partnership with Nvidia, with the pair stating they would introduce new solutions for secure and scalable AI factories, and new AI data centre interconnect to optimise related workload performance across clusters operating over long distances or within multiple clouds.

Sovereign AI template
The laboratory in Grenoble will be available from Q2 2026. HPE also expanded its Private Cloud AI offering to address data and operational sovereignty, introducing new configurations and use cases.

Antonio Neri, president and CEO of HPE, said it and Nvidia provide the foundation for secure AI factories at any scale, showcasing strengths to deliver “full stack” infrastructures.

Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang added “every nation and enterprise needs to own the production of its intelligence”, explaining the partnership is “creating the template for sovereign AI”.

“The new AI factory lab provides a foundry where customers can turn data into value, securely and at scale,” he added.

Nvidia forecast revenue growth in the current quarter to maintain the swift pace of fiscal Q3 (ended 26 October), as demand for its AI chips continues to increase.

The chipmaker expects its Q4 sales to jump 65 per cent year-on-year to $65 billion.

CEO Jensen Huang said Blackwell sales “are off the charts, and cloud GPUs are sold out”.

CFO Colette Kress noted in its earnings call the Q3 results position it towards “a $500 billion opportunity for Blackwell and Rubin platforms” to end-2026, with aggregate demand likely to increase.

“There’s definitely an opportunity for us to have more on top of the $500 billion that we announced.”

She added “sizable purchase orders never materialised” in the quarter due to geopolitical issues and the increasingly competitive market in China.

Net profit in Q3 jumped 65 per cent to $31.9 billion, while revenue grew 62 per cent to $57 billion.

Data centre sales increased 66 per cent to $51.2 billion, driven by what it called three platform shifts: accelerated computing, powerful AI models and agentic applications.

Founder of industry blog Radio Free Mobile Richard Windsor noted the company continues to have more demand than it knows what to do with, meaning revenue is mostly driven by how much capacity it has reserved at Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company.

He added this is how Nvidia has managed to “shrug off the impact of China going to zero with barely a ripple” to its financial performance.

Kress noted Blackwell Ultra is its leading architecture across all customer categories, while the previous generation saw continued strong demand. Sales of H20 chips, designed for China, were insignificant in Q3, she added.

Gaming revenue increased 30 per cent to $4.3 billion.

R&D expenses for the first nine months grew 41 per cent to $13 billion.

LIVE FROM UNWRAPPED: THE 5G EVOLUTION: Soma Velayutham, VP AI and Telecoms at Nvidia, argued there is a huge misconception around the price of its GPUs and a gross misunderstanding of the AI powerhouse’s platform, as he opened the door to striking similar vendor deals following its recent €1 billion tie-up with Nokia.

Speaking to Mobile World Live on the opening day of Unwrapped, Velayutham hit back at suggestions operators were not convinced by the economics of introducing GPUs at cell sites, stating it was actually the “best price performing platform” available.

“You get a much better return on investment in GPU,” he said.

He explained most people associate Nvidia with large data centre investment, pointing to companies like OpenAI, Microsoft and AWS buying up its Grace Blackwell platform for this very purpose.

However, he added: “They actually may not know GPUs exist in robots, in cameras, in laptops. We have GPUs that scale all the way down to 3 watts… and can scale all the way up to 1,000 watts in a data centre.”

By utilising Nvidia’s application platform Cuda, Velayutham explained a company like Nokia could now essentially write its software on a 3 watt GPU or a 3,000 watt GPU “or anything in between”.

“It’s a myth that Nvidia GPUS are expensive or power hungry. It’s actually a gross misunderstanding of our platform.”

AI-RAN, 6G
Staying with Nokia, Velayutham backed his CEO Jensen Huang’s claims that the deal would ignite the AI-RAN revolution, while pointing to wider momentum around this area with the AI-RAN Alliance.

He said the company was looking forward to working with Nokia to “deliver mass adoption of AI-RAN”, and while the Finnish vendor was the first to lead the way, the path was clear for other similar partnerships. “We would love to have all vendors – Ericsson, Samsung, Fujitsu, NEC – all of them adopt our platform.”

In terms of an AI-RAN roadmap, the Nvidia executive said there were multiple approaches at play around infrastructure as well as adoption in niche markets like enterprise, defence and the public sector.

For MNOs, he believes live trials will be conducted in the field by the end of 2026, before mass adoption towards the end of 2027.

Velayutham also touched on the impact of AI RAN on future 6G networks, backing up comments made by operator Orange among others that the next-generation will be more akin to a software upgrade rather than a complete overhaul.

“Moving from 5G to 6G is going to be a continuum. Its going to be a software journey not a hardware journey,” he concluded.

The Friday File: Mobile World Live brings you our top three picks of the week as Apple nears a $1 billion Google AI tie-up to boost Siri, Deutsche Telekom teamed with Nvidia on a Munich-based AI data hub and Orange took full ownership of MasOrange in a €4.2 billion deal.

Apple nears $1B Google AI deal to power revamped Siri

What happened: Apple is reportedly close to finalising a $1 billion annual deal with Google to license its Gemini AI model for the next-generation of Siri.

Why it matters: The partnership would see Apple tap Google’s 1.2 trillion parameter system to power smarter features like summarisation and task planning, marking an upgrade from Apple’s current 150 billion parameter model. After reportedly testing OpenAI’s ChatGPT and Anthropic’s Claude, Apple chose Gemini as an interim fix while it builds its own 1 trillion parameter AI model. Max Zhang, CEO at IT and intelligence consultancy CTOL Digital Solutions, noted the deal marks a “shift in the tech landscape” as, “for the first time, Apple acknowledges it can’t navigate the AI race solo”. Apple plans to host Gemini on its Private Cloud Compute servers, walled off from Google to maintain user privacy. As Siri struggles with outdated tech, this partnership offers a lifeline while maintaining its fierce privacy ethos,” Zhang noted. However, he cautioned that while the collaboration provides Siri with a short term AI boost, “it also raises questions about dependency on Google for key technology”.

Deutsche Telekom, Nvidia team on €1B AI data hub

What happened: Deutsche Telekom and Nvidia teamed up on a €1 billion AI data centre in Munich, housing 10,000 Nvidia Blackwell GPUs to create one of Europe’s largest industrial AI clouds.

Why it matters: According to the pair, the facility will boost Germany’s AI capacity by 50 per cent in support of the country’s Made 4 Germany digitalisation initiative. With operations expected to begin in Q1 2026, Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang said the facility will “supercharge” Germany’s industrial base. Software player SAP will integrate its business platform into the cloud, linking AI models to industrial data to accelerate automation and smart manufacturing. Early partners also include Siemens, Perplexity, Agile Robots and Quantum Systems. Larbi Belkhit, ABI Research analyst, said the deal “marks a significant moment in Europe’s push toward AI sovereignty” as regional players invest in their own infrastructure instead of relying on hyperscalers. For DT, he said it “underscores its strategic repositioning to move into the GPU-as-a-service market via this AI factory,” while commercial success hinges on industrial uptake. According to Belkhit, “the real question now is what partnerships will telcos form when going to market, and at what layers of the stack?”

Orange reaches €4.2B deal for the rest of MasOrange

What happened: Orange struck a €4.2 billion deal to acquire the remaining 50 per cent stake it doesn’t own in Spanish operator MasOrange from private equity consortium Lorca.

Why it matters: The non-binding agreement strengthens Orange’s position in the group’s second-largest market in Europe, with the operator adding the deal “confirms its long-term industrial commitment in Spain”. A binding agreement is expected to be signed by the end of 2025, with completion of the transaction targeted for the first half of 2026 subject to regulatory clearance.. The buyout comes after Orange Spain and Masmovil merged in 2022 to create MasOrange, Spain’s largest mobile operator by connections. With over 25.8 million mobile lines, the operator leads rivals Telefonica’s Movistar and Vodafone Spain. In October.

The Donald Trump administration reportedly advised government agencies to block the sale of Nvidia’s newly reconfigured AI accelerator for data centres to the Chinese market.

The Information reported federal agencies were told not to issue export licences for the company’s scaled-down version of its advanced Blackwell chip, designed to avoid US export controls.

Nvidia reportedly sent samples of its B30A chip to some customers in China for testing.

The latest restrictions on Nvidia’s AI chips for China are not expected to have a material impact on the chipmaker’s revenue growth. The company earlier told analysts not to include any China sales of its data centre AI chips in their financial forecasts.

In late August, Nvidia forecast Q3 revenue to grow by more than 50 per cent year-on-year, despite its outlook not including any sales of its H20 chips.

Founder of industry blog Radio Free Mobile Richard Windsor said at the time he doesn’t think losing the Chinese market will do Nvidia “any meaningful harm”, because what it loses in China it will make up elsewhere.

Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang, who is meeting with Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co executives today (7 November), said the company isn’t holding discussions with companies in China about selling its Blackwell AI chips, Bloomberg reported.

Nvidia first reconfigured its high-end AI chip for the China market following US export controls on AI chips introduced in October 2023. The US later blocked sales of the H20, before Nvidia reached an agreement with the government in August to restart shipments to China.

Meanwhile, the Cyberspace Administration of China advised domestic companies in September not to purchase Nvidia’s China-specific GPU.

Nvidia has thrown its weight behind India’s Deep Tech Alliance, joining a new wave of investors backing the country’s next generation of AI and semiconductor startups as the group locks in more than $850 million in new capital commitments.

As a founding member and strategic advisor, Nvidia will provide technical expertise, training and policy guidance to help startups tap into its AI and computing platforms. The chipmaker will also provide access to its Deep Learning Institute (DLI) programmes and support collaborative research initiatives as it continues to strengthen its presence in one of the world’s fastest-growing tech markets.

Vishal Dhupar, MD for South Asia at Nvidia, said the company would focus on “providing strategic guidance on AI systems, developer enablement and responsible deployment,” while collaborating with “policymakers, investors and entrepreneurs to help advance transformative solutions”.

Launched in September with a $1 billion initial pledge, the alliance aims to boost funding for India’s deep-tech ecosystem and support ventures in AI, space, robotics and chip design.

New backers include Qualcomm Ventures, Activate AI and InfoEdge Ventures, Chirate Ventures and Kalaari Capital alongside founding investors such as Accel, Blume Ventures, Gaja Capital, Premji Invest and Celesta Capital.

Sriram Viswanathan, founding managing partner at Celesta Capital told Reuters: “There’s no better time for India to look at deep tech,” adding that alliance members will commit their own capital over the next decade, alongside mentoring and ecosystem support. “There’s no real pooling of capital. It’s voluntary.”

In July, the Indian government launched a $12 billion R&D initiative aimed at boosting advanced manufacturing and innovation across the nation. Indeed, industry association Nasscom found that deep-tech investment in the South Asian country jumped 78 per cent from 2023 to $1.6 billion last year.

Nvidia and Deutsche Telekom unveiled plans for a €1 billion data centre project in Germany to strengthen the country’s digital sovereignty and power Europe’s industrial AI ambitions.

The AI facility will mark one of Europe’s largest, deploying up to 10,000 Nvidia Blackwell GPUs to create what the partners call an “industrial AI cloud.” Set to begin operations in the first quarter of 2026, the Munich-based facility will boost Germany’s AI computing power by around 50 per cent, according to Deutsche Telekom.

SAP, Europe’s largest software company, will integrate its business technology platform and applications into the new cloud infrastructure, which will be housed in an existing Deutsche Telekom facility. The focus will be on linking AI models to industrial data sources to accelerate the adoption of automation and intelligent manufacturing.

Siemens, Perplexity, Agile Robots and Quantum Systems are among the initial ten partners building out the ecosystem.

Supercharge Germany
Nvidia chief Jensen Huang said the initiative will “supercharge” Germany’s industrial base. “With the world’s first Industrial AI Cloud and one of Germany’s largest GPU deployments, we’re bringing Nvidia AI and robotics to start a new era of Germany’s industrial transformation,” he said.

Federal digitalisation minister Karsten Wildberger hailed the deal as “crucial to making Germany a leading AI country”.

The Industrial AI Cloud marks one of the first flagship projects under the country’s Made 4 Germany initiative, which brings together more than 100 companies to boost the country’s appeal as a business hub while accelerating digitalisation.

The project also aligns with the European Union’s (EU) broader €200 billion InvestAI plan to triple the bloc’s AI capacity within the next decade.

While the €1 billion investment marks a major milestone for Europe, it remains modest compared to US projects from Microsoft, Google and OpenAI, which are spending hundreds of billions to scale AI infrastructure.

Last week, Nvidia struck a deal for the same amount with Nokia to build AI-native RAN systems for 5G-Advanced and 6G, with Huang stating the partnership would help the US “regain global leadership” in telecoms infrastructure.

The Friday File: Mobile World Live brings you our top three picks of the week as Nvidia backed Nokia to the tune of $1 billion, VMO2 teamed with Starlink for direct-to-device (D2D) connectivity in the UK, and Amazon unveiled plans to slash thousands of jobs.

Nvidia invests $1B in Nokia AI-RAN push

What happened: Nvidia lined-up a $1 billion investment in Nokia, which will amount to a 2.9 per cent stake, as the pair announced a collaboration on AI-native RAN systems for 5G-Advanced and future 6G infrastructure.

Why it matters: The cash injection will be partly used to fund the development of Nokia’s 5G and 6G RAN software for Nvidia’s architecture.

On the partnership element, Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang said the pair aim to create “intelligent, adaptive networks”, enabling operators to shift from 5G-A to 6G through software upgrades. With field trials slated for 2026, Huang framed the deal as part of US efforts to “regain global leadership” in telecom infrastructure.

Nvidia’s billion-dollar move gives Nokia fresh AI firepower; Alejandro Ramirez, lecturer at Erasmus University noted the move signals “a strategic rebirth” for Nokia, once seen as the “tech giant that missed the smartphone wave.”

ABI Research analyst Larbi Belkhit said Nvidia will gain “a credible and established channel into the telco network”, warning the tie-up will challenge rivals, posing the question: “who should other infrastructure vendors be more concerned about moving forward – Nokia or Nvidia?”

VMO2 brings Starlink D2D to UK

What happened: Virgin Media O2 (VMO2) struck a deal with SpaceX-owned Starlink to launch the UK’s first D2D satellite service aimed at expanding mobile connectivity across rural areas.

Why it matters: Analysts at Assembly Research hailed the tie-up as “a first-of-its-kind partnership for the UK market” and “an important milestone in [regulator] Ofcom’s push” to enable D2D in bands below 3GHz.

The analyst house positioned satellite as “an important part of the connectivity puzzle and a pragmatic, complementary way to improve coverage,” rather than a direct threat to mobile operators. Still, VMO2 will need to amend its licences and “prevent the risk of interference with other spectrum users” before the service rolls out.

Amazon delivers corporate jobs blow

What happened: Amazon unveiled plans to cut 14,000 corporate jobs as part of a sweeping effort to streamline operations in the AI era.

Why it matters: In a memo to staff, SVP people experience and technology Beth Galetti said the move aims to cut bureaucracy and refocus resources on Amazon’s “biggest bets.”

The executive did not specify which teams or regions would be impacted but noted the company intends to operate “more leanly, with fewer layers and more ownership”. eMarketer analyst Sky Canaves told Reuters the move “signals that Amazon is likely realising enough AI-driven productivity gains within corporate teams to support a substantial reduction in force”.

Samsung Electronics unveiled plans to expand a long-term partnership with Nvidia, with the aim to build a so-called AI factory using more than 50,000 GPUs from the US-based company across its entire production system to speed the development and production of next-generation chips and mobile devices.

In a statement, the South Korean company explained the facility would integrate “every aspect of semiconductor manufacturing, from design and process to equipment, operations and quality control, into a single intelligent network”.

Samsung stated the move is part of a company-wide digital transformation using AI-enabled manufacturing.

The factory will combine the companies’ respective chip expertise to set “the foundation of next-generation, AI-driven production”, Nvidia stated separately.

Nvidia founder and CEO Jensen Huang said: “We are at the dawn of the AI industrial revolution, a new era that will redefine how the world designs, builds and manufactures.”

Samsung executive chair Jay Y. Lee said the arrangement continues its “longstanding journey with Nvidia in leading this transformation”, predicting the pair would create “new standards for the future” and accelerate “breakthroughs”.

Nvidia detailed two other AI factory deals with SK Group and Hyundai Motors, both of which also involve 50,000 GPUs.

The first phase of the SK Group build, which will serve subsidiaries SK Hynix and SK Telecom (SKT), is planned for completion by late 2027.

SKT plans to build an industrial AI cloud with Nvidia’s RTX Pro 6000 Blackwell server GPUs in Asia.

Nvidia lined up a $1 billion investment in Nokia as the pair teamed on AI-native infrastructure moves incorporating the US chip company’s related technology with the vendor’s RAN portfolio for 5G-Advanced (5G-A) and future 6G infrastructure.

The investment is to be made through the issuance of fresh Nokia shares and will result in Nvidia holding a 2.9 per cent stake in the vendor once customary closing conditions are met.

Nokia stated it intends to use the proceeds to speed development of its 5G and 6G RAN software for Nvidia architecture, along with their broader AI infrastructure arrangement.

The AI-native infrastructure collaboration could also be extended to cover Nokia’s data centre switching and optical technologies.

Nokia and Nvidia separately stated the AI-RAN work would act as a foundation for distributed edge inferencing along with fresh services for consumers and enterprises.

Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang believes the developments will contribute to US efforts to “regain global leadership” in telecoms infrastructure by making it a frontrunner in AI-RAN.

The companies are working with T-Mobile US and Dell Technologies on developments involving the infrastructure.

Huang said Nvidia and Nokia are “igniting” an AI-RAN revolution, “equipping operators to build intelligent, adaptive networks that will define the next generation of global connectivity”.

Nokia CEO Justin Hotard said the tie-up is necessary because the “next leap in telecom isn’t just from 5G to 6G: it’s a fundamental redesign of the network” involving AI connectivity which can process “intelligence from the data centre all the way to the edge”.

Nvidia and Nokia predict AI-RAN will provide a bump in mobile network performance and efficiency required by current and future iterations of the technology.

They stated almost half of the 800 million weekly active users of ChatGPT access it on mobile devices.

Nvidia aims to ease the transition from 5G-A to 6G through Aerial RAN Computer Pro (ARC-Pro), an accelerated computing platform enabling operators to switch using software updates. It is making a reference design available to encourage broad backing by other manufacturers and network equipment vendors.

Nokia plans to include ARC-Pro in a new AI-RAN product it stated would ease the transition from traditional radio infrastructure.

Partners
The Finnish vendor’s ambition is in part being advanced by Dell Technologies’ PowerEdge servers, which provide no-touch software upgrades and only minimal intervention on the silicon side.

T-Mobile’s involvement builds on an existing collaboration with Nvidia on AI-native infrastructure. The operator plans to test the technologies developed by the chip company and Nokia, with a target of commencing field trials covering performance and efficiency gains in 2026.

John Saw, president of technology and CTO at T-Mobile, said Nokia’s involvement with the pair is “an important step towards shaping the future of connectivity”, in particular preparations for 6G.

UK-based AI start-up Nscale expanded a deal with Microsoft to supply the technology giant with 200,000 Nvidia GPUs, scaling up infrastructure across Europe and the US in what it stated is one of the largest AI contracts signed to date.

Nscale stated it would collaborate with Dell Technologies and the GPUs would be delivered through its owned operations and a joint venture with Norway-based Aker.

As part of the deal, Nscale is due to deliver Nvidia GB300 GPUs to Microsoft’s AI campus in Texas over the next 12 months to 18 months.

From Q1 2026, it is also to deliver the same GPUs for Microsoft at the Start Campus data centre in Portugal.

The latest agreement builds on a tie-up between Nscale and Microsoft to build the UK’s largest Nvidia AI supercomputer and a $6.2 billion multi-year agreement to supply Microsoft with Nvidia GPUs from an AI campus in Norway, in collaboration with Aker.

Josh Payne, founder and CEO of Nscale, said the agreement confirms its position as a partner of choice for the world’s biggest companies.

“Few companies are equipped to deliver GPU deployments at this scale, but we have the experience and have built the global pipeline to do so.”

$14B revenue
Nscale secured $1.1 billion in funding last month from backers including Nvidia and Nokia, cash earmarked for its global hyperscale ambition.

The company did not reveal financial details of its expanded deal with Microsoft, but Financial Times (FT) reported it could generate $14 billion in revenue for the company.

FT added the deal gives Nscale a further boost to it hopes of launching an IPO in 2026.

The Friday File: Mobile World Live brings you our top three picks of the week as OpenAI landed a $100 billion Nvidia investment, VodafoneThree signed contracts worth £2 billion with Ericsson and Nokia, and Optus was dealt a $66 million penalty.

OpenAI scores $100B investment from Nvidia

What happened: Nvidia unveiled plans to invest up to $100 billion in OpenAI, enabling the ChatGPT-maker to build and deploy at least 10 gigawatts of AI data centres using millions of Nvidia GPUs.

Why it matters: The companies will act as preferred strategic partners, optimising hardware, software and infrastructure, while continuing to team on other projects including Stargate AI. OpenAI, one of Nvidia’s largest customers, runs most of its frontier models on the chipmaker’s GPUs, noted analyst Jack Gold. Speaking to Mobile World Live, he also flagged the lack of detail around cost and timelines of the partnership. Indeed, the scale of the deal has sparked scrutiny over market dynamics and regulatory risk. “The action will clearly fuel ‘circular’ concerns,” Bernstein analyst Stacy Rasgon told Bloomberg, referring to Nvidia’s pattern of investing in AI companies who then buy its GPUs. While she noted that Nvidia insisted the funding won’t be used for direct purchases, the move will “fuel these worries” and “raise concerns over the rationale behind the action”, adding that the OpenAI investment “appears to dwarf all the others”. Antitrust concerns are also being brought to the fore. As Nvidia controls more than half of the GPU market, becoming OpenAI’s preferred partner could lead it to potentially prioritising the ChatGPT-maker over rivals in chip access or pricing, Vanderbilt law professor Rebecca Haw Allensworth told Reuters.

VodafoneThree hands Ericsson, Nokia £2B UK contracts

What happened: VodafoneThree awarded contracts worth more than £2 billion to Ericsson and Nokia to build out the newly merged operator’s UK mobile network.

Why it matters: The eight-year long deals mark one of the UK’s largest privately funded network projects. Ericsson claimed the larger share, winning a £1 billion agreement to supply its core network and radio systems, including standalone 5G hardware. Nokia secured a “significant” slice, modernising parts of VodafoneThree’s voice core and supplying RAN equipment to roughly 7,000 sites, marking its return as a supplier for Vodafone and Three in the UK. Max Taylor, VodafoneThree CEO, said the contracts reflect a commitment to “deliver at pace,” adding that the trio are “laying the foundations for the UK’s digital future”. The deals, which follow VodafoneThree’s blockbuster merger in June, mark a blow to rival Samsung Networks. Despite previous backing from Vodafone Group, the Korean vendor was left out of the latest deal, which forms part of a wider £11 billion infrastructure push. It will instead focus on Vodafone’s upcoming Spring 6 tender covering 15 markets in Europe and Africa. The contracts come at a time when operators have largely held back on costly upgrades, Bloomberg noted. For Ericsson and Nokia, the agreements could offer a critical boost in a sluggish mobile infrastructure market.

Optus fined $66M, endures tough week

What happened: After a critical failure in its emergency call system that led to multiple deaths earlier this week, Optus was hit with a AUD100 million ($66 million) penalty for deceptive sales practices over a four-year period.

Why it matters: Optus CEO Stephen Rue stated a network upgrade caused a failure in its emergency call service after standard procedures were not followed, with no system alerts raised during the outage. Following investigation, an Australian federal court hit Optus with the record penalty over “unconscionable conduct” in selling mobile plans and devices to over 400 vulnerable customers. The case also resulted in a five-year court-enforceable undertaking requiring the operator to compensate customers and overhaul internal systems. “This wasn’t simple incompetence — it was reckless, culpable negligence,” said Phil Watt, CTO of data infrastructure and analytics company DataJPS. This is the third crisis in two years for Australia’s second-largest operator, following a mass outage in November 2023 and a major cyberattack in 2022. Former CEO Kelly Bayer Rosmarin resigned in the wake of last year’s service collapse, while Rue now faces rising pressure to restore trust.

Nvidia teamed up with Abu Dhabi’s Technology Innovation Institute (TII) to launch a combined AI and robotics research lab, as the UAE ramps up efforts to become a global AI leader.

The new lab will combine TII’s applied research in robotics, AI and high-performance computing with Nvidia’s accelerated computing platforms and AI expertise, marking the first Nvidia AI Technology Centre (NVAITC) in the Middle East.

TII, the applied research arm of Abu Dhabi’s Advanced Technology Research Council (ATRC), stated the lab will drive innovation in embodied AI, humanoid stacks and hardware designed for real-time robotic systems. It will also support the development and deployment of large language models, including TII’s Arabic language Falcon series.

According to Reuters, TII CEO Najwa Aaraj confirmed the lab will utilise Nvidia’s latest edge GPU, the Thor chip, to advance next-generation robotics, including humanoids, quadrupeds and robotic arms designed for transport and logistics applications.

Teams from both organisations will reportedly co-locate in Abu Dhabi, with additional hires planned to support the expanded scope of work.

In a statement, Aaraj stated the partnership “marks a major step toward building AI-enhanced robotic systems capable of reasoning, adapting, and acting in complex environments”.

“By combining our advanced robotic platforms with powerful AI models and compute, we are accelerating the convergence of perception, control, and language – laying the foundation for a new era of intelligent machines,” he added.

The news comes after the UAE signed a multibillion-dollar agreement to build one of the world’s largest AI data centre hubs in Abu Dhabi using advanced Nvidia chips earlier this year. However, the deal remains pending amid reported US security concerns over the Gulf state’s ties with China.

Nvidia revealed a plan to invest up to $100 billion in OpenAI to build out its AI infrastructure to train and run the ChatGPT parent’s next generation of models aimed at developing superintelligence.

The partnership will enable OpenAI to progressively build and deploy at least 10 gigawatts of AI data centres using Nvidia systems representing millions of GPUs.

The first gigawatt of Nvidia’s systems will be deployed in the second half of 2026 on the chipmaker’s Vera Rubin platform.

The AI heavyweights stated they will work closely as preferred strategic partners to co-optimise their hardware, software and infrastructure roadmaps while complementing existing collaborations with other major partners to advance AI infrastructure globally.

Analyst Jack Gold told Mobile World Live the partnership is not a big surprise given OpenAI is one of Nvidia’s biggest customers and most of its models run on its GPUs.

The two companies are among a consortium of tech giants who are building AI data centres as part of the Stargate AI project announced earlier this year.

“What’s interesting is that there is no real mention of timeframes and overall costs for the 10GW system,” Gold said. “If I were a sceptic, I might say this is another Stargate project, with a big announcement followed by scant details.”

Gold noted for Nvidia it “is not really such a major investment as it will be selling tens of thousands to millions of GPUs to OpenAI,” but he questioned where the funding for OpenAI’s build out will come from.

“But so far they have been able to get all the funding they’ve needed, even though they make very little revenues compared to the continued massive investments,” he said. “OpenAI must keep building out bigger and better AI data centres for their bigger models, and much of their work is focused on the high-end GPUs that Nvidia makes.

“For Nvidia, making sure they stay top of mind for the massive build out by OpenAI means they get to sell them their GPUs, but it is also good for their marketing.”

Last week Nvidia invested $5 billion in Intel.

The Friday File: Mobile World Live brings you our top three picks of the week as the UK attracted billions in US AI funding, China targeted Nvidia with antitrust action and curbed AI chip imports and SpaceX explored partnerships for its direct-to-device service.

Roundup: UK scores billions in US AI investment

What happened: The UK saw a major AI investment windfall this week as US tech giants including Microsoft, Nvidia, Google and OpenAI made a series of commitments in the lead up to a state visit by US President Donald Trump.

Why it matters: Overall, the UK secured more than £150 billion in new investment this week, out of which AI investments by Google, Nvidia and Microsoft alone were worth £45 billion. Demis Hassabis, CEO of Google DeepMind, celebrated its deal as a launchpad for AI-powered scientific breakthroughs in areas including drug discovery and fusion energy, adding that it combines “the unique strengths of both countries”. In addition, the UK government outlined a broader strategy to attract £30 billion in AI investment, with key sites in Blyth and potentially Cobalt Park, aiming to become some of the largest European data centre hubs. “These record-breaking investments will create thousands of high-quality jobs across the UK — from clean energy to advanced manufacturing,” noted UK business and trade secretary Peter Kyle, adding that they indicate a “vote of confidence” in the country’s economy. However, Meta’s former president of global affairs and the UK’s former deputy PM Nick Clegg dismissed the deals as “sloppy seconds from Silicon Valley”, stating that the UK has become a “vassal state” in global tech, The Guardian reported. “These companies need the data centres anyway,” Clegg noted, arguing that “this US-UK tech deal is just another version of the United Kingdom holding on to Uncle Sam’s coat-tails”.

China targets Nvidia in antitrust probe, AI chip ban

What happened: Nvidia got caught in the crossfire of escalating US-China tech tensions as Chinese authorities launched an investigation into a prior acquisition claiming the company violated anti-monopoly laws. Separately, a regulator banned domestic companies from buying its RTX Pro 6000D AI chips.

Why it matters: China’s State Administration for Market Regulation (SAMR) launched an investigation into Nvidia’s 2020 acquisition of networking product supplier Mellanox Technologies, alleging violations of the country’s anti-monopoly laws. The preliminary ruling came amidst ongoing US-China trade talks in Spain this week, with US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent suggesting the timing could be aimed at gaining leverage over chip export discussions, Reuters reported. The move could also comes as a response to Washington’s recent blacklist of 23 China-based firms. On top of that, China’s Cyberspace Administration reportedly ordered domestic companies, including ByteDance and Alibaba, to stop buying Nvidia’s RTX Pro 6000D AI chips. The ban comes after Nvidia had already adapted its high-end offerings for China to comply with US export controls in 2023 and last month reached a deal with US authorities to resume shipments of its H20 GPU to the country. CEO Jensen Huang told CNBC he was “disappointed with what I see”, adding that “they have larger agendas to work out between China and the United States, and I’m understanding of that”.

SpaceX in talks with chip vendors for D2D service

What happened: At a Paris conference this week, SpaceX COO Gwynne Shotwell reportedly revealed the company is collaborating with partners to embed chips directly into mobile devices to support a Starlink direct-to-device (D2D) service.

Why it matters: The move comes after the Elon-Musk owned satellite venture acquired EchoStar’s AWS-4 spectrum for $17 billion earlier this month, raising eyebrows across the mobile industry over a potential competing D2D service. Typically, satellite operators pursuing this type of service must partner with companies holding ground-based mobile licenses. While SpaceX currently works with T-Mobile US, the EchoStar deal gives the company greater independence to offer its own services. Earlier this month, AT&T CEO John Stankey downplayed the threat of SpaceX’s D2D offering which bypasses operators, citing spectrum and infrastructure limitations, but LightShed Partners analyst Walter Piecyk argued that “SpaceX has the brand power and direct-to-consumer model to press that advantage”. Furthermore, according to Bloomberg, Shotwell stated: “We will be now initiating discussions with telcos in a different way,” adding “now it’s our spectrum, but we want to work with them, almost providing capacity and wholesaling capacity to their customers”. She explained that new satellites supporting the direct-to-device service are expected within the next two years, with mobile phone tests planned for late 2026.

The CEOs of Nvidia and Intel provided deeper insights on the former’s $5 billion investment in the latter during a conference call, including answering numerous questions about Nvidia using Intel’s foundry technology.

Intel CEO Lip-Bu Tan (pictured, left) and Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang (pictured, right) stressed on the call yesterday (18 August) the partnership is firmly focused on the products the two companies will jointly develop.

Analyst Jack Gold noted both companies use TSMC’s fabrication facilities and Intel will need to prove out its 14A process before Nvidia considers using it.

“I think we would both say that TSMC is a world-class foundry,” Huang said. “I just can’t overstate the magic that is TSMC.”

Products
Intel gained access to Nvidia’s NVLink technology to build future superchips together. Nvidia’s proprietary NVLink interconnect is used to connect CPUs and GPUs for the chips.

The companies will also partner on building a new consumer-grade PC chip that fuses GPUs and CPUs.

Huang noted Nvidia gains wide access to a PC market which sells 150 million notebooks a year while pegging the data centre revenue opportunity at $25 billion to $50 billion.

Gold stated in a research note Intel controls 75 per cent to 85 per cent of the AI PC market and said Nvidia has a better chance of being a player in that space through Intel.

Huang and Tan didn’t say when the joint products will be available.

AMD
AMD competes against Intel for supplying chips to data centres and PCs. Gold noted the partnership could have an impact on AMD “although they are doing well with their own AI efforts in GPU and CPU”.

“Still, having two major competitors combining their efforts is not exactly a positive outcome for AMD,” he explained. “And with a slew of startup contenders for AI market share, the collaboration of these two behemoths should be seen as a bigger hurdle to jump through for any real market share.”

A representative for AMD told Mobile World Live (MWL) the company “continues to consistently execute our x86 leadership roadmap, delivering high-performance products that power everything from PCs to data centres”.

“We are confident in our ability to continue driving innovation and market share growth and reinforcing AI as the company’s top strategic priority.”

Trump factor
While Huang accompanied President Donald Trump on his trip to the UK, he said the president had “no involvement in the partnership at all,” but his administration “would have been very supportive”.

The Nvidia CEO said he told US Secretary of Commerce about the partnership while both were in London,” and he was very excited, very supportive of seeing American technology companies working together”.

Huang said Nvidia and Intel started working on the partnership over year ago, which pre-dates Tan taking over as CEO in March. The Intel CEO said he started collaborating with Huang on his first day as CEO.

Top turnaround
After slashing the company’s headcount and hearing Trump call for his resignation, Tan has mounted a dramatic comeback which also includes a 10 per cent equity stake in the company by the US government and a $2 billion capital injection from SoftBank Group.

“This is a game changer deal for Intel as it now brings them front and centre into the AI game,” analyst Dan Ives of Wedbush Securities told MWL. “This has been a golden few weeks for Intel after years of pain and frustration for investors.

“Today’s announcement further strengthens the US lead in the AI Arms Race against China as Intel now goes from a laggard to a catalyst.”

Summing up the news, Gold said the partnership “should be seen as advantageous to both companies, “and not just seen, as some might say, as a bail-out for Intel”.

Nvidia unveiled plans to invest $5 billion into Intel in a partnership that will see the two companies jointly develop customer data centre and PC products, as the AI giant throws its weight behind the struggling US chipmaker.

Nvidia stated it would invest the sum in Intel’s common stock at a purchase price of $23.28 per share, subject to customary closing conditions including regulatory approval.

The sum is higher than the $20.47 price the US government paid for a 10 per cent stake in the company last month, amounting to an investment worth close to $9 billion.

With the investment, Nvidia will take around a 4 per cent stake in Intel, after new shares are issued to complete the deal.

As part of the agreement, Nvidia will work to bring products to market that “accelerate applications and workloads across hyperscale, enterprise and [the] consumer market”.

The pair will focus on seamlessly connecting respective architectures, combining Nvidia’s AI and accelerated computing capabilities with Intel’s CPU and x86 ecosystem.

In the data centre segment, Intel will build custom x86 CPUs, which Nvidia will integrate into its AI infrastructure platforms and offer out to market.

Jensen Huang, CEO of Nvidia, described the partnership as a “historic collaboration” and fusion of two world class platforms. “Together, we will expand our ecosystems and lay the foundation for the next era of computing.”

Intel counterpart Lip Bu Tan added the company was grateful for the “confidence Jensen and the Nvidia team have placed in us with their investment”.

A regulator in China reportedly ordered domestic technology companies to stop buying Nvidia AI chips, amid ongoing tension between the country and the US.

The Financial Times reported the Cyberspace Administration of China told companies, including TikTok parent ByteDance and Alibaba, not to purchase Nvidia’s RTX Pro 6000D which it explained is a chip designed for use there.

Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang told CNBC his company “probably contributed more to the China market than most countries have” during a press conference in London.

“And I’m disappointed with what I see,” Huang said, according to CNBC. “But they have larger agendas to work out between China and the United States, and I’m understanding of that.”

He told the news site Nvidia has guided financial analysts not to include China revenue in financial forecasts.

Nvidia has been in the middle of a tug of war between the administration of US President Donald Trump and the government in China.

Nvidia reconfigured its high-end offerings for China following US export controls on AI chips introduced in October 2023 during President Joe Biden’s administration due to national security concerns. The H20 GPU was the top performing chip prior to export restrictions.

In July the chipmaker received assurances from US authorities it could resume selling the H20 GPU chip.

In August, Chinese authorities warned domestic companies to avoid buying Nvidia’s AI chips. However, Nvidia and AMD reached an agreement with the US government shortly after to restart sales of their AI chips to China.

Earlier this week, China’s State Administration for Market Regulation also found Nvidia violated the country’s anti-monopoly law for its acquisition of Mellanox Technologies in 2020.

AI drove a refreshed special relationship between the UK and US this week after Microsoft, Nvidia, Google and OpenAI confirmed massive investments and commitments to the nation.

The flurry of announcements were anticipated by several news outlets, timed to coincide with a state visit to the UK by US President Donald Trump.

Investments detailed by Google, Nvidia and Microsoft alone totalled £45 billion, while OpenAI intends to house thousands of GPUs in the UK as part of its Stargate initiative.

Add to this a target by the UK government to attract £30 billion of investment by creating an AI growth zone in North-East England and it has been a good week for the nation’s standing in the technology.

Here’s a rundown of the moves announced.

Nvidia
The company is partnering with domestic AI infrastructure company Nscale to deliver up to 60,000 of its Grace Blackwell GPUs to the UK, adding to a global move involving up to 300,000 of the units.

Nvidia and Nscale also plan to invest up to £11 billion in UK AI factories in a deal involving CoreWeave. The US company branded this the largest deployment of relevant infrastructure in the UK’s history, one involving up to 120,000 of its Blackwell GPUs.

The result should be a series of AI factories tailored towards leading models which will boost UK sovereignty and its economy, Nvidia explained. The plan is to have these up and running by the close of 2026.

A person with short gray hair stands on stage wearing a black leather jacket, black shirt, and black pants, looking to the side with hands on hips. The background is dark.

CEO Jensen Huang (pictured, right) said the nation is gearing up for an “AI industrial revolution, advancing science, transforming industries and creating new economic opportunities”.

He branded the nation’s “world-class expertise, outstanding universities and vibrant industries” as a “Goldilocks ecosystem”.

Microsoft
The software giant detailed a $30 billion (£21.9 billion) investment in AI infrastructure and operations running from this year until 2028, noting it is its largest financial commitment to the nation.

Capex is set to account for half the sum, with Microsoft intent on building the biggest supercomputer in the UK. There is a crossover, with this element involving 23,000 Nvidia GPUs and a partnership with Nscale.

Some of the $15 billion is also allocated towards expanding its datacentre footprint. Microsoft noted the UK National Health Service, banking group Barclays and the London Stock Exchange are among its customers.

Microsoft stated the other half of its investment would go towards operational expenses, in particular its 6,000 staff in the UK who are developing AI models, products and games, and running its datacentres, and sales and support services.

The company noted the support of the UK government was key in its ability to commit the massive sum to the nation.

HM Government
The government appeared keen to spread the benefits with its AI Growth Zone plan, which it hopes will unlock more than 5,000 new jobs along with billions in investment.

It stated the goal is to expand on current regional skilling programmes and support a local ambition to become one of Europe’s biggest data centre hubs.

The government noted asset management company Blackstone committed £10 billion to a site in Blyth.

It earmarked Cobalt Park as a second area involved in the North-East England programme.

A man with short brown hair and pale skin wears a dark suit jacket, white shirt, and a headset microphone. He looks forward with a neutral expression in a conference setting, with blurred people and water bottles visible in the background.

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman (pictured, right) noted the region is well served by windfarms, and is plotting solar energy and battery storage moves.

OpenAI
The company backed the UK as the latest market where its Stargate J/V would have a presence, planning to allocate up to 8,000 GPUs in Q1 2026 to run its AI models in the nation.

OpenAI is working with Nvidia and Nscale on the move and noted it builds on a memorandum of understanding struck with the UK government in July involving infrastructure needs and AI adoption.

Nscale’s involvement links OpenAI’s plans with the UK government’s growth move, with capacity for Stargate set to be included in the Cobalt Park site. Nvidia is due to bring its “most advanced GPUs” to the table.

OpenAI looked beyond infrastructure, detailing an ambition to work with domestic business leaders and the government to “design flexible and customisable learning experiences” for AI.

Altman praised the UK for its pioneering approach to AI, “world-class researchers, millions of ChatGPT users and a government that quickly recognised the potential of this technology”.

Google
The search giant is lining up a further £5 billion investment in the UK over the next two years, with a heavy focus on scientific research and its DeepMind efforts.

Google detailed the investment at the opening of a data centre which itself was hailed as a “powerful vote of confidence” in the nation by Chancellor of the Exchequer Rachel Reeves, who opened the facility.

Nvidia played down a call for a US investigation into potential espionage by a Huawei subsidiary which shared facilities at the AI chipmaker’s head office in Santa Clara, California, insisting it ensures its offices and IP are secure, Bloomberg reported.

In a 12-page letter, the US House Select Committee on China stated Futurewei Technologies held the main lease on three buildings at the campus, with Nvidia subletting space before it acquired full control in 2024.

The Committee claimed the co-location provided Futurewei “unprecedented access to America’s most advanced semiconductor and AI capabilities”, and called for the unit to share documents and contracts related to the selection of the site along with explaining any activities involving Nvidia by 28 September.

An Nvidia representative told Bloomberg it always maintains a separate site even when facilities are shared.

Huawei was barred from importing the most advanced chips since US sanctions were imposed in 2019.

Nvidia recently restarted shipping AI chips designed for the Chinese market after it and AMD reached a licensing agreement with the US government.

A preliminary investigation by China’s State Administration for Market Regulation (SAMR) found Nvidia violated the country’s anti-monopoly law, complicating its business operations in China amid ongoing trade talks in Madrid.

A statement by SAMR claimed Nvidia violated the country’s anti-monopoly law related to its acquisition of Mellanox Technologies in 2020. The agency stated it decided to conduct a further investigation into the Mellanox deal in accordance with the law.

Reuters reported US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent stated the timing of SAMR’s finding may also have been an attempt to gain leverage during the trade discussions between the US and China which could include discussions on chip exports.

The news site explained the preliminary ruling also may have been in retaliation for the administration of US President Donald Trump putting 23 China-based companies on a trade blacklist last week.

Due to China’s antitrust law, the news site reported companies can be hit with fines of between 1 per cent and 10 per cent of their annual sales from the year prior.

The chipmaker expects revenue in the current quarter to grow by more than 50 per cent year-on-year to $54 billion despite the ongoing discussions between the two countries.

In August, Chinese authorities warned domestic companies to avoid buying Nvidia’s AI chips.

Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang made multiple visits to China this year to maintain market relations despite restrictions on advanced chip sales and has also met with Trump several times.

Last month, Nvidia and AMD reached an agreement with the US government to restart sales of their AI chips to China.
