iBasis reached a deal to acquire Telstra International’s wholesale voice, mobile and messaging customer contracts, expanding its reach in the Asia Pacific region.
In a joint statement, Telstra International CEO Roary Stasko explained the long-term asset sale and purchase agreement offers an opportunity to “strengthen our ability to compete globally, while ensuring continuity and quality for our international voice customers”.
He added it is confident iBasis can deliver “seamless continuity” for its wholesale and retail customers.
The deal, subject to regulatory approvals, will give iBasis a presence in Australia and New Zealand, adding to its operations in Hong Kong and Singapore in Asia.

The agreement covers the transfer of customer contracts and an international team of commercial and operational professionals.
iBasis also will secure exclusive rights for international wholesale voice services for Digicel Pacific, part of the Telstra International’s portfolio. This covers Papua New Guinea, Fiji, Samoa, Tonga, Vanuatu, and Nauru.
iBasis CEO Patrick George said the deal accelerates its “growth trajectory” and strengthens its position as a global wholesale player.
