Deutsche Telekom offered a first glimpse at a technology developed to open TETRA networks to all mission-critical services organisations, providing connectivity regardless of the technology they use.

The operator demonstrated the expansion to its T Mission portfolio by using a smartphone to communicate in a 5G network using a TETRA radio.

Deutsche Telekom explained the test used Motorola Solutions’ latest mission-critical technology and proved this could interact with TETRA set-ups.

This means German public safety organisations can continue using existing radio infrastructure in mission-critical services, with the combined network approach boosting coverage and resilience.

An enhanced T Mission video function was also demonstrated. It enables control centres to transmit up to ten different streams to defined groups and Deutsche Telekom pointed to drone, security and body camera footage as examples.

The operator also showcased a GUI for sensor data developed in conjunction with electronics manufacturer and distributor ATS Elektronik which enables real time monitoring of data including pulse rate and body temperature.

Deutsche Telekom stated this is being used by firefighters, though emphasised its potential for other emergency services personnel.

The demonstrations took place during specialist trade show PMR Expo in Cologne last week, though Deutsche Telekom only publicised the developments today (2 December).

Deutsche Telekom and retail conglomerate Schwarz Group are in advanced talks over joining forces on a bid to build European Union-funded AI data centre infrastructure in Germany, newspaper Handelsblatt reported.

The newspaper asserted multiple sources flagged the discussions on the so-called AI Gigafactory, with investment company Brookfield potentially coming in as a financial backer alongside the European Union funding.

Schwarz, which owns retailer Lidl among other businesses, and Deutsche Telekom have been linked with moves to build the EU-backed infrastructure a number of times during 2025, alongside various other companies.

The operator’s CEO Timotheus Hoettges has also been a vocal backer of the need for Europe to control its own digital infrastructure and last month unveiled plans for a €1 billion data centre project in Munich in partnership with Nvidia.

In its statement announcing the deal with Nvidia, Deutsche Telekom noted the Munich project was independent of “the EU project for the promotion of the construction of several AI Gigafactories throughout Europe”.

Cash for the AI Gigafactories form part of a €200 billion investment plan unveiled by the European Commission in February 2025 to support technology development and independence across the region.

Deutsche Telekom’s ongoing domestic network upgrades delivered 145 fresh sites and updates to 417 locations during October, work it stated delivers benefits beyond just wireless connectivity.

The bulk of Deutsche Telekom’s work last month focused on the North Rhine-Westphalia, Bavaria and Lower Saxony regions. The operator explained its 5G network is approaching the reach of its 4G infrastructure, with 99 per cent of German households covered by the next-generation technology compared with 100 per cent coverage for LTE.

Deutsche Telekom noted the expansion and upgrade project is of particular benefit to customers on a hybrid tariff combining fixed and mobile access.

The set-up switches to mobile infrastructure when it offers faster data rates than Deutsche Telekom’s fixed network, delivering 500Mb/s download and 50Mb/s up without requiring fibre access.

Deutsche Telekom ultimately plans for all mobile sites to employ low-band frequencies to deliver broad range and coverage. Mid-band will be deployed in 90 per cent of sites to ensure adequate data rates and low latency.

It explained 85 per cent of its mobile sites are also being connected to a fibre backbone delivering data rates of 10Gb/s.

Deutsche Telekom reported solid progress towards defining 6G networks made by a research consortium comprising government, academia and industrial players which focused on how terrestrial and non-terrestrial networks can create unified infrastructure.

The 6G-TakeOff project is a German government-backed initiative exploring how holistic 3D networks could enable the next-generation technology. Deutsche Telekom coordinated the group, which concluded a three-year research programme at the close of August.

Deutsche Telekom stated “important insights” into the potential of 3D networks was gained, involving device handover, local deployment of mobile edge compute, and feederlink technology to connect ground stations with unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs).

O2 Telefonica, Airbus Defence and Space, NXP Semiconductors, Rohde & Schwarz, Boldyn Networks and John Deere are among the big names participating in the initiative along with a host of respected research institutes and universities.

Tested
Thomas Lips, SVP of RAN disaggregation and enablement, said the project “helped us better understand the practical challenges of integrating terrestrial and non-terrestrial components into a unified 3D communication framework”.

Deutsche Telekom explained 3D networks combine terrestrial with non-terrestrial options including HAPS and satellite.

The set-up is designed to optimise connections, using non-terrestrial options to complement ground base stations.

Consortium members developed demonstrations to assess the feasibility of various 3D network elements.

A testbed at the University of Bremen was used to assess device handover in a simulated 3D network.

Project members also demonstrated edge computing works in the 3D set-up, a proof the operator stated means compatible networks can be established on the fly and on a temporary basis.

The consortium also developed fresh antenna designs to connect ground stations and UAVs. The equipment provides a “particularly strong directional focus”, essentially becoming souped-up editions of the beamforming antennas used in feederlinks.

Deutsche Telekom stated the group also developed fresh approaches to steer beams, making the alignment of ground antennas and UAVs more accurate.

A total of seven patent applications have resulted from the consortium’s work to-date and Deutsche Telekom expects the information gathered to contribute to the standardisation of future generations of mobile technology.

Bosses of Deutsche Telekom and Orange pressed European Union (EU) policymakers to reform the bloc’s digital framework, mapping out key areas to strengthen the continent’s technology sovereignty.

In a joint statement, Deutsche Telekom CEO Timotheus Hoettges and Orange chief Christel Heydemann said digital sovereignty has become a “top EU strategic priority” which must be built on four principles: control over secure digital infrastructure; greater choice through interoperable European alternatives and technology ecosystems; competency via stronger digital skills; and achieving scale to fuel innovation and competitiveness.

The pair stressed these ambitions will require “massive investments, bold political decisions, and active engagement of all stakeholders”.

To achieve these goals, the bosses called for a more investment-friendly regulatory environment and urged the EU to adopt a “bold Digital Networks Act”, a proposed reform designed to modernise the region’s telecom rules and create a more integrated single market.

On AI, Hoettges and Heydemann said the EU must become “a true AI continent and not a mere consumer”. While telcos already use AI to create “more efficient, smart and agile networks”, they stressed that operators also have a duty to enable access to AI tools and computing resources for industry, academia and the public sector.

Additionally, the companies pushed for common EU sovereignty rules in cloud services, alongside a stronger commitment to favour European providers in public procurement. “This will enable the necessary scale for a more competitive and resilient European cloud ecosystem,” they noted.

“As leading European telecom operators, we are committed to strengthening Europe’s digital sovereignty and enhancing its global competitiveness,” the pair concluded, calling for “ambitious and effective reforms”.

Their comments come after Europe’s top operators warned the European Commission last month that slow progress on the Digital Networks Act risks leaving the region behind the US and Asia.

Deutsche Telekom branded Q3 another record quarter for its US operation and highlighted increased momentum in fibre-to-the-home uptake in Germany, as it upped annual earnings guidance.

In its results release the company flagged plans for what it labelled a record-high dividend payment for its current financial year, and increased guidance for adjusted EBITDA AL for the third time this year.

It expects the latter figure to be around €45.3 billion, nudged up from an estimate of “more than €45 billion” declared in its Q2 results.

In short statement, the operator’s CEO Timotheus Hoettges enthused “we reliably deliver strong figures in spite of all the challenges in our markets”.

Amid the positivity Deutsche Telekom’s reported figures continued to be blunted by weakness in the US dollar.

Its Q3 revenue increased 1.5 per cent year-on-year to €28.9 billion, though it noted stripping out exchange rates and other special factors this would have been up by 3.3 per cent.

Net profit was down 17.9 per cent to €2.4 billion, though in Q3 2024 its bottom line had been significantly bolstered by one-off items. Its adjusted figures recorded a 14.3 increase year-on-year.

Outside of the US and Germany, the group pointed to steady growth in its segment covering the rest of its European operations and increased earnings from enterprise focused unit T-Systems.

Deutsche Telekom deployed an AI agent powered by Google Cloud’s Gemini platform, designed to improve its mobile network through faster analysis and rapid troubleshooting.

Developed in partnership with Google Cloud and introduced at MWC25 Barcelona, the operator claims its RAN Guardian Agent marks a pioneering step toward autonomous, self-healing networks.

The operator stated the agent continuously monitors mobile network performance, identifies anomalies and autonomously takes corrective actions.

It consists of several specialised AI agents working in tandem. One agent scans public sources, like social media and event directories, to anticipate events which could impact network load.

Another agent assesses network readiness and real-time capacity, while a third executes optimisation measures such as reallocating resources or adjusting configuration.

The system can proactively recommend and implement network optimisations before issues impact customers, ensuring service even during major public events.

The agent runs Google Cloud’s Gemini 2.5 platform, and uses the hyperscaler’s CloudRun, BigQuery and Firestore offerings.

Abdu Mudesir, board member for product and technology at Deutsche Telekom, stated the company is the “first network operator to rely on a highly developed AI agent in network management”.

In May, Deutsche Telekom signed a long-term agreement with Google Cloud to integrate AI and cloud solutions into its networks and business applications.

Nvidia and Deutsche Telekom unveiled plans for a €1 billion data centre project in Germany to strengthen the country’s digital sovereignty and power Europe’s industrial AI ambitions.

The AI facility will mark one of Europe’s largest, deploying up to 10,000 Nvidia Blackwell GPUs to create what the partners call an “industrial AI cloud.” Set to begin operations in the first quarter of 2026, the Munich-based facility will boost Germany’s AI computing power by around 50 per cent, according to Deutsche Telekom.

SAP, Europe’s largest software company, will integrate its business technology platform and applications into the new cloud infrastructure, which will be housed in an existing Deutsche Telekom facility. The focus will be on linking AI models to industrial data sources to accelerate the adoption of automation and intelligent manufacturing.

Siemens, Perplexity, Agile Robots and Quantum Systems are among the initial ten partners building out the ecosystem.

Supercharge Germany
Nvidia chief Jensen Huang said the initiative will “supercharge” Germany’s industrial base. “With the world’s first Industrial AI Cloud and one of Germany’s largest GPU deployments, we’re bringing Nvidia AI and robotics to start a new era of Germany’s industrial transformation,” he said.

Federal digitalisation minister Karsten Wildberger hailed the deal as “crucial to making Germany a leading AI country”.

The Industrial AI Cloud marks one of the first flagship projects under the country’s Made 4 Germany initiative, which brings together more than 100 companies to boost the country’s appeal as a business hub while accelerating digitalisation.

The project also aligns with the European Union’s (EU) broader €200 billion InvestAI plan to triple the bloc’s AI capacity within the next decade.

While the €1 billion investment marks a major milestone for Europe, it remains modest compared to US projects from Microsoft, Google and OpenAI, which are spending hundreds of billions to scale AI infrastructure.

Last week, Nvidia struck a deal for the same amount with Nokia to build AI-native RAN systems for 5G-Advanced and 6G, with Huang stating the partnership would help the US “regain global leadership” in telecoms infrastructure.

LIVE FROM TIP FYUZ 2025, DUBLIN: Executives from Deutsche Telekom and AT&T battled it out over which company can claim to be making good on their open RAN deployment commitments, a conversation indicating a maturing of the industry as operators shift focus towards scaling initial rollouts.

Rob Soni, VP of RAN technology with AT&T (pictured, second from left), and Thomas Lips, SVP of RAN disaggregation and enablement at Deutsche Telekom (pictured, far left), broadly agreed the open RAN movement is progressing to the next level and changing the game for operators.

AT&T just made a big step forward by placing a live call over the network it is deploying in conjunction with Ericsson and 1Finity, and securing additional spectrum.

The work is “causing a shift and drift with us with respect to our competitors”, Soni said, explaining AT&T is now in a position to enable “spectrum by simply changing parameters because the radios are capable of absorbing that initial bandwidth”.

Stroll
AT&T is “no longer restricted in geography over where we place our vendors”. It can begin to consider nationwide deployments rather than just localised uses.

“What we’re seeing today is we’re out walking the talk. Everything we promised to do we’re more or less doing, but that is really through the combination of great work with our partners, with Ericsson, with Dell, with 1Finity and a variety of others.”

Lips said Deutsche Telekom is also making good on its open RAN commitments and noted the industry is already changing due to the movement.

Operators are “exchanging information about what is working or what is not working”, he said before telling Soni he thought “walk the talk was ours”.

Lips said Deutsche Telekom has the challenge of operating in multiple countries, but added an RFQ process covering 30,000 sites it intends to commence in January 2026 is likely to result in “change in the operating model” and the way it manages its networks.

Bernard Bureau, VP of wireless strategy and services at Telus (pictured, second from right) said the operator is already besting the KPIs of traditional RAN and is turning attention to how to employ RAN Intelligent Controllers (RICs) for tasks including “energy savings, load balancing” and other optimisation efforts.

Vodafone Group head of open RAN and Telecom Infra Project president Francisco Martin Pignatelli (pictured, far right) offered assurances the maturing of the open RAN movement does not spell the end of fresh approaches.

He explained Vodafone has not “selected all the suppliers for the radios yet” because it wants the flexibility to bring in new suppliers to cover fresh innovations, something more traditional RAN deals would not allow due to the time taken to deploy the infrastructure.

Deutsche Telekom’s IT services unit T-Systems put its faith in AI as the foundation of a turnkey business transformation product spanning consulting, cloud migration, application modernisation and managed services.

T-Systems @Vantage is positioned as easing company transitions to modern digital infrastructure and services, in turn helping them to reap the full benefits of such shifts.

It is packaged as an end-to-end set-up in which AI is used to speed the process of shifting legacy IT to cloud-based infrastructure by analysing application architecture and source code.

T-Systems explained the AI approach means systems previously considered unsuitable for upgrades can be tackled.

CEO Ferri Abolhassan said there is demand for T-Systems @Vantage because many companies which have commenced moves to the cloud have yet to see the results they expected.

Companies are hitting problems around complexity or failing to achieve the levels of efficiency they would like, Abolhassan explained.

“Cloud computing is only successful when applications are modernised, not simply lifted and shifted to the cloud.”

T-Systems @Vantage is manufacturer-independent and can be connected to Deutsche Telekom’s European cloud platforms to address sovereignty requirements.

Deutsche Telekom took a pioneering eSIM step by transferring a profile between the two biggest smartphone OSes, breaking barriers to device upgrades using a GSMA standard and its own entitlement server.

The operator stated it is the first in Europe to transfer an eSIM profile between Android and iOS devices. The moves were previously restricted to phones on the same platform.

Deutsche Telekom explained its initial intra-platform capability spans iPhones running iOS 26 and Google Pixel 10 devices, with more Android models in the pipeline.

Using the GSMA TS.43 entitlement configuration specification and its own server, Deutsche Telekom enabled eSIM transfers to be initiated in the settings of the user’s new smartphone while its system performs background checks regarding the eligibility of the device, tariff and user.

If it all checks out, Deutsche Telekom’s system approves the transfer of the user’s existing profile while maintaining their phone number and tariff.

Deutsche Telekom explained developments carried out on its entitlement server since 2017 brought the functionality to its European subsidiaries and it plans to make it available in other nations in future.

Deutsche Telekom hit 99 per cent population coverage with its domestic 5G network ahead of schedule, advancing moves to offer an ultra-high-capacity network which will ultimately employ a mix of low- and mid-band frequencies.

Upgrades and fresh deployments conducted in August took Deutsche Telekom to the coverage target earlier than its original year-end deadline. It commissioned 132 new sites and upped the capacity at 533 others, with 5G activated for the first time at 128 of those.

Fresh site deployments covered key regions including North Rhine-Westphalia, Bavaria and Baden-Wurttemberg.

Deutsche Telekom’s upgrades also benefitted its 4G coverage, which it noted stood at close to 100 per cent by end-August.

The operator explained its work advance a goal to deliver an ultra-high-capacity network which offers download data rates of 1GB/s per cell across 90 per cent of locations. The low-band 700MHz, 800MHz and 900MHz frequencies being employed “offer long range and good network coverage, even in buildings”, it stated.

These will be paired with mid-band 1500MHz, 1800MHz and 2100MHz frequencies offering high transmission rates and swift response times, with a 3.6GHz option to be used at traffic hubs.

Deutsche Telekom intends to employ a fibre backbone, with 85 per cent of locations set for connectivity with data rates in excess of 10GB/s.

Iridium Communications and Deutsche Telekom forged a partnership to integrate the satellite player’s NTN Direct service with the mobile operator’s terrestrial IoT network.

Deutsche Telekom will gain roaming access to Iridium’s forthcoming 3GPP standards-based 5G service, providing NB-IoT direct-to-device (D2D) connectivity for its customers to keep their devices connected beyond traditional network coverage.

Unlike competitors such as AST SpaceMobile and Lynk Global, Iridium is banking on a 3GPP-based approach for D2D communications because it makes use of its existing assets and industry standard chipsets.

Jens Olejak, head of satellite IoT at Deutsche Telekom, stated the 3GPP approach enables convergence on more affordable devices across both terrestrial and non-terrestrial networks.

A representative from Iridium told Mobile World Live it has 66 satellites in orbit for its global coverage. Like some of its rivals, it uses a constellation of low earth orbit (LEO) birds.

Iridium stated Deutsche Telekom is among the first mobile network operators to begin integrating its L-band service with terrestrial infrastructure.

Planned for commercial launch in 2026, the NTN Direct service will support roaming use cases like messaging, tracking, and monitoring for IoT, and industrial device applications such as international cargo logistics, remote utility monitoring, smart agriculture, and emergency response.

Financial terms and the length of the partnership were not available.

Iridium was founded in 1987 and joined 3GPP in 2023.

Tim Farrar, an analyst at TMF Associates, stated in a research note T-Mobile US was interested in buying EchoStar spectrum for use as part of its partnership with Starlink.

He explained co-founder and chair Charlie Ergen indicated during an EchoStar presentation yesterday (15 September) at World Satellite Business Week in Paris the deal with SpaceX only came together in the last few weeks, seemingly confirming Semafor reporting the original plan had been to sell spectrum to T-Mobile before Deutsche Telekom vetoed the purchase.

Deutsche Telekom unveiled plans to launch a new independent cloud offering as part of a push around European sovereignty and respond to concerns about a reliance on technology outside the continent.

The Germany-based operator stated its T Cloud service will officially roll-out at the Digital X event held in Cologne tomorrow (10 September), pledging to provide different services to customers “at different levels of sovereignty”.

In its statement, the company pointed to the findings from the Draghi report from 2024, which found the EU is dependent on technologies from abroad for digital products, services and infrastructure.

“This poses financial operational and strategical risks for companies and governments: unpredictable cost explosions, interruptions to critical processes or supply chains and threats to intellectual property and sensitive data,” Deutsche Telekom stated.

Through T Cloud, the provider noted instead of closed systems, it would pursue a multi-cloud approach and integrate a wide variety of platforms into a “seamless partner ecosystem”.

These include a public and private cloud offering and a cloud service which offers customers support based on workflows and differing types of data. It will also incorporate an AI cloud play in partnership with Nvidia for data centres, operations, sales and security.

Ferri Abolhassan, CEO of T-Systems said T Cloud “is the answer to Europe’s call for greater digital self-determination”.

Head of T Cloud Lars Neumann added the offering “combines digital sovereignty with investment security and sustainable benefits – locally anchored, globally connectable, tailored to the needs of the customer”.

Deutsche Telekom’s SVP of RAN disaggregation and enablement Thomas Lips took over as chair of industry group the O-RAN Alliance from his colleague at the German operator group Abdurazak Mudesir.

The organisation announced the appointment today (4 September) but noted it was effective from 28 August.

A middle-aged man with short gray hair, wearing a navy blue suit jacket and a white collared shirt, smiles softly at the camera. The background is softly blurred, suggesting an indoor setting with natural light.

As part of his role at the operator, Lips (pictured, left) oversees Deutsche Telekom’s patent management and participation with standards bodies including 3GPP.

In a statement, Lips noted the O-RAN Alliance would “remain committed to its mission to transform the RAN to be open, intelligent, virtualised and fully interoperable” during his tenure.

“We will focus on priority areas to support large-scale open RAN deployments by operators worldwide,” he added.

“A key goal is to provide a framework for AI-enabled open RAN, creating new opportunities for intelligent and autonomous networks.”

Lips’ predecessor Mudesir is currently group CTO at Deutsche Telekom and is set to take-up a role leading technology and innovation on the operator’s board later this year.

He spent just over a year at the helm of the O-RAN Alliance’s board, having taken over from Alex Jinsung Choi, who also worked at the German operator during his tenure as chair.

Deutsche Telekom advanced a network slicing push beyond recent consumer-oriented plays, employing the approach along with technology from Motorola Solutions to offer priority communications to emergency services in Germany.

The operator began offering priority voice and data communications on its 4G and 5G networks today (1 September). It stated it deployed a mission-critical broadband set-up based on Motorola Solutions technology and its own network slicing capabilities, which it recently promoted for consumer gaming services.

Deutsche Telekom Public Sector director Gottfried Ludewig said it is building on solid credentials as a provider of emergency communications by putting a “blue light on data” by pushing non-critical information aside.

A handheld Motorola walkie-talkie with a color screen displaying a menu appears to the right. On the left, large pink 3D text reads "5G" against a blue, blurred background, suggesting advanced wireless communication technology.

“At the same time, we reserve capacity in the mobile network for emergency responders using network slicing.”

The operator explained it is employing standards-based mission-critical communications set-ups to enable the exchange of push-to-talk voice and video, and data between different emergency services in real-time.

It means the emergency services can work “seamlessly together across 5G/LTE devices and smartphones as well as radios”, Deutsche Telekom explained.

The operator previously tested network slicing for the purpose with federal police and it was one of its showcases during MWC24 Barcelona.

It said around 150,000 German police officers employ its current TETRA-based services.

T-Systems appointed its first chief sovereignty officer, responding to rising demand for digital dominion tools capable of being adapted to diverse customer and regulatory requirements.

Christine Knackfuss-Nikolic (pictured, right) shifted from her role as T-Systems’ CTO to the sovereignty position today (1 September). The job involves developing different plans to address unique challenges customers are facing, with a remit covering the company’s entire security business.

Concurrently, T-Systems detailed the addition of Andreas Schlegel (pictured, left) to its management team as chief strategy and transformation officer. He will pick up the portfolio strategy, market intelligence and relations, and partner management baton from Knackfuss-Nikolic.

Schlegel is also tasked with developing and implementing a “comprehensive corporate strategy” involving leadership innovation, competitive differentiation and lean portfolio management.

He was formerly deputy head of Deutsche Telekom’s Group Strategy and Transformation department.

T-Systems CEO Ferri Abolhassan said Knackfuss-Nikolic’s position was created due to growing calls for digital sovereignty sparked by “geopolitical uncertainties and more” among German and European businesses.

“They want to free themselves from dependence on hyperscalers and retain control over their own data”.

T-Systems hopes the appointment and a fresh cloud offering will make it a front runner in the sovereign cloud and AI sector, Abolhassan explained.

Deutsche Telekom continued to blaze a trail for its so-called AI phone, deepening ties with US software company Perplexity AI by making its Comet browser available to some users of the device.

The operator highlighted pent-up demand for Comet, stating 1.5 million people globally are on a waiting list to access the browser. Deutsche Telekom explained people in the US gained access in July and it is now opening the door for users of the Perplexity Pro service in Germany.

A hand holds a smartphone with a bright magenta screen displaying the time 08:47 and date "Do., 14. Aug." The phone interface has simple icons, and the background is brightly lit with pink and magenta tones.

Deutsche Telekom began providing free access to Perplexity Pro for one year in 2024 through its MagentaMoments loyalty scheme and is making the chatbot a stalwart of its T Phone 3 by bundling an 18-month licence.

Perplexity VP of business Ryan Foutty said Deutsche Telekom was its first choice when looking to broaden the list of countries where Comet is available.

Comet “acts as a personal AI assistant in your browser”, Deutsche Telekom explained, handling functions including scheduling, trip planning and general queries.

Board member and MD of Telekom Deutschland Rodrigo Diehl (pictured) said the browser is another step in the operator’s mission to “democratise AI and make it available to everyone”.

Deutsche Telekom took a 5G gaming play to the next level, revealing a plan to launch a low-latency cloud service employing network slicing in collaboration with Nvidia.

The companies intend to use low-latency, low-loss, scalable throughput (L4S) technology on Deutsche Telekom’s 5G network to deliver stable gaming on smartphones.

It explained Nvidia’s GeForce NOW cloud platform is a core element, one which positions the operator as a frontrunner in Europe’s mobile gaming market.

Deutsche Telekom detailed the partnership on the eve of Gamescom 2025, a massive gaming event scheduled to run in the city of Cologne from 20 August to 24 August.

Wolfgang Metze, head of Consumer Business at Deutsche Telekom, said its existing 5G+ Gaming service provides “seamless gameplay” without downloads or lag.

Bringing Nvidia into the mix means users get access to “a top-tier selection of over 2,300” titles.

The Nvidia set-up is only available to MagentaMobil subscribers with Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra or Galaxy S25 devices. Deutsche Telekom stated more models are set to be added.

Deutsche Telekom highlighted German Games Industry Association figures showing mobile devices have been the most popular gaming platform in the nation for several years, with around 24.6 million players on smartphones and tablets in 2024.

The operator’s gaming pitch is a key consumer use case for its standalone 5G network.

Deutsche Telekom is reportedly teaming up with Porsche SE to head up a new venture capital fund targeting European defence companies, in an attempt to cash in on an increase in military spending in the continent.

Citing unnamed sources, Bloomberg reported the new fund will be run by German investment company DTCP which was owned by Deutsche Telekom a decade ago, before being spun off.

Porsche SE, the holding company that controls carmakers Porsche and Volkswagen, already has a partnership with DTCP and together set up another VC fund focused on connected mobility, in which Deutsche Telekom is an investor.

The size and make-up of the new fund remains unconfirmed according to sources, but there is a desire from both companies to tap into an increase in defence investment in Europe.

Bloomberg reported this has been sparked by Russia’s war with Ukraine and questions about the US’ commitment to NATO.

The outlet reported investment companies Lakestar and CVC Capital Partners, among others, are raising money and establishing plays to pursue defence deals in Europe.

Deutsche Telekom’s push comes after fellow European telecoms operator Orange made a big play around defence in June, with its Business unit launching a specialised division around the sector.

Deutsche Telekom made a big push around increasing AI accessibility and adoption, launching two new low-cost devices centred around the technology in partnership with Perplexity.

Through Perplexity Assistant, the T Phone 3 and T Tablet 2 devices support functions including real-time translation, trip planning, tutoring, email drafting, content summarisation and image editing. Users can activate the AI tool through a magenta button on the hardware or by double-tapping the power key, using either voice or text input.

In addition, the new models sport hardware upgrades such as faster charging, AI-enhanced camera tools and improved sustainability credentials. For all consumers who do not purchase a new smartphone, the operator’s Magenta AI service, integrated into the MeinMagenta app, offers free access to selected AI tools such as Perplexity’s answer engine and an image editor powered by Picsart.

The app-based offering aims to expand AI accessibility and provide customers with “compact access to various AI services and allow them to explore this technology first-hand,” said Claudia Nemat, board member for technology and innovation at Deutsche Telekom.

In Germany, the AI-phone is available from €149 while the AI-tablet starts at €199, with bundle offers reducing both devices to €1 each when purchased alongside a tariff. An 18-month subscription to Perplexity Pro and a three-month Picsart Pro licence are included in the purchase. Prices vary across the other nine launch markets, including Austria, Croatia, Czechia, Greece and Hungary.

A Pro version of the AI-phone is scheduled to launch later this year.

Deutsche Telekom first teased an AI-driven, app-free smartphone at MWC Barcelona 2024, in partnership with Qualcomm and Brain.ai.

In its latest announcement, the operator cited data from the IDC forecasting that generative AI smartphones are on track to account for 70 per cent of global shipments by 2028, driven by demand for features such as translation and advanced camera functions.

A weakening of the US dollar against the euro blunted Deutsche Telekom’s top line growth in Q2, though the company was positive on what CEO Timotheus Hoettges (pictured) said was sustained strong growth on both sides of the Atlantic.

Revenue was up 1 per cent year-on-year to €28.7 billion, though it noted stripping out exchange rate changes it would have recorded a 4 per cent rise.

Net profit was €2.6 billion, up 25.2 per cent. However, the operator explained when removing special items impacting its figures in both years, the increase would have been 1.1 per cent.

In a brief comment, Hoettges said it “continues to set the pace in the industry” with “sustained strong growth” in the US and Europe.

The operator faced a decline in business sales where mobile terminals are included in home market of Germany. It also noted a corporate customer in the nation switched to a competitor, which impacted its contract connection additions.

For the domestic consumer mobile segment, it pointed to a positive reception for unlimited plans introduced in April.

Deutsche Telekom’s US operation T-Mobile US reported its results last month, highlighting customer number and financial gains.

Ericsson announced 12 global operators have completed a transaction to take a 50 per cent stake in API-focused subsidiary Aduna, officially establishing the business as a joint venture.

Ericsson stated it holds 50 per cent of the equity, while operators AT&T, Bharti Airtel, Deutsche Telekom, KDDI, Orange, Reliance Jio, Singtel, Telefonica, Telstra, T-Mobile, Verizon and Vodafone have as expected taken the remaining stake combined.

Aduna became operational in September 2024, with a goal to create an ecosystem of companies also including hyperscalers, developers and other industry players committed to advancing APIs and establish a set of common interfaces based on the existing industry-wide CAMARA open source project.

It has also stated its work will be in-keeping with the GSMA’s Open Gateway initiative.

In addition to funding and commercial agreements, Ericsson stated the 12 operator shareholders will provide support through telecom operator relationships, knowledge of the developer community and expertise in network APIs.

Since its formation, Aduna has expanded its ecosystem, with operators including SoftBank Corp and NTT Docomo and five vendors including Microsoft and Syniverse the latest to join the effort.

Anthony Bartolo, who was named CEO of Aduna in January this year, stated closing the transaction was another important step for Aduna.

“In just ten months we have built an impressive ecosystem comprising the biggest names in telecoms and the wider ICT industry,” he said. “The closing provides renewed motivation for Aduna to accelerate the adoption of network APIs by developers on a global scale.”

Deutsche Telekom-commissioned research found young adults feel ill-equipped to tackle digital privacy threats, presenting an opportunity for operators to provide protection and education.

The operator believes many people aged between 16-years and 26-years old face a threat of their data being secretly cloned and sold, enabling the creation of doppelgangers.

Deutsche Telekom explained research conducted for it by Savanta found 90 per cent of young adults are worried about their digital privacy but less than 7 per cent feel confident in managing their data.

Savanta quizzed 1,795 people in Austria, Croatia, Czechia, Germany, Poland, Slovakia and the UK, with results published late last month.

Deutsche Telekom noted 70 per cent said they would like more information on methods of protecting themselves online, something chief brand officer Ulrich Klenke argued should be a “fundamental right”.

Klenke said a platform Deutsche Telekom is launching would help educate young adults on how to “turn privacy mode on in their digital lives”.

The campaign includes a music video created in collaboration with Polish DJ VTSS, who said many young adults “feel this low-key anxiety about how much of us lives online and how little control we have over it”.

Deutsche Telekom also launched an online platform offering a series of classes covering topics including data tracking and the influence of algorithms.

Deutsche Telekom dangled fast mobile gaming as a carrot to lure consumers to its standalone 5G network in Germany, making the package available nationwide and upping the number of compatible handsets.

Asserting an inaugural move for the German market in terms of using network slicing in consumer offering, Deutsche Telekom stated its 5G+ Gaming service is benefitting from a growing range of titles from cloud platform Sora Stream which, in turn, was upping the availability with a range of discounts and special offers.

Deutsche Telekom promises 5G+ Gaming offers an experience on par with static gaming in the home by using network slicing to minimise response times.

Low-latency, low loss, scalable throughput (L4S) is another feature benefitting Deutsche Telekom’s 5G gaming credentials, it stated.

The operator noted the Sora Stream service is available for a wide range of devices. It stated optimal experiences have been configured for Apple iPhone 15 and iPhone 16 models, and Samsung’s Galaxy S24 and Galaxy S25 ranges.

Deutsche Telekom and Nvidia fleshed out plans for the creation of an industrial AI cloud facility in Germany aimed at manufacturers, as the operator’s CEO Timotheus Hoettges urged rapid action to seize AI opportunities.

In a statement discussing the plan for the facility and its involvement in the project, which was referenced by Nvidia by CEO Jensen Huang earlier this week, Deutsche Telekom stated implementation of the infrastructure was expected “by 2026 at the latest”.

The operator explained the cloud would provide the “opportunity to advance Germany as an industrial hub rapidly implementing AI”.

Deutsche Telekom will be responsible for data centres, operations, sales, security and AI systems while Nvidia will supply 10,000 GPUs alongside networking and AI software.

“Europe’s technological future needs a sprint, not a stroll,” Hoettges said, adding “we must seize the opportunities of artificial intelligence now, revolutionise our industry and secure a leading position in the global technology competition. Our economic success depends on quick decisions and collaborative innovations”.

Huang noted “in the era of AI, every manufacturer needs two factories: one for making things and one for creating the intelligence that powers them.”

“By building Europe’s first industrial AI infrastructure, we’re enabling the region’s leading industrial companies to advance simulation-first, AI-driven manufacturing.”

Manufacturing services expected to be covered include design, engineering, simulation, digital twins and robotics, Nvidia explained in its statement on the move.

European tour
Huang and Nvidia have been on something of a charm offensive in Europe this week.

In addition to a lengthy address at Nvidia’s GTC Paris, Huang appeared alongside French President Emmanuel Macron at co-located event VivaTech, having shared a stage with UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer at London Tech Week days before.

Earlier today (13 June), the executive met German Chancellor Friedrich Merz to discuss the industrial cloud project.

Accompanying these activities on the continent, Nvidia issued a spate of press announcements detailing various projects and partnerships with businesses in the region.

An alliance of leading mobile operators including Deutsche Telekom, Vodafone, Orange, MTN and Telefonica called on standards body 3GPP to put the necessary frameworks in place to ensure 6G technology is an operational and societal success, while avoiding mistakes from the 5G era.

The Next Generation Mobile Networks Alliance (NGMN), on behalf of the operators, stated it had presented a unified 6G vision to 3GPP, advocating for the critical need for harmonised global standards as it prepares for setting the scope for Release 20.

In its 6G Key Messages – An Operator View publication, NGMN argued that standards should be built upon the features and capabilities introduced with 5G and “create value through new services”, delivering benefits to users and operators.

To that end, 6G must demonstrate clear, tangible benefits with a realistic techno-economic framework network architecture to meet MNOs criteria for “modularity, simplicity, openness, operational simplification, compatibility and interoperability, while delivering economic and social sustainability”, said NGMN.

Embrace decoupled roadmaps
The latest rallying cry consolidates messages from a previous NGMN publication published in 2023, with industry heavyweights stressing the transition to 6G should be evolutionary but not force a complete hardware refresh.

It further acknowledged fresh radio equipment will be required to deploy new frequency bands, but the evolution towards 6G in existing bands should primarily occur through software upgrades.

Laurent Leboucher, chairman of the NGMN Alliance board and Orange Group CTO and EVP Networks, insisted the move to 6G should be seamless, fully compatible with 5G and “propelled by continuous software innovation”.

“The industry must move beyond synchronised hardware/software ‘G’ cycle and embrace decoupled roadmaps,” he added.
